Why does it irk me that school skirts must be a certain length?

My DDs school has a strict on the knee (or below) skirt length policy. It really pisses me off! I just don’t see it’s anyone’s issue what length a school skirt is?! I don’t think above the knee is an issue.

Or am I cross because I feel it’s othering girls. I’m not aware of a similar boys rule?

Plus, I have to be honest, I don't want to see anyone's privates (or verging on) whether that be middle aged man or teenage girl!
Sadly, it's only young yeen girls who feel 'empowered' aka pressurised into dressing this way. Uncomfortable, limiting and cold!

The rule is a protection.

CrabLegs · 14/03/2022 21:57

My dd came home today and said that they had had a fire alarm and they had been outside for forty minutes and she couldn't understand how a girl whose entire bottom was on display throughout could stand the cold.

It's madness. If they roll their skirt up more than one roll it starts to stick out. Especially at the back. It's like a bustle.

Controlling Hmm?! Oh dear god.

I get you OP, maybe it's the language around it and the fact there is usually only emphasis on managing what girls wear rather than managing how boys and men behave.

However, that being said, some of the skirts are insanely tiny, I've seen bum cheeks and knickers in my area. I would want a rule in place to ensure girls don't fall prey to peer pressure fashion but they also should not be sexualised.
Boys should not have low pants with boxers on display either or be walking around with hands down their pants on their penises which is another thing I see a lot in my local area.

Icecreamandapplepie · 14/03/2022 22:05

Why do you think it's a good thing to let girls who are influenced by social media to be allowed to walk round in what amounts to hot pants at school? And should they be allowed to carry that on in their future work places when they get a bit older?

Do you also think sweaty men walking around with no shirt and tiny shorts in summer is a good thing? Maybe in restaurants when youre trying to eat? Where does it stop?

Or are some societal rules and expectations a good thing maybe?

StripeyDeckchair · 14/03/2022 22:08

Have you seen how short they wear their skirts? Rules are definitely needed.

I'm always amazed at how few girls wear trousers to school - they're far more practical. my girls live in leggings or jeans outside school.

Ginger1982 · 14/03/2022 22:09

There are girls walking around where I live with bondage dress style skirts barely covering their bums over thin dernier tights. Ridiculously inappropriate for school.

echt · 14/03/2022 22:12

The pupils represent the school, so the school gets to make the rules.
The trick is never to say the skirt length is a modesty issue, just that it is a rule.
It's not othering, as boys who choose to wear a dress/skirt would be bound by the same rules.

icelolly12 · 14/03/2022 22:16

You think girls should be walking around with their arse hanging out?! If it was boys doing that I wouldn't be happy either. They're teenagers, it's basic modesty.

NurseBernard · 14/03/2022 22:21

@Cbes

I’m with you OP. It’s controlling.
Wearing a uniform at all is controlling, then.

If you don’t like it, you choose a different school.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 14/03/2022 22:31

It’s necessary unfortunately, because if there was no rule on skirt length, there would be even more competition about who could wear the shortest skirt.

I spent an unnecessarily long time ‘policing’ skirt lengths and requesting that parents ensure that skirts are a reasonable length. Quite frequently I received verbal abuse too.

As a PP said, if you feel it’s not necessary, choose a school that doesn’t have any expectation of skirt length.

Frlrlrubert · 14/03/2022 22:42

I think 'knee length' is quite sensible. Otherwise it becomes hard to police. Knees are knees, no ridiculous measuring required.

There has to be a line somewhere, or as others have said, it becomes a peer pressure short skirt competition.

I worked in a school with no rules on skirts and the girls wore stretch fabric tubes that were designed to just cover the cheeks. They spent the entire day walking round with their hands by their sides holding either side of their skirt so it didn't ride up any higher. Totally restricting. And when they didn't their arse was literally hanging out. I'm not one for policing girls bodies and the language around that, but it was actually 'distracting' for all involved for there to be arse cheeks on show.

I assume they have the option of trousers as well?

Icecreamandapplepie · 14/03/2022 22:43

Op??

Idkiibu · 14/03/2022 22:52

The skirts I’ve seen on girls are so short and barely cover anything. And yes, I do think a young girl (or anyone really) must not expose herself this way to others. I wouldn’t want it for my daughter and I wouldn’t go to work looking like that either. This requirement is fine by me.

Clarabe1 · 14/03/2022 23:00

God I wish our local high school would bring this rule in. Some of the girls skirts hardly cover their arses. Call me old fashioned but it’s indecent. Sounds a sensible rule to me.

Fridgeorflight · 14/03/2022 23:02

Seeing the crotch of tights hanging below the hem of a skirt isn't a good look.

Ilostit · 14/03/2022 23:03

Sorry I totally forgot I posted in a fit of rage! Just going to read the thread now!

eddiemairswife · 14/03/2022 23:06

Perhaps schools should make old-fashioned school knickers part of the uniform. That would keep the girls warm and well-covered.

Ilostit · 14/03/2022 23:08

Ok ok!! Yes I think there are rules for boys. The female deputy head is responsible for uniform and yes skirts must be on the knee (or just below).

Startingtomoveon · 14/03/2022 23:10

Yep, the girls at our local secondary definitely misinterpret the phrase “less is more.”

The most memorable was seeing an almost non-existent bandage skirt displaying butt cheeks and what was clearly a sanitary pad peeking out of knickers. Really not a great look sorry.

DesertStorms · 14/03/2022 23:11

I frequently see girls from the local school in these tube things that just cover their bottoms. I feel embarrassed loooking at them . You can be sure there are lots of men getting their rocks off ogling them. It’s completely inappropriate. I wouldn’t want my daughter wearing them and they are certainly not skirts. Leave nothing to the imagination at all. I don’t understand why schools don’t have rules anymore. Be grateful yours does.
Because all the girls do it the girls who feel uncomfortable dressed like this have to do it too or be a laughing stock.

Ilostit · 14/03/2022 23:15

School is very strict on uniform. Girls can wear trousers if they wish.

OP posts:
DesertStorms · 14/03/2022 23:18

Be grateful

Clarabe1 · 14/03/2022 23:19

I saw one amply built lass who had obviously applied the self tanner only for her already short school skirt to ride up and display the shining white moons of her lower arse cheeks. I had this terrible dilemma whether to approach her and then I thought how? How can you possibly approach a schoolgirl and have a conversation about her arse cheeks??? Poor kid.

Namenic · 14/03/2022 23:38

I don’t see why it is a problem. If boys want to wear the skirts, I’m sure they will have to follow the rules as well? You can’t walk around with your whole shirt unbuttoned. But maybe leaving off the top button is ok.
