"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

my dh is from yorkshire and he's amazing!

he doesn't boast about being from yorkshire, but if i was i would definitely boast about it, and i'm happy just to be an honorary yorkshire woman...

TheChronicalTales · 24/03/2022 12:50

My ex used to do this about wearing a coat. He’s refuse to wear a coat in the middle of winter and then stand there absolutely freezing and say “I don’t wear a coat because I’m from Yorkshire”, always ruined our night because he’d be there with a face on him and in a bad mood because he was cold. I threw that one back.

Lhddujvf · 24/03/2022 12:52

😂😂😂 I've noticed this too!

toomanytwinkies · 24/03/2022 12:52

Yorkshire is like Cornwall in that people strongly identify with their county.

At least Cornwall has its own language and cultural identity though. I’m not sure why Yorkshire is different to any where else up North.

Yea! I went to New York with someone from Yorkshire, in December! They refused to wear a coat but they were so cold walking over Brooklyn bridge they had to take the tube back to the hotel 🤣🤣🤣

I love Yorkshire folk, they're a strong breed and friendly. It's nice to take pride in where you are from. There are bigger things to take issue with!

Peregrina · 24/03/2022 12:54

South Yorkshire is a modern invention (taking mostly from areas covered by the old West Riding)

But this is where the idea that Sheffield is not proper Yorkshire like Leeds, Bradford or Halifax are, because it nudges up to Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire

Goldenbear · 24/03/2022 12:57

Yes, tbf plenty of people in the south-eadt definitely don't think there is a world beyond London and the home counties or if they do it is in a quaint way as in a place maybe ideal for a spring break but not to live in!

Mycatsgoldtooth · 24/03/2022 12:57

You’re just jealous you’re not from Yorkshire OP Wink

Goldenbear · 24/03/2022 12:58

When other southerners will be in those places anyway!

SevenWaystoLeave · 24/03/2022 12:59

My late step-dad was from Lancashire and was always ready to make it clear that he wasn't from Yorkshire

Slushynana · 24/03/2022 13:00

Forget about the new dangled boundaries that were imposed on us, to true Yorkshire people this is Yorkshire

"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?
SofiaSoFar · 24/03/2022 13:00

I'd rather hear Yorkshire people talking about being from Yorkshire than hear a southern accent saying anything at all.

Too much, "I fink it cost free farsand paands", etc.

Urgh.

Slushynana · 24/03/2022 13:00

New fangled

'Up' from where? I'm guessing London, same as the weather presenters who refer to the 'far north' on the national forecast because it's far from London.

I reckon Yorkshire does have its own cultural identity and, if not its own language, certainly a dialect.

I can only assume you’re ok with everyday sexism, racism and so on too Hmm It’s not so very long ago that these things were classed as mild ribbing… Didn’t the cricketers try and use banter as a defence for their blatant racism at Yorkshire CC club? Except it wasn’t banter, was it? And neither is this.[/quote]
100% completely different. The defining factor is how the "victims" of the banter feel about it. Not one single person complaining about this thread appears to come from Yorkshire. Us proud Yorkshire folk, we love it. Just more evidence of how everyone else is so jealous of those of us lucky enough to be from God's own county.

I hear people say 'down south' all the time because south is down to them... likewise saying 'up north', it's not a snub

No one in the south pronounces thousand like that
Crunched · 24/03/2022 13:10

No one in the south pronounces thousand like that

Danny Dyer does.

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 24/03/2022 13:11

As a Cumbrian I feel sorry for people in Yorkshire because they weren't born in England's best county and the true north. Grin

Goldenbear · 24/03/2022 13:12

SofiaSoFar, so it is ok to say, 'T' farm or T' shop' but not have a Southern accent. North London accent like Amy Winehouse or Adele would really be excruciating for you and yet that is also part of a culture and heritage just like in 'Yorkshire'.

My Granddad was exactly the same AND he used to complain that Yorkshire folk announce where they're from in the same way old ladies announce their age when no-one's asked.

Oh, do grow uip, or find another group to 'defend', even if they don't want your interference!

wizzler · 24/03/2022 13:27

I would like to point out to a pp that Sheffield is in Yorkshire because Sean Bean is from Sheffield and I dare you to tell him he isn't Yorkshire !

claireb7rg · 24/03/2022 13:27

I live in Yorkshire (was born in London), my dad is from Yorkshire, my partner is from Yorkshire, my children were born in Yorkshire, I've lived in 3 out of the 4 counties for a total of 15 years and have been to 2 Yorkshire universities but I've not heard this
