I read this story. The babies waiting to be collected by the richer European or further afield families who have purchased them now stuck in a dreadful situation.

I hope they can get these mothers and babies out safely.

I don't agree however with the purchase of a baby from another country. I understand why the poor Ukraine women sell their babies to richer families but I find it sad and distasteful.

I posted in the wrong place and have asked MN to move to chat.

Although not unreasonable to want to get the babies and mothers out urgently to safety. Some may feel buying babies is reasonable though, especially if they have done it.

Thanks for moving.

The story is awful. So many babies trapped.

A tragic side effect of trafficking in human beings which should not be allowed in the first place.

I agree, it's really awful that human trafficking is allowed to go on. However, it is minimised by 'but we can't have a baby of our own'. The poor Ukraine women who are poor have few choices and one in a story I read is on her second surrogate and is using the money earned from it to put towards a home for her other children. Very sad.

Another lady managed to contact her baby purchasers who met her at the border and took baby and she has not heard from then since.

I read an article which said a very few ‘intended parents’ are bring the pregnant mothers and their families over to their countries to keep them safe but many are not because they want the babies to be born in the Ukraine so the ‘intended mother” can be named on the birth certificate as mother.

megletthesecond · 23/03/2022 09:44

It's awful. Jeremy Bowen (BBC) covered it last week. The logistics are a heartbreaking nightmare.

MaChienEstUnDick · 23/03/2022 09:46

Human trafficking is a messy, complicated, devastating business right enough.

Rua13 · 23/03/2022 09:52

I read that the babies need to be born in Ukraine as neighbouring countries do not recognise surrogacy.
Poor babies and their poor biological mothers.

DrinkingByTheLake · 23/03/2022 09:55

Renting wombs and buying babies is just wrong. Poor mothers and babies, used because some entitled pricks are rich enough to pay and are disgusting enough to take advantage.

Indeed, Ukraine has a system where the 'intended mother' is named as a birth mother on the birth certificate which appeals to richer foreigners. Hence having the baby born there and then can leave the country with it. What happens to the poor birth mother in a war torn country though? Do they even care.

How much is a surrogate Ukraine?
Surrogacy in Ukraine is estimated to cost approximately USD $40,000.

It's a horrendous trade and I hope this finally puts an end to it by exposing it as the disgusting exploitative people trafficking it really is.

Femalewoman · 23/03/2022 10:11

More than 2,000 children are born through surrogacy every year in Ukraine, the majority to foreign couples. It's a thriving 'business' and no doubt the people organising it make a lot of money. The mothers in Ukraine are very poor and see a way of supporting their other children/families.

I doubt it though.

Some don't care as long as they get a baby.

In Ukraine they do surrogacy a bit differently in that the intended recipient of the baby has the name put down as birth mother. They can then very easily take the baby from the country without all the 'legals' that other countries need. They just pick up baby and leave and assume it is their baby, not a purchased one. Baby trafficking at its finest.

This is the BBC piece on this. The movement of thes babies and their biological mothers is horrifying.

Charette · 23/03/2022 10:27

Does putting the 'intended mother' on the birth cert then remove any legal trace of the mother who carried and gave birth to the baby?

Clymene · 23/03/2022 10:29

I wonder how much psychological support Emma's oldest child is going to need given that for pretty much his entire life, she's been obsessively trying to have another child. 13 rounds of IVF followed by 3 attempts at surrogacy is not the behaviour of a mentally well person.
Clymene · 23/03/2022 10:30

And the BBC were recently promoting surrogacy on their CBeebies Instagram with the tagline 'Surrogacy Rocks!'

ComDummings · 23/03/2022 10:34

Those poor birth mothers and babies. Buying babies is so wrong.

Charette · 23/03/2022 10:37

That did occur to me too, @Clymene. I can't imagine having a mother who, every time she looks over her shoulder into the car back seat, feels disappointed to just see me, wrecking her fantasy of a whole 'gaggle' of children. That's a huge amount of pressure for a child.

I'm not sure but would assume so since only the intended mother is on the birth certificate.

Madness. Erase the birth mother completely.

It is sad and horrifying. Human trafficking should not be allowed in any form.
