Are you a detective?

Just reading a Rebus novel and realised I’ve never met anyone IRL who told me that’s what they were. I know a couple of people who are/have been in the police but not detectives. There must be quite a few about though!

Checks bank balance

Nope.

marqueses · 19/03/2022 21:55

I'm not but I know of a school dad who is. I think I'd have liked to be one, it seems like a really interesting job

burnthur5t · 19/03/2022 22:01

No but my brother's FIL is a private detective

Thestoppedfan · 19/03/2022 22:01

I was and it’s not as glamorous as it looks. There’s also a lot of paperwork.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 19/03/2022 22:02

I am 🕵🏻‍♀️👮🏻‍♀️

JohannSebastianBach · 19/03/2022 22:03

I've worked with a few in a civilian capacity. They were rather strange.

QuebecBagnet · 19/03/2022 22:03

A relative of mine was a detective chief superintendent and ran a murder investigation team.

Nicknacky · 19/03/2022 22:05

I’m a detective.

Redshoeblueshoe · 19/03/2022 22:06

I'm not, but I'd love to be able to ask about what stuff in crime novels is accurate - and what is absolute rubbish.
I'm watching Rebus at the moment

Mindtheears · 19/03/2022 22:12

Do you work your way up from being a PC or can you go straight to being a (trainee?) detective?

OP posts:
WeAreTheHeroes · 19/03/2022 22:15

Yes. An uncle. You used to have to be a PC first then transfer to CID. Pretty sure there are ways of joining the police service as a trainee detective now, a fairly recent development.

gooseygoosey12345 · 19/03/2022 22:15

My friend is a detective, it's definitely not as glamorous as it seems. Lots of long hours and not very pleasant!

Nicknacky · 19/03/2022 22:16

I spent 9 years in uniform before I applied for Cid, we don’t have direct entry in my force.

NoToLandfill · 19/03/2022 22:18

One of your school dads wears a stupid fucking Sherlock Holmes hat. Does that count?

singlepringlenotbychoice · 19/03/2022 22:20

Most people will just say they're in the police and only expand on their specific role if they're asked.

In most forces you have to complete your 2 year probationary period and then you can apply for "specialist" departments like CID etc

It's often portrayed as the elite team and glamourised....it's really not.

gaggiagirl · 19/03/2022 22:21

No but I listen to loads of true crime podcasts and feel like I'm the world's leading expert in solving shit now.

Karwomannghia · 19/03/2022 22:22

I know a PI but their main job is serving papers so not actually that exciting.

corlan · 19/03/2022 22:25

I don't know about other police forces but the Metropolitan police has a graduate training program for people who want to become detectives without serving as uniformed officers first.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 19/03/2022 22:30

My daughters father in law was a senior detective in the serious crime unit

Georgeskitchen · 19/03/2022 22:33

A couple of my old school hums ( now retired) one was a detective chief superintendent

Georgeskitchen · 19/03/2022 22:35

Oh and I did once tell a bloke who was chatting me up that I was a traffic cop.
He made a swift exit 🤣

dollardollardollar · 19/03/2022 22:37

Me too!

Red handed is my favourite. But I also love a bit of white collar crime.

stimpyyouidiot · 19/03/2022 22:37

I'd like to think I am 😁

Thunderpunt · 19/03/2022 22:39

@Nicknacky

I’m a detective.
Haha, I was coming on to say I was sure there was a Nicky on MN who was Grin
Nicknacky · 19/03/2022 22:40

@Thunderpunt Haha, I’m annual leave just now so I’ve almost managed to forget what my normal working day entails🙈
