To those with little kids - how often do you get sick?

I know this should be posted in General Health but trying to get a few more responses.

Basically, I have two kids - 3 and 5 - who have colds etc a lot, which I know is normal, but how normal is it for them to be passed to me every time? I'm literally coming down with a cold/sore throat every few weeks at the moment. I feel as though at my age, my immune system should be a lot tougher, not constantly going down with every runny nose my kid wipes on me. I hardly ever got sick a few years ago.

So just wondered - anyone else constantly sick, or should I check this out with doc?

Thanks! Enjoy the sunshine!

Very rarely, in fact I would say I get sick more than my kids and I get sick usually once a year (usually around the transition to spring I get a bad cold- or this year covid). Touch wood my 1yr old and 4yr old are rarely sick.

Caspianberg · 23/03/2022 12:13

Not yet. Ds is nearly 2. He had hand/foot/mouth about 6 months ago , I think he caught at airport. But otherwise he and us haven’t had even a sniffle since he was born ( actually I think since covid started, masks have helped)

SartresSoul · 23/03/2022 12:14

Not every time they do by any means. Thankfully norovirus doesn’t happen often in our household touch wood, last time was 3 years ago and I did catch it but didn’t the time before. With colds I’d say I get 3-4 a year whereas my 1 and 3 year old’s seem to constantly have one during winter.

My 3 year old had hand, foot and mouth last summer and none of us caught it.

Colds- every single time one of the little monsters brings one home
Stomach bugs- literally never, the kids catch them, and despite the cleaning up and the cuddles I just don't catch them. Dh does though, every time.

narcdad · 23/03/2022 12:16

Vary rarely do I catch what my kids have, I get a cold / cold sore a few times a year

YorkshireIndie · 23/03/2022 12:24

It depends. I pick up most colds and one out of two stomach bugs (did the whole house bar one 🙈)

Easymeasy · 23/03/2022 12:30

Child rarely is sick. I have friends whose children are unwell from 1week to the next. Guess it's immune system.

bookworm1982 · 23/03/2022 12:33

I actually never pick up their stomach bugs, I should have said, even if I'm covered in their sick (which I usually am). It's just the colds.

When mine started nursery at 2 it felt like he gave me something new most months with a break over the summer. I probably had 6 or more illnesses a year during that time. It’s better now he’s at school although this past winter I was basically ill for 3 months with various things including covid.

lifeuphigh · 23/03/2022 12:46

You can get this Vicks First Defence stuff which you spray up your nose as soon as you're exposed to a cold. I don't know if it works but worth a shot? Take a high dose Vitamin C?

squirrelnutkins1 · 23/03/2022 12:47

I'm the same, feel like I've got a cold / sore throat all the time but don't pick anything else up. It's so annoying!! I never used to be I'll before having her!

girlmom21 · 23/03/2022 12:53

I've got a 2 year old and a baby and I've only been really badly poorly once and it was a 12 hour thing.

I don't know if it's that we just carry on now where we'd have taken to bed before kids though?

LabelMaker · 23/03/2022 12:54

Pretty much all the time. It's awful. Work hate me.

Bunnycat101 · 23/03/2022 13:43

Not all the time. I reckon 10-25% of sickness bugs. Had an awful one a few months ago just as I was supposed to have an interview. Had both children with full on projectile vomiting, I was bad and husband had a slightly off tummy so he didn’t do as badly.

Colds maybe 10% for me and 25% for my husband who normally goes down with more than me. We’ve all had a horrific one recently but I’ve been worse.

My two have been permanently snotty since October. The little one really struggles to sleep when stuffy so we’ve had broken nights for 6 months. Hoping for a few months reprieve in the summer (although my hay fever will then kick in by May so if I’m lucky there might be 2 months of no sneezing in the house. Gah.

Readyforspring · 23/03/2022 13:46

Rarely maybe 2x a year

lapasion · 23/03/2022 14:03

A lot, but most of the time it’s low level sick and I can get on with things. Sniffles and sore throats are my main thing. Although not helped by having a bit of a shit diet and being inactive. A couple of bouts of vomiting and getting the flu in ten years, which meant I was properly stuck in bed sick.
