Returning to work - career/job advice

I’m looking to return to work after seven years as a SAHM. I don’t want to return to the type of work I was doing before unless it’s a last resort, but I’m at a loss as to what to do instead (role could be long hours at certain times of the year which doesn’t fit with after school care at all, no prospects, salary hit the ceiling at £27k).

I’ve never been a career person and tbh despite having a degree I am absolutely not remotely academic (should never have gone to Uni really, mediocre BA) so returning to Uni is a no. I’ve looked at many short courses and nothing jumps out at me.

I wondered if anyone could recommend some websites or books which could help narrow down skills and experience vs interests etc please? I absolutely do not want to use a career coach as I have no interest in paying £££ when I’m never going to amount to much anyway. I’d just like to do a different role that fits in with family life.

National Careers Service

‘What Colour is Your Parachute?’ book.

I don’t know that I’d recommend Myers Briggs tests in terms of the results produced - but filling one in can prompt a degree of self-examination.

A browse around the

Mature Study and Retraining

board, here may suggest something you haven’t thought of.

I certainly don’t think one mediocre first degree necessarily indicates that academia isn’t for you - but the apprenticeship world has opened out considerably lately, so that might be an option. Once you work out what you want to do!
