Tips on flying with an infant?

Bells3032 · 23/03/2022 21:41

Will be flying to Jersey (less than an hour) with my by then 4 month old (though she'll only be 3 months by corrected age). She's formula fed.

Any tips on flying: handling popping ears, keeping baby calm etc

Thanks

Feed them a bottle on take off to reduce ear popping. Have a back pack changing bag if you don’t already- babies are fine to travel with- toddlers are hell on earth!

Make sure you pack a spare top for you - nothing worse than travelling wearing baby puke. Plenty of wet wipes and ready made bottles purchased after security. Have you got a baby carrier? We used a Tula for many flights up to the age of 3 1/2. Pack a blanket in hand luggage - flights can be cool and too cold for an infant. Other than that, good luck!

Less than an hour will be a doddle. By the time you’re in the air you’re on the way back down.

I did a 9 hour flight with DD at the same age (alone). Even that wasn’t that challenging (apart from having to express milk in the toilets).

I did 23 hours flying time at that age. My DD is now almost 7, and it's still the best she's ever slept! Echo comment about a spare top for you in case of vomit. Feed on way up and way down to help soothe sore ears.
You'll be fine!

Another vote for a full change of clothes for you.

Don’t worry about it - an hour is fine, they’ll probably sleep anyway. I flew from Adelaide to Sydney when mine was 6 weeks and it was so easy, then from Syd to London at 8 months and even that was fine.
The worst was having a 3 year old and a 1 year old from Syd to London, if I’d had a step counter I reckon it would have shown me doing about 1000 laps of that damn plane Grin

Easy!! You’ll be fine ! My now 1 year old and myself have flown to Dublin 8 times now just the 2 of us - been going since she was 3 months old

Feed on take off - actually I just fed her as much as she liked and hoped she’d doze off

Brought a Few Crinkly books

Had a Sophie giraffe for her to chew on

If she cries - well it’s only an hour you’ll get through it

It’s harder now she’s bigger as she wants to get down, walk around, needs snacks, hates being trapped in my lap in a belt, gets fed up,

Those younger days were bliss when flying tbh

Enjoy

Use a sling, much less faff than a buggy. If she takes a dummy make sure you have a few in case they get dropped and use for take off and landing - feeding for take off is fine but I would try and avoid it for landing in case it all comes back up again. Make sure you have a change of clothes for both of you, wearing baby sick does not make for a pleasant flight.
