Where & how often do hair dressers get their scissors sharpened? And can I take my house & sewing scissors to the same place? What does it cost? Many thanks

Our local hardware shop sharpens scissors for £1 a pair.

Alternatively you can sharpen them yourself by cutting foil. Google it.

You can buy knife and scissor sharpeners. Not expensive on Amazon.

I didn't know you could sharpen scissors with foil. I buy cheapo scissors and just replace when blunt.

I'm sure I once asked a barber this question and was told that good quality scissors (and electric clippers) don't actually need to be sharpened. Given how expensive hairdressing scissors are, it only takes one clumsy sharpening session to ruin them permanently.

I asked my hairdresser this and she gets them sharpened by a specialist sharpener who does the rounds of the local hairdressers/barbers.

She was horrified at the thought of getting the local hardware shop (only 2 doors down from her shop) to sharpen her scissors.

She also said she has one pair of scissors that cost hundreds of pounds! Shock

My mum sends hers here.

Thanks for this. I have a home sharpener but it's nothing like as good as brand new scissors. I'll google the tin foil thing, I've never heard of that. I wonder how it works?

I sharpen all scissors by folding up Tim foil and repeatedly cutting through it until the blades are sharp again.

Works a treat and doesn’t take long.

Tin foil. Aluminium foil.
