Is there a lot of envy going around?

Been seeing a lot of posts where posters wonder how their neighbours/friends/relatives can afford such and such. I myself have had acquaintances asking me nosy questions such as "How much is your mortgage?" or "How much did you pay for that?" . I guess since times are hard, a lot of people are feeling hard done by, but it's really unpleasant:( I was brought up to never ask anyone about their financial affairs or spend too much worrying about other people's finances.

I think it's probably because the lines have shifted and it's making it more obvious who is just getting by and who has money to spare. It all feels the same until your utilities double and you're looking around to see who it's impacting, I suspect.

Indeed. Inequality is definitely increasing.

I know what you mean OP.

As a family I feel like we are running to stand still and we work so hard and have no spare cash. We had takeaway pizza tonight and I can’t remember the last time we did this and I was still worrying about the cost at the back of my mind.

Then I see friends booking holidays and buying new cars and I just think how so you do that?!?! And then I hate myself for being so judgy and jealous.

Mumsnet's never been any different really. So many people think they know the ins and outs of other people's finances and therefore think 'they shouldn't be able to afford that', but in reality they probably know Jack Shit about their private situations.
