"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

Yes, my former manager was form Yorkshire and she moved from London back home. When she would visit us and we said something as simple as the sun is lovely today, she would quickly say Oh in Yorkshire you can walk on the garden and enjoy the light. And when it was raining Oh in Yorkshire we can go home and have a nice cuppa. We were like Humm we can do that do he in London!!!… what I didn’t know that was a Yorkshire thing

Bravo45 · 25/03/2022 17:38

Mmm. Does this mean the person is apologised for being from Yorkshire, or are they apologising for being so.
I have lived in 5 counties and do not know where to start!

wasmarriedtoacockwomble · 25/03/2022 17:38

I’m from Yorkshire and have never said ‘I’m from Yorkshire so……’ and I can honestly say I’ve never heard anyone else say it either. Now my guess is that your just a jealous southerner 🤣

MrsPetty · 25/03/2022 17:41

Totally! ExSIL and husband. From cheapness to misery all apparently related to the county of their birth …. 🤷🏼‍♀️

DonaPatrizia · 25/03/2022 17:44

There are plenty of people like me who are actually from Yorkshire but you don't know that because we don't tell you! A minority of professional Yorkies do this and yes, it's tedious. They don't do it when they are in Yorkshire, with other Yorkshire people, obviously. I imagine it is because they are nervous out of their comfort zone.

fuzzywuzzywombat · 25/03/2022 17:46

So what! We're proud of the place dispite the total south north bias.
You're just jealous . I bet you crow about , your kids grades, your nice car, your cleaner, whatever else you're proud of. Let us have something please!

FeeLock · 25/03/2022 17:52

@Odilla Absolutely! I've even started responding with, "Thanks for that; as I'm from Kent I'll bear that in mind ..." I'm not sure my irony is travelling all the way up the A1, though ... Wink

Sunnysal · 25/03/2022 17:57

Im from Bradford which is proper Yorkshire, I moved to the frontier town of Sheffield in 1974when people used to say...Your not from round here are you ,love?...My accent obviously gave me away.

Livinthedream84 · 25/03/2022 18:00

Because they are proud of where they come from? Because there’s plenty to be proud of? Because they don’t want anyone to think they are a soft southerner? Dunno

I’m from Yorkshire. Certainly not the first thing I’d tell people about myself but if I was asked where I came from id tell them. Why does it bother you so much op? No need to be jealous of us Yorkshire folk we are pretty friendly up ere! Grin

tommyhoundmum · 25/03/2022 18:03

People from Lancashire say the only good thing to come out of Yorkshire is the road to Lancashire. Not me, of course
.

Schmz · 25/03/2022 18:04

I’ve never heard anyone announce that they are from Yorkshire 🤣
I like Yorkshire tea bags - should I announce that ??

MincePieandBaileys · 25/03/2022 18:06

Sean Bean doesn't help with his 'Where everything's done proper' Yorkshire tea advert.

Being a Lancashire lass, from the other side of the Pennines, and still remembering the War of the Roses, I'm not a great fan of Yorkshire.

Littlebittasunshine · 25/03/2022 18:07

My mum's from Yorkshire and we don't have a great relationship. She left us as kids to sod off back to her beloved Yorkshire. and when we went to visit me and Me and my brother were treated pretty poorly by most people we came into contact with up there for being 'posh' or 'soft southerners' I have no idea why they're so proud of being from Yorkshire to be honest I tried for many years to like it but i found a lot of them to be incredibly ignorant and racist.

annawithabanner · 25/03/2022 18:11

That’s hilarious / I find it so because I’m from Yorkshire 😂😂

TackyTart1 · 25/03/2022 18:11

I’m not just from Yorkshire…I’m from North Yorkshire!

Yehbut · 25/03/2022 18:12

No but I moved to Yorkshire from London and whenever my parents visited, in shops or dog walk would say to strangers ‘I’m from London’. I think they thought they might curtesy.

Templeblossom · 25/03/2022 18:14

@MoonOnASpoon

*Its piss taking and passive aggressiveness though. No one cares that they are from Yorkshire though and the sympathy is really snide.*

This kind of illustrates the whole point. To me it's funny and warm, there's a kind of self piss-take going on. It's far from aggressive or snide ... but I get that if you don't get it, you don't see that and you think it's genuinely about being smug and superior.

But because the Yorkshire person's experience is that other people don't get it, that just adds to the Yorkshire camaraderie.

Really? Its meant to be funny? Why? Whats funny about someone endlessly banging on about Yorkshire and telling you endlessly they feel sorry for you in a snarky, sarcastic way? Confused This was someone I worked with, it wasnt remotely funny just tedious. Every bloody day. No one liked him and it was a huge relief when he left.
FranT · 25/03/2022 18:16

I am from East Yorkshire, but don't need to announce it, because as soon as I open my mouth, (or Gob as it's known here), there's no disguising my accent! We are very friendly folk though.

Lem1984 · 25/03/2022 18:17

James Martin is one of those people. I'm from South Yorkshire and it isn't really a thing here.

Mrschristmasqueen · 25/03/2022 18:17

West Yorkshire over here - 'proper' Yorkshire. Nowt wrong with being proud of your roots, especially when those roots are Yorkshire! We have the countryside, the cities, we'll talk to anyone (and love the reaction of Southerners when we dare to say hello to a STRANGER in the street Shock), the puddings, christmas cake with cheese. We even have our own language! Anyway, we have to announce we're from God's Own Country because people sometimes confuse us with being from Lancashire and that's offensive to my people Grin

Benjispruce5 · 25/03/2022 18:18

Never heard anyone say this op.

Fairislefandango · 25/03/2022 18:19

So what! We're proud of the place despite the total south north bias.
You're just jealous . I bet you crow about , your kids grades, your nice car, your cleaner, whatever else you're proud of. Let us have something please!

But it doesn't make sense. What do you mean 'let us have something'? Are you suggesting people in Yorkshire don't have cars, kids (or cleaners Confused )etc as well? Besides, people who live in other counties also like their areas, but don't have the reputation for banging on about where they come from!

As for jealousy... well, Yorkshire is very nice, but no nicer than either of the counties I've most recently lived in (Cumbria and Oxfordshire).

KneadingKitty · 25/03/2022 18:19

It's just a little joke we have in Yorkshire. Amused that you're annoyed enough to make a thread about it Grin

Wimbunds · 25/03/2022 18:20

@MargotMoon
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

toomanytwinkies · 25/03/2022 18:20

Yes this. I don’t know why some people think where they are from is a personality trait.

I’m Welsh and there are professional Welsh people too. 🤣
