India is surrounded by hostile neighbors: China, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Russia to the North has been friendly to India and the Indian population will soon be larger than China's. Therefore India doesn't want to alienate a friendly neighbor who can supply the energy they need for their huge population. This seems to explain India's careful neutrality in the Ukraine-Russia war. They need a friend in their dangerous neighborhood.
