"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?

I was married to a Yorkshire man.
We are now divorced.
He now earns more than any person I have ever met and spends less on pretty much everything than anyone I have ever met.
He was always on a high salary but throughout our marriage he would always buy me flowers from supermarkets at the end of the day which were about to be thrown out because they were (or were about to) wilt and had a sad little sticker on them saying "7p" or something like that............
I strongly suspect he treats the woman he ran off with the same way to this day.......

My cousin's husband is a Yorkshireman. I love love love his accent. He's so down to earth and never makes a fuss, never bigs himself up, even though he's a Dr of aerodynamics. He'd rather talk about a good breakfast, and he cooks a mean one! Lovely guy

Laniania · 24/03/2022 12:15

Yorkshire Tea is ho hum imo, the real tea of Yorkshire is Betty's.

jackieh1987 · 24/03/2022 12:15

Ditto vegans and anyone with any trans views...

jackieh1987 · 24/03/2022 12:16

And cyclists.

De88 · 24/03/2022 12:19

Never noticed this ever. Though I fucking love Yorkshire and if I was from there I'd proudly announce it all the time.

bubblesbubbles11 · 24/03/2022 12:22

oh, and he never said "I'm from Yorkshire" but if he met someone new he almost always said "I'm from God's own county" and he was not joking when he said that.......

homeedregret · 24/03/2022 12:23

The only person I've ever known from Yorkshire was a lecturer at university and he reminded us at every opportunity. He was tight with money, because he was from Yorkshire. He always reversed in, drove out, because he was from Yorkshire. He had 3 children, because he was from Yorkshire. He was a militant organizer, because... you guessed it. This reminded me that I always said I would visit Yorkshire and haven't yet.

ImFree2doasiwant · 24/03/2022 12:25

My family do this time. About themselves, and others. "The new owner of the shop, she's from yorkshire/Yorkshire Town..." said to imply she must be a fabulous person.

This person's doctor said this , he's from Yorkshire (so he must be right"

sashh · 24/03/2022 12:25

@Laniania

Keep going and when you arrive in Burnley town centre… that’s What Lancashire feels like

I did once. Never again.

I was dragged there as a child and went to high school there.

I'm still in therapy.

RussianSpy101 · 24/03/2022 12:26

@Thoosa yes! This is exactly what it is!!!

Coffeetree · 24/03/2022 12:27

He had 3 children...because he was from Yorkshire.

MardyMandy · 24/03/2022 12:28

Except it wasn’t banter, was it? And neither is this

Even if it was bullying it doesn't matter to us Yorkshire folk.
We are in no doubt that we are superior in every way. And will not be cowed by a bit of gentle ribbing.

theemmadilemma · 24/03/2022 12:30

I did not know this.

I am not originally from Yorkshire. But now I live here I can understand why they proudly annouce it at any given opportunity. Grin

RussianSpy101 · 24/03/2022 12:30

@SiobhanSharpe yes, he is! His parents live in Handsworth. Lovely people. Of course, they would be wouldn't they being from Yorkshire 👀

that1970shouse · 24/03/2022 12:31

@olympicsrock

Pangolin - if people tell me they are form Yorkshire if reply “oh the WRONG side of the Pennines”. I’m from Lancashire. When we went to visit Granny in Yorkshire my dad taught us to shout as we went over the border “Look at all the slag heaps you know you’re in Yorkshire” 🤣😂😂
Look at a map. Lancashire is on the left side of the Pennines therefore Yorkshire is on the ...?
Bluechinavase · 24/03/2022 12:33

Surely everyone identifies from the area they were brought up in? It's a British way of making conversation and common bonds. I never tell anyone where I'm from unless they ask though it's kinda obvious from my Scottish accent. But then other Scottish people will try to pin it down further. I live in the east coast now but was brought up in Lanarkshire, lived in Glasgow, spent lots of time in the Highlands so it's like a tribal guessing game for them. But I love that. And I love accents.

MardyMandy · 24/03/2022 12:35

Also because Yorkshire is better and nicer than everywhere else 😀😀💕

It’s this last sentence which makes the constant Yorkshire nationalism thing feel boastful, arrogant, insular and ignorant to me

That's because you don't get it.

Yorkshiregold · 24/03/2022 12:37

I fear my username proves your point ……..

nosyupnorth · 24/03/2022 12:38

Most people have a sense of cultural identity based on where they're from.

I'd much rather deal with yorkshire folk saying they're from yorkshire than the many southeners (and particularly londoners) I've encountered who forget there is a world outside of where they're from.

RussianSpy101 · 24/03/2022 12:38

@olympicsrock I think the slag heaps were to try and keep those from Lancashire out!

FrancescaContini · 24/03/2022 12:44

@MrsTerryPratchett

It's like being vegan, the few who announce it constantly ruin it for the rest Grin

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 24/03/2022 12:44

I didn't my dad went one better. He lived to travel but everywhere he went was compared to Yorkshire.

He stood at Iguacu Falls and said 'it's a bit like Malham Cove'

I tell people I'm from Yorkshire all the time. I'm proud of it, even though logically I'm not sure why.

MissDollyMix · 24/03/2022 12:47

Re the Viking history - this may be obvious to others but I only recently connected the dots that the ancient kingdom of Northumbria was literally that - North of the Humber (hence Northumbria) So yes, Yorkshire was at one time part of Northumbria.
The original county of Yorkshire was divided into three - hence the ridings (North, West and East) - which came from the Viking word for 'third or thirdings' - South Yorkshire is a modern invention (taking mostly from areas covered by the old West Riding)
Sorry! I'm a bit of Yorkshire geek... it's probably because I'm from Yorkshire Grin
