"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

Well observed, OP. Can't help wondering what collective insecurity drives this need, in what way is their Yorkshire-ness threatened?

autienotnaughty · 24/03/2022 05:25

London yes Scotland yes Yorkshire no.
Tha dunt know wha thas talkin bout lass!

PaulaTrilloe · 24/03/2022 05:34

How much?

Zonder · 24/03/2022 05:35

Definitely not experienced this. And I'm from Yorkshire!

Buddywoo · 24/03/2022 05:45

I lived there for 20 years and the various announcements made about this being best and that being best just because it's Yorkshire. Also the rudeness, which they call 'telling it like it is'.
Whenever we hear anything like that nowadays we laugh and call it Yorkshire proud.

EIisheva · 24/03/2022 05:46

@MrsTerryPratchett

It's like being vegan, the few who announce it constantly ruin it for the rest Grin
This was EXACTLY what I was about to say’

I’m a vegan so I should know preens

TunaPlastic · 24/03/2022 05:47

I was part of a random mix of people sent to Yorkshire for a project, we were all genuinely impressed with it's beauty. But the project joke quickly became ' but why did no one mention this before' after copious random acts were attributed to the location - good night's sleep, decent beer, shot blasting and powder coating.

Elsewhere we also clocked that many people had studied different courses at a university level which were relevent or randomly not 'i'm in charge of this nuclear reactor, but I started off in Spanish and stage design' unless they went 'TO CAMBRIDGE ' which was announced early and as a full explanation.

I don't know about vegans, it was20 years ago and the frozen veggie lasagna was supposed to cover ally the non standard diets.

The Mancs are also a bit like this to be fair. My manc relatives definitely think they’re more real because .... they’re Mancs

Whereas I’m a Scoiser so more prone to self deprecation.

DaisyWaldron · 24/03/2022 05:51

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
They'd make you try Henderson's Relish, which covers both.
TheBolterdahling · 24/03/2022 05:53

@Pixiedust1234
I don’t think you’re from Yorkshire (any of its four counties)

"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?
Externaldoorsareexciting · 24/03/2022 05:53

I identify more with my county than I do my country I think, just how it’s always been.

TheBolterdahling · 24/03/2022 05:53

Poor Brontes 😂

JeremyVinesEgo · 24/03/2022 05:56

I'm from Yorkshire and never use it as an excuse for anything. If I'm asked where I'm from, I'll say the name of my town. I have never known any of my fellow Yorkshire people say "it's because I'm from Yorkshire"??

Longdistance · 24/03/2022 05:56

My dds teacher is from Yorkshire. Yes, he announces it a lot.
Yorkshire’s so good, they even have their own tea!

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 24/03/2022 05:58

GrinYes they do.
But only of you're down south...

Its a cultural identity... rightly or wrongly..

I work with people from all over the UK so it's not just Yorkshire. In fact Welsh people do this and anyone from 'The North'. I'm vaguely Northern myself so have to check I'm not doing this! I live in the South East and my slight accent is noticeable but not placeable. I do get asked. Wish I could clearly pronounce I'm from x instead of the vaguely northern place I am from. (Not actually north north) coz no one has heard of it!

My mum is from Manchester. She left when she was 6 and she is nearly 80
..and her mother was of course too although she lived away during some of her childhood. She only lived there for about 20 years of her long life! Both still mentioned to everyone they're from Manchester originally. A few years ago my mum told me she was a lifelong supporters of Man City Confused. I actually laughed out loud.

Yorkshire has some strong stereotypes...

I see this as part of a wider obsession with identity.

RampantIvy · 24/03/2022 05:59

I live in Yorkshire Grin
It is my adopted county. I tend to mention it on weather threads when people are complaining about stifling heat (usually in London) just to remind them that not everyone lives in London, and it is 15 degrees and raining where I live.

And food threads, and nice places to live threads, and public transport threads.

JeremyVinesEgo · 24/03/2022 06:02

@WeasilyPleased

My sister's exmil is the epitome of this. No beach anywhere in the world compared to Bridlington and her first words to our mum were "You can't make Yorkshire pudding like we can in Yorkshire" My mum replied " It's never been very high on my list of priorities actually " She wasn't even from proper Yorkshire either. She was from Sheffield 😂
Why isn't Sheffield proper Yorkshire?
yorkie99 · 24/03/2022 06:03

What’s wrong with being proud of your cultural identity?!

FairyPrincess123 · 24/03/2022 06:04

As the joke goes "How do you ask if someone's from Yorkshire?", "You don't have to, they'll tell you"

Ozgirl75 · 24/03/2022 06:04

I actually think the Welsh are much more guilty of this than anyone else I’ve met from the U.K.!
I just think of it as being really proud of their Welshness and to be fair all of them (except one who we predictably nicknamed the Dragon) were lovely.

MeridianB · 24/03/2022 06:04

I can’t say I’ve heard this a lot IRL, but there’s something in the stereotype. One of the characters in TwentyTwelve began every sentence with ‘I’m from Yorkshire, and…’

And then there’s this beauty…

@11Pixiedust1234 they are separate counties.

I think Yorkshire people do, do this. But i think it tends to be the older ones ime. Though people do it to me more often

'Do you have a whippet, being from yorkshire?'
'Bet you love a cup of tea, being from Yorkshire?'

And even 'oh I bet you don't feel the cold, cause yorkshire'.

I also work with a lot of Scottish people, they do it too. Keep reminding us they are from Scotland. But in both cases it's always done light heartedly. Never heard anyone using as an excuse to be rude though.

HighlandCowbag · 24/03/2022 06:05

This thread is funny. I am from Yorkshire as is dh. Whenever we go on holiday we notice a little unofficial club of Yorkshire folk seem to congregate around the pool together,in the bar, sit near each other for any entertainment.

And always by about the 3rd day a large group ( its always a large group) of liverpudlians join in and become honary Yorkshire Grin.

I love where I live. I can be in the countryside,proper countryside not a park in 10 minutes or a big city in 20.

Sushi7 · 24/03/2022 06:08

A lot of Welsh and Scottish do this too! Regarding the people from Yorkshire, it’s as though they think they are the only county to have all these hardships.
