"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Odilla · 24/03/2022 00:06

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

I’m from Yorkshire
However I only arrived here when I was 2 so it’s questionable claim really
I live not far from the border with Lancs though so can access Leeds or Manchester as easily. I used to work in Leeds but was promoted and asked to move to the Manchester office some years ago. When I told my Leeds clients I got a lot of sympathy and one “Bloody Hell lass, tha must have really pissed someone off for them to do that to you”

noraclavicle · 24/03/2022 08:39

@Pangolin44

I'm from Yorkshire. I only tell people if they ask (or if they're from Lancashire, I'm contractually bound, as a Yorkshire woman, to point out that it's on the wrong side of the Pennines).
Lol, yes I usually stick to the contract (usually Wink)

Anyway, it’s God’s Own Country, so what do you expect OP? And we’re hardly going to say we’re from Suffolk.

StopFeckingFaffing · 24/03/2022 08:41

Great thread

I'm 'from Yorkshire' (although actually born in London) and we do seem to have a clearer regional identity and pride than many other areas of UK

I can't deny I am probably guilty of flaunting my Yorkshireness on occasion

Sorry not sorry 😜

Deathraystare · 24/03/2022 08:41

@RampantIvy

(Whispers) I used to live in Croydon. Did NOT make a habit of mentioning that though!

LadyPropane · 24/03/2022 08:42

I recognise this but not specifically with Yorkshire. Some people just bang on and on about the place they are from. Yorkshire is bloody massive so you maybe you hear Yorkshire more than other places and it gives the impression that they do it more?

Pick literally any part of the UK and there will be people from there who mention it constantly.

isthatanotherbastardgrey · 24/03/2022 08:45

Yup, DH does it.

Usually followed by why he'd rather be living in hole in't road eating cold gravel for tea in Yorkshire, than his comfy house in rural Sussex, and gazing wistfully at the sausage dogs wishing they were whippets... all whilst sipping a caramel macchiato and considering a jolly over to Tunbridge Wells.

He's a swirl of contradictions, god love him.

KnowingMeKnowingYouAhaaaa · 24/03/2022 08:46

People did it at uni and when I went travelling you knew who was from Yorkshire (the accent tells you they are if they don't!), but equally anyone Irish or Scottish did the same, oh and Canadians they LOVE to tell you they are Canadian (not american). I like northerners, I'm from the other large northern county, so I don't mind the whole I'm from Yorkshire and proud thing, everyone I've met from there has always been very friendly anyway.

OvaHere · 24/03/2022 08:47

I agree. Imagine if Yorkshire had been replaced by some protected characteristic. Being from Yorkshire is part of someone's identity. It's not ok to ridicule it.

I know it might look that way but I think most Yorkshire people find it humorous. It speaks to the strong cultural identity held. It would be far worse if we were ignored. Nobody would get to hear the gospel of God's Own Country then. Grin

Fizbosshoes · 24/03/2022 08:47

I don't think its a thing with all counties. I've never heard anyone say they were a proud bedfordshire/surrey/gloucestershire/kent/northamptonshire/Lincolnshire etc man or woman?

The people I notice it most are Yorkshire, cornwall and "proper" cockney.

carriebradshawwithlessshoes · 24/03/2022 08:47

This thread is hilarious. Yep, born and bred and live here still.

I don’t ever think to tell people but find other people have (often strange) views! For example we got married in September, some southern friends (despite a countrywide heatwave) kept telling me they would be wearing their warm clothes as ‘it’s always cold in Yorkshire.’ My friend insisted her DH do the same but then told me after the wedding they had to keep pulling in to services on the motorway heading north to remove layers because it was just so hot!! No shit Sherlock! 🤣.

Only last week I was working with a senior London lawyer. He remarked that he found a junior colleague of mine very arrogant but then he was trying to work out if he was just arrogant or if it was the ‘usual Yorkshire bluntness.’ 😬😬😬!

But no, for the record I’ve never volunteered it in conversation?! Why would I? I don’t have a strong accent and whilst my baths and castle pronunciations will tell you I’m from the north I doubt anyone would say Yorkshire in particular. But it’s neither here nor there if they do!

muddyford · 24/03/2022 08:48

The Cornish do it too. It's about a strong sense of where you come from.

Never really thought about it before and probably because I lived in the north near Yorkshire this rings so many bells.

Definitely agree.

Especially if they no longer live in Yorkshire but a nearby county

longwayoff · 24/03/2022 08:48

Nope. Not my experience at all. Maybe you're meeting the wrong people?

Thisbastardcomputer · 24/03/2022 08:49

I'm from Yorkshire and I don't remember ever telling anyone that, but they probably pick it up from my accent.

NinaDefoe · 24/03/2022 08:49

The entire place is just full of people saying they're from Yorkshire, day in day out.

You are making me laugh OP!

There is definitely some truth in it but I find that those ‘born and bred’ in London or Wales are also very keen to tell you that they’re a Londoner or Welsh!
I’ve also met a number of 2nd generation Irish who are VERY keen that you know their heritage!

CloudPop · 24/03/2022 08:49

The entire place is just full of people saying they're from Yorkshire, day in day out.

That's why the brontes shut themselves in that wee house and didn't talk to anyone for ages. Every time they went outside all they could hear was "I'm from Yorkshire".

@Odilla 😂😂😂😂😂

DalarnaHorses · 24/03/2022 08:52

When people say they are from Yorkshire, I feel obliged to say I'm from Lancashire, it's like Yorkshire only better Grin😈

RegardingMary · 24/03/2022 08:52

We're the vegans of the North!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/03/2022 08:54

Just make sure your passport's up to date

I got asked that in Hampshire because of my Derbyshire accent Grin

It has to be admitted though that Yorkshire's the most gorgeous county - well, after my own of course!! - and I swear it's about the last place where a stranger would make you a cuppa if the teashop's closed

LizzieLazzie · 24/03/2022 08:54

The 4 counties that constitute Yorkshire are : North Yorkshire
West Yorkshire
South Yorkshire
East Yorkshire

RampantIvy · 24/03/2022 08:54

Grin @Deathraystare

Hoppinggreen · 24/03/2022 08:55

Well at least we are actually from the place we claim to be from.
Unlike Americans who always claim to be X American (usually Irish).
Nobody cares where you great great great great Grandparents came from. Your passport says American , get over it!

CrazyTimes123 · 24/03/2022 08:55

@OvaHere champion Grin

@Foolsrule

What an odd thread - frankly it’s pretty nasty.
And that comment highlights one of the great problems of the day, in the narrow minds of some people we're not allowed to gently tease anymore, it's always called 'bullying'. If you're so upset by the thread I suggest you find another, I'm sure there's something for you somewhere to get hot under the collar about.
BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 24/03/2022 08:56

They even have their own tea 😛
