The older I get the more I realise most people are fickle cunts who will drop you like hot potato or stab you in the back if there's something in it for them

I've noticed this but more an increase in people choosing to look the other way / stay on the fence / not take sides. Sometimes showing loyalty to people means not sitting on the fence.

I feel it’s a less valued quality these days because loyalty sometimes implies self-sacrifice, putting some else’s needs first, being tolerant of ups and downs…. this doesn’t always fit with today’s uncompromising attitudes.

It's possible to be too loyal. I've made the mistake of being loyal to friends only to realise MUCH later that I was at best a friend of proximity or worst, the comic relief.

I think loyalty has zero value in itself, unless you think very carefully about who or what you’re being loyal to. It’s possible to be blindly loyal to a dreadful cause, or to think you’re being a ‘loyal friend’ when you’re in fact too passive to draw back from something your heart is no longer in.

I’m with you OP. Everything is transactional. What’s in it for me and my wants. Loyalty is a lovely enduring quality in relationships of all kinds.
