"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

Lincslady53 · 25/03/2022 18:51

Harry Enfield didn't help with this character.

jamdonut · 25/03/2022 18:53

@Vanilli1978

I’m from Yorkshire..and now live in the south west ..and never announce I’m from Yorkshire. I’ve never seen any Yorkshire flags ..however do see lots of County flags around where we live now
Yorkshire flags everywhere!! Especially on Yorkshire Day (1st August).
Helloevans3 · 25/03/2022 18:56

I wish I could say that but I don’t even have ancestors from Yorkshire. They say it because they have a pride in their county. And it is glorious.

EdenFlower · 25/03/2022 18:57

It might have already been said, but...'If it's not from Yorkshire, it's shite!'

CountryMouse22 · 25/03/2022 18:58

Here's a nice carrier bag from Amazon.

cookie4640 · 25/03/2022 19:06

Well let’s face it, it’s it’s not from Yorkshire then it’s sh*te 😂

I’m from Yorkshire 😂

doskant · 25/03/2022 19:07

We have a professional Yorkie in our office. She mentions it several times a day, decks her desk out in Yorkshire trinkets etc and only drinks Yorkshire tea, the boxes of which she keeps in prominent position on her desk. Not that you’d miss it because she’ll exclaim loudly about it being time for a Yorkshire brew multiple times a day. It’s safe to say she’s from Yorkshire. Oddly, she talks about the small town she’s from (somewhere in Yorkshire) with a similar level of excitement. Despite none of us remotely knowing what she’s on about because we live on the other side of the planet. I might try to wind her up and ask why she drinks Yorkshire tea if she’s Belgian.

NellieJean · 25/03/2022 19:10

You can always tell a Yorkshireman, you just can’t tell him much.

CambsAlways · 25/03/2022 19:14

I’ve also noticed this a couple of friends introduce themselves as we are Yorkshire lasses always makes me smile

herbaceous · 25/03/2022 19:15

@MoonOnASpoon

*Its piss taking and passive aggressiveness though. No one cares that they are from Yorkshire though and the sympathy is really snide.*

This kind of illustrates the whole point. To me it's funny and warm, there's a kind of self piss-take going on. It's far from aggressive or snide ... but I get that if you don't get it, you don't see that and you think it's genuinely about being smug and superior.

But because the Yorkshire person's experience is that other people don't get it, that just adds to the Yorkshire camaraderie.

You see that's the problem. An 'in joke' that the other person doesn't get is just mean and piss-taking. And smug.

And there's a reverse snobbery about the 'pride in where you come from' thing. It's fine to be proud of being from Yorkshire, but if a Londoner dared to say 'I'm from London so therefore I'm the best', they would be accused of being up themselves and a twat.

Maybe it's just that there are twats from everywhere, and the ones who preface every observation with 'Well I'm from Yorkshire/Cornwall/Glasgow/Essex so I'm going to be an opinionated arsehole' are just, indeed, arseholes.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 25/03/2022 19:22

From yorkshire, I can confirm you are absolutely right 😂 we only do it out of area/talking to non yorkshire folk though.

thenightsky · 25/03/2022 19:23

I blame Jane McDonald.

Starwind74 · 25/03/2022 19:25

Yes , my Mum did even though her family moved from Yorkshire to London when my Nan was pregnant with my Mum.! so she never even lived there ! She did however spend summer holidays as a child up there with her grandparents.

Nikileigh · 25/03/2022 19:33

Why wouldn’t we tell everyone. As a proud Yorkshire women. I never venture far out of Yorkshire if I can help it. Well apart from the yearly trip to Skeggy to find out Yorkshire people on their yearly jaunt 😉

Bleachmycloths · 25/03/2022 19:35

Yep. They’re a Bunche of tight arses! Lol🤣
Joking.
But I’ve noticed that a lot of people from Yorkshire are proud of it. Good luck to them x

Icantfindmykeys · 25/03/2022 19:44

Let them! I’m from London but not keen on bringing it up! However I love Yorkshire and their fab people. Yes, they may tell you but they are taking to you as a complete stranger and I love that!
Londoners used to be more freindly - don’t change you lovely people from Yorkshire ❤️

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/03/2022 19:46
Harry Enfield didn't help with this character.
I don't know what you mean, I thought that was a 'fly-on-the-wall' documentary. Confused
BrightOrangeOrange · 25/03/2022 19:51

"I'm from Essex" is more annoying.

I'm not from Yorkshire but I love Yorkshire & Sean Bean.

Properjob · 25/03/2022 20:10

I like that they do that. I can then move on. Grin

GoodEggy · 25/03/2022 20:14

Yes! My DH and I have commented on this before. People from Yorkshire bloody love being from Yorkshire.

Both my in laws are Yorkshire born as was my dad so perhaps we're more susceptible to hearing about it but it's definitely something I've noticed.

I don't begrudge them their pride at all though, I'm glad for them.

Mexicantortilla · 25/03/2022 20:16

Haha, we are from Yorkshire but now live in a neighbouring county and when our son was born my DH offered to turn out of the drive to go to the “Yorkshire” hospital but I’d booked into local one and he’s NEVER let me forget it! Lighthearted of course but he’s deffo gutted that his only son was not born in Yorkshire
