Why does it irk me that school skirts must be a certain length?

My DDs school has a strict on the knee (or below) skirt length policy. It really pisses me off! I just don’t see it’s anyone’s issue what length a school skirt is?! I don’t think above the knee is an issue.

Or am I cross because I feel it’s othering girls. I’m not aware of a similar boys rule?

I definitely think there should be rules, some of the skirts I’ve seen round here barely cover anything 😕

Icecreamandapplepie · 14/03/2022 21:05

There's pressure on girls to look alluring for boys.

I agree with the rule.

Vallmo47 · 14/03/2022 21:06

Boys don’t get an option whatsoever at my son’s school. Sometimes it’s hitting 30 degrees in July and the only thing he could do is wear a kilt (he wouldn’t because that’s what the girls wear).
I honestly applaud schools for having skirt length requirements - it’s ridiculous how girls are sexualised by shops and society. The skimpy so called shorts that barely cover the ass cheeks? Ugh. It’s not right nor normal. For the record I have a daughter as well and she needs to be reined in. Thank god schools agree with me on this or I’d be constantly battling whatever ridiculous fashion there is.

It’s not ‘othering’ girls, it’s safe guarding. Helps stop girls falling to the peer pressure of wearing tiny skirts. It’s a sensible rule. I’m sure if boys wore skirts the rule would be the same for them.

tiredanddangerous · 14/03/2022 21:08

Some of the girls at my dds school have skirts so short you can see butt cheek. The rules are needed!

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 14/03/2022 21:09

Also, the longer skirt length ensures I don't see the girls' knickers on a regular basis. Believe me, teaching staff don't want to be flashed.

IKnowYouDontTurnTheLightOn · 14/03/2022 21:11

Don’t be daft! Have you seen the length of girls’ skirts if there are no rules??? Leave nothing to the imagination.

Entirely inappropriate at school.

Pedallleur · 14/03/2022 21:11

I go past a school on my way to work and am convinced there is a competition for who can wear the shortest skirt. The girls have a hand over the back of the helpline to stop their arse going on display.

spotcheck · 14/03/2022 21:12

Seriously...it's a good rule

Pedallleur · 14/03/2022 21:12

Hemline but think there should be a helpline

QueenofLouisiana · 14/03/2022 21:12

Boys at DS’s school aren’t allowed low slung trousers (nor are girls who choose trousers option). So no pants should be on display. And yes, girls choosing the skirt should have it no shorter than 2inches above the knee. Seems a fair system.

Dilbertian · 14/03/2022 21:13

Are the boys allowed to wear trousers that don't cover their knees?

RampantIvy · 14/03/2022 21:13

The belts skirts I see on the girls at the local high school barely reach the top of their legs. You are being silly.

PickAChew · 14/03/2022 21:15

It's a sensible rule that discourages rolling up skirts at the waist until arse cheeks are on show.

Cbes · 14/03/2022 21:16

I’m with you OP. It’s controlling.

WaitingToExhale · 14/03/2022 21:16

I think it's needed. Some of the skirts that I've seen recently is ridiculous! Why are so you pissed off about it?

burnthur5t · 14/03/2022 21:24

Kids in school uniform are representing the school. The school's reputation and image is important hence rules

Pedallleur · 14/03/2022 21:25

They are children, it's not controlling. Where would or wouldn't it stop?

RampantIvy · 14/03/2022 21:29

@Cbes

I’m with you OP. It’s controlling.
Of course it isn't Hmm Are all school rules - don't run in the corridors, don't bully, hand your homework in on time, don't throw food around etc, controlling as well? Are dress codes in the workplace controlling?

I think you misunderstand what the meaning of controlling is.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/03/2022 21:29

What do you mean it’s ‘othering’ girls? How is it?? The boys have to wear trousers and presumably aren’t allowed to turn up in surf shorts.

School uniform is practising for dressing professionally so keeping your thighs under wraps is fair enough.

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 14/03/2022 21:35

Hi Op where my dds primary school is there is a high school up the road, I am not kidding some of the kids are a right state, I am parked up waiting to collect my dd and and I often see a pair of tights or rather the gusset of tights walking past my car window, These skirts are so short ,rolled up,whatever but they arent skirts! I agree with the hem restrictions, These kids apart from looking bloody ridiculous must be bloody freezing!

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 14/03/2022 21:38

I've seen so many pants (often thongs) and a good few bums of girls whose skirts are shorter than the bit where leg becomes bum. They are basically showing off their privates. I think they are sexualised and they spend most of the day trying to check their skirt has not blown up. Wearing skirts this short is oppression IMHO.

Carbiesdreamhouse · 14/03/2022 21:39

Maybe it should just be a blanket rule about not showing arse cheek

Snorkelface · 14/03/2022 21:46

When I at was at school they'd haul potential hemline offenders on to the stage during assembly and measure from knee to hemline with a ruler in front of the whole school (the rule at the time was no more than 2 inches above the knee). No rules on how tight they could be, we could barely walk.

Tonya345 · 14/03/2022 21:51

It's a sensible rule. Girls shouldn't be showing the top of their thighs, and in some cases, their bum cheeks, to passers by.
