"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

@KneadingKitty

It's just a little joke we have in Yorkshire. Amused that you're annoyed enough to make a thread about it Grin
Ive come to the conclusion that annoying / being rude people is what its about. Really not a pleasant trait.

In the 70s a common quip was, 'You never need to ask if someone's from Yorkshire, they'll tell you that before they tell their name.'

I’m from Yorkshire..and now live in the south west ..and never announce I’m from Yorkshire. I’ve never seen any Yorkshire flags ..however do see lots of County flags around where we live now

oakleaffy · 25/03/2022 18:26

Nobody from Yorkshire has EVER volunteered that info to me-
Why would they?
I don’t go around telling people where I’m from, it simply isn’t relevant.

Pelsall116 · 25/03/2022 18:30

I am from Yorkshire but don't go around announcing it; it is a phrase I use if someone asks me if I am from Lancashire or comments that they think I have a Lancashire accent...........
If they ask where I am from I tell them my home town

Hertsgirl10 · 25/03/2022 18:31

Iv never met someone from Yorkshire so wouldn’t know but people from up North always moan about the price of things I noticed 😂

Toyrus · 25/03/2022 18:32

I'm foreign living in London, but I have noticed that on TV in particular as I haven't met many Yorkshire people in real life:

'I'm a Yorkshire man, so I do so and so...'
'I'm a Yorkshire lass, you know what I mean, so I do like so and so...'

It drives my London born H mad.

SilverOtter · 25/03/2022 18:34

I'd never heard of it experienced this until I read it on Mumsnet.

I'm my experience people ask me where I'm from and then I tell them!

Mehmehmeh19 · 25/03/2022 18:35

I'm from Yorkshire, have a very loud and proud accent. The only time I've announced it is to get in first. Before someone if a work down 'pit

Dh is from Yorkshire and identity’s more as a Yorkshireman than as an Englishman.
He adores Yorkshire and I have to admit it is very beautiful.
We visited a quaint Yorkshire town and dh bought lots of items with Yorkshire sayings on!

I have the unenviable position of being a Lancashire lass living in Yorkshire.

My Yorkshire husband is lovely but my MIL once held forth with a 45 minute monologue on why Yorkshire is the best place to live in THE WORLD and she simply couldn't IMAGINE why anyone would want to live anywhere else 😐

Another time, as I'm into researching my family tree, I happily told her that the family name originated in Lancashire. She stared at me blankly for 10 seconds then kept talking talking and pretended I hadn't said anything Grin

jamdonut · 25/03/2022 18:42

I’m from Hertfordshire, but since 2003 I’m from Yorkshire!!
Don’t you know we want Home Rule up here?😏

Alleycat1 · 25/03/2022 18:43

It makes me laugh when they bang on about it being "God's own country" because, quite obviously, it is in fact, Dorset. 😂

Phyllis321 · 25/03/2022 18:44

My dad's from Yorkshire and I've never heard him mention it unless directly relevant to the conversation. However I have met 'professional Yorkies' too.

floppybit · 25/03/2022 18:45

Yes, I have noticed this. Gods Own Country, and all that bollocks.

Oooh no!!! Very different places as are West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire, the City of Hull, Different accents for a start!!!
floppybit · 25/03/2022 18:47

And why are channel 5 obsessed with programs about Yorkshire?? A Yorkshire Life, A Yorkshire Vet, The Seasons in Yorkshire, My Favourite Yorkshire Cheeses, Doing Fuck all in Yorkshire

Dnaltocs · 25/03/2022 18:48

Best to say they’re from Yorkshire in case of doubt and someone thinks they’re from the South of England. It’s wonderful some folk are actually proud of being from somewhere. So many talk down our country including journalists and the dreaded radio phone ins.
I say get strong, announce the ‘I’m proud to be from ……Ayrshire, the Highlands, Antrim, the Borders. Just be proud of where you are from.

Let them be proud.

Jewel52 · 25/03/2022 18:49

Do with you on never declaring the Irish thing as I inevitably get asked a load of bollocks questions like whether I know some random Irish person (not all Irish people know each other!), do I Gaelic dance etc etc. A uni friend also mentioned how much she loved Irish people as all her cleaners growing up had been Irish and we were “the salt of the earth”. She genuinely thought this was a compliment Hmm

Kjpt140v · 25/03/2022 18:50

Nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from. I do not like it when they use, being from Yorkshire as an excuse for being rude and abrupt. Proud Salopian.

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/03/2022 18:50

Do you live down south? I think northerners are more likely to stand out and feel a bit different - a bit of self deprecating’banter’.
