DVLA and "old" V5

I just sold a vehicle to a friend of mine, filled out and posted the V5, she kept the "new keepers" slip.

Well it turns out she can't tax the vehicle using that, as they have changed the V5s and the new numbers are 12 digits long, not 11.

I only bought the vehicle in 2016 so it's not as if it was years and years ago! Is there any way round this for her, as the wait for a new V5 is around 13 WEEKS!!!

Can't you do it all online?

I managed to update a v5 online from 2012 last week.

She might be able to tax it at a post office with the old log book. Depending on the postoffice.

If not you could apply for a duplicate (£25, it’s straight forward automated so won’t be 13 weeks) and then you put it in her name.

If it’s a cheap £20 tax a year I’d be inclined to tax it whilst it’s being sorted out, there’s not much you can do with the car without the current log book (E.g you’ll have problems selling it on and notifying keeper changes)

You can tax it at the post office

You can't do new keeper online I don't think :(

It's not cheap tax unfortunately, but updating myself online, taxing then doing a new keeper might be an option, although we've sent off the current V5 so might get confusing! I'll look into that if we need to.

I've messaged to ask her to try the Post Office, fingers crossed that works!!

I'm just amazed they can do this and not let people know!

You go online and register that you have sold it and name her as the new owner at the same time. I did it on Saturday.
Then go online and set up payment for road tax. Print the proof or payment for road tax off and keep it in the car as it will show online as not being taxed.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 21/03/2022 17:28

I can't do it online @PattyMelt as we've already sent the paper copy by post :(

They did actually send replacement V5 documents. I was an idiot and destroyed the wrong version when I got mine so ended up paying for a replacement anyway. Might be worth having a double check through old files if you're a hoarder of documents (appreciate not everyone is as daft as me, but might be helpful).

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 21/03/2022 17:43

When did they send them? I'm just looking out my main car one to check it! :)

Yep, my main car which I bought in October 2018 has an old style V5 too, I definitely haven't been sent a replacement!

About 3 years ago I think. I was caught out when moving home and had the wrong V5.

DVLA weren't even that incompetent back then. It's ridiculous that they didn't send a new version to you. The email queries seem to be handled in reasonable time if you want to give that a shot.

Best of luck sorting it all out.

Ah. You won’t be able to do it at the post office. As you’ll need that to do it.
