"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

I always thought that it was God's own Country not God's own County?

Ah well, what would a Yellowbelly know?

schroeder · 24/03/2022 13:31

I identify with this so much. I can't understand why they all think it's so great? Too hilly, crap beer, chips cooked in lard! Bleugh

MoonOnASpoon · 24/03/2022 13:31

At least Cornwall has its own language and cultural identity though. I’m not sure why Yorkshire is different to any where else up North.

It's true that places with a strong identity like that are often geographically distinct, a peninsula like Cornwall or an island. So it is a bit odd, but definitely very strongly felt.

He stood at Iguacu Falls and said 'it's a bit like Malham Cove'

Well he does have a point :o I'm constantly baffled that Malham Cove isn't better known. It's amazing!

MoonOnASpoon · 24/03/2022 13:34

Crap beer? CRAP BEER!?

Landlord is the best beer in the world.

And the hills are the best bits!

JudgeJ · 24/03/2022 13:36

You see I’m from Norfolk and I love it, but learned not to divulge this from a very young age as I would generally get the piss taken out of me and asked whether my parents were brother and sister….. hopefully for the sake of my kids that sort of shite is dying out now.

As a Lancastrian, married to a Tyke and living in Norfolk I feel well qualified to comment, if anyone makes Norfolk comments I threaten to High Six them. I do miss the Lancashire/Yorkshire hills, I watch Last of the Summer WIne for a nostalgia boost, both are lovely counties.

MoonOnASpoon · 24/03/2022 13:37

I definitely think of Sheffield as Yorkshire. People's Republic of South Yorkshire as we knew it in the 80s.

Chikapu · 24/03/2022 13:37

I am from Yorkshire but I never feel the need to announce it to anyone Wink

Delatron · 24/03/2022 13:38

Too hilly 🤣. It’s unnerving if a county is too flat.

Agree Malham Cove is stunning.

Peregrina · 24/03/2022 13:41

I definitely think of Sheffield as Yorkshire.

I do, having been born there, and so did my grandparents having lived there all their lives, but they used to get very upset by Leeds people saying that they were not true Yorkshire.

Zilla1 · 24/03/2022 13:43

Sheffield is Yorkshire, much to the disgust of people from elsewhere in Yorkshire, even the parts of Sheffield stolen from other counties to make a budget more viable.

Chely · 24/03/2022 13:44

Never noticed this. You must just know some weird Yorkshire folk.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 24/03/2022 13:46

@Slushynana

Forget about the new dangled boundaries that were imposed on us, to true Yorkshire people this is Yorkshire
Yep we used to have WRCC stamped under our school chairs.

As they well us from Yorkshire say if it's not from Yorkshire it's shite WinkGrin

JudgeJ · 24/03/2022 13:46

@RonniePickering

If you had said that a few times where I used to work, in Salford, you would have got a sympathetic ear and something like Don't worry, we all have ours crosses to bear! Just make sure your passport's up to date.

😂 That's another thing I learned when I moved here, people from Salford don't like to be classed as from Manchester, could be why I announced my Yorkshireness 😂

My Head threatened to fire me when I said that I thought Salford was a suburb of Manchester!! I'd no idea that it's a city, Manchester and Salford being the closest cities in the UK, outside London.
schroeder · 24/03/2022 13:47

See Yorkshire people are horrible even to other yorshire people for somehow not being yorkshire enough. There's a village on the yorkshire Lincolnshire border where people get the piss taken out of them for being from lincs.
How very friendly Hmm

A farmer in Yorkshire sees a man drinking from his stream, so he shouts ,
“Ey up cocker, tha dunt wanna be drinkin watta frum theer, its full o hoss pee an cow shite an it could kill thee”
The man says: "Excuse me Sir, I am a banker from the South East, can you speak more slowly and clearly please”
The farmer replies: " if....you.... Use.... Two ....Hands....... You....Wont.... Spill ......Any"

germsandcoffee · 24/03/2022 13:49

I never say it but then my accent is pretty obvious 😜

toomanytwinkies · 24/03/2022 13:51

'Up' from where? I'm guessing London, same as the weather presenters who refer to the 'far north' on the national forecast because it's far from London.

I reckon Yorkshire does have its own cultural identity and, if not its own language, certainly a dialect.

I dunno there’s a sign on the motorway that says ‘The North’ I imagine past that point 🤣🤣🤣
Debroglie · 24/03/2022 13:58

We teach it at school here.
In all yorkshire schools all students are required to pledge allegiance to the county every morning before lessons begin and after taking the school whippet for a run.

Fernandina · 24/03/2022 14:09

I'm from Essex, so obviously I never mention it. Grin

There's also another brand of person who always manages to shoehorn their make of car into any conversation: as in 'I'm going to the supermarket in the Audi '. Just why? Nobody cares.

TommyShelby · 24/03/2022 14:15

This definitely applies to all the areas with a strong regional identity. I’ve moved around so much I don’t think I qualify to be from anywhere anymore but people tediously wanging on about where they are from can be found everywhere.

I worked with someone once who asked me if dunking biscuits in her tea was a Brummy thing? No. Get a bloody grip.

Only yesterday someone rang me for a password reset because they were locked out, only to ask if they had been locked out because they were born in Wales. Wtf!? You and the other 5000 people who work in the company! You’re not special princess!

NippyWoowoo · 24/03/2022 14:20

A vegan? From Yorkshire?? Get real please!
Grin

Yes, exactly. South Yorkshire is a recognised republic 😀

South Yorkshire is considered not as posh as York, Harrogate, Knaresborough etc. But it is sooo still Yorkshire, of course! I mean, Sean Bean isn't from Shropshire, is he?!

The Lincs debate is a bit tricky. There's a road where you are in South Yorkshire, then less than a mile in Notts, then in North Lincs. In the space of like one mile.

But the postcode is DN for Doncaster. South Yorkshire. Thank God.

(I hope everyone realises I'm speaking lightly here! ☺️)

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/03/2022 14:42

Does anyone remember the episode of eat well for less with the couple who only drank Yorkshire tea & they'll know if it’s a swap as we only drink Yorkshire tea, then complained the new tea was awful.

The look on their faces when they realised it hadn’t been swapped.

Calandor · 24/03/2022 14:51

Because we identify very strongly with our county more than our country 🤷‍♀️ We're raised with a huge sense of pride in where we come from. Can't really help it. Soz it bothers you so much it's just integral to our identity.

Is a flat cap part of the uniform?!
