Am I the only one?

In our house we don't have hot cross buns until Good Friday and Easter eggs until Easter Sunday. Mince pies in December only and advent calendar are opened daily. My kids think I'm mad to do this. Am I the only one?

I don't think it matters either way.

I agree with you on Easter eggs, mince pies and advent calendars, but hot cross buns are to be eaten all year round at every opportunity.

DaisyDozyDee · 20/03/2022 17:36

This is possibly related to religious upbringing that meant Good Friday was fasting and abstinence, so we wouldn’t have been allowed hot cross buns on Good Friday.

I agree with once pies and advent calendars - December only.

Hot cross buns I’ll eat leading up to Easter, ie. The month before. They’re probably one of my favourite type of cakes. The rest of the year, I’ll eat ordinary currant buns. Easter Eggs are for Easter Day, apart from the odd crème egg (or some thing similar), and then again only in the month before Easter.

My kids have advents on correct day.
We have hot cross buns when we fancy them
Mince pies prob as soon as they're in the shops.
Easter eggs often. Most of the time its cheaper than buying s bag of chocolate.
Ive probably eaten 20 eggs since Jan! Oops.

My household is the same, OP (except we don't have advent calendars). We are childfree, though, so don't have children pestering us for Easter Eggs etc. as soon as they appear on the shelves.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 20/03/2022 17:38

I never buy hot cross buns as I don't like them but the other things are normal aren't they?

What other way is there to do an advent calendar?

gingerhills · 20/03/2022 17:45

I agree - no mince pies before advent. Eggs on Easter Day. But I probably will have a couple of hot cross buns before Good Friday because DH will buy them and I like them. But not too often as they are very high in calories for something that looks like a meek little fruit bread bun with a tiny bit of pastry on top.

Nope We have whatever we want when we want it
We had pancakes today
I’ll eat hot cross buns anytime
And I’ve just finished off the mince That didn’t get used on the Christmas mince pies

I refuse to be dictated to by tradition

Do you have children? I think it's nice to have special things that you don't do every day to mark the passage of the year

Pancakes aren't special though, you can have them whenever you like unless I suppose you are very strict on Lent .
