My G&T season starts on 1st April so I'd be interested to know what's good and what's best avoided. My regular go-to is Tanqueray at 43% and it's usually discounted somewhere local. Are there any others of a similar style and price, apart from Beefeater and Morrison's Best ? I prefer a straightforward gin to those with additional flavourings and umpteen botanicals.

Thankyou.

Gin Mare is wonderful.

I love the hard April 1 start time-I got carried away and had one yesterday!!

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/03/2022 17:42

Aldi own brand is nice.

WildRosie · 14/03/2022 17:42

April to September, every year.

Daffy's is nice, as is Whitley Neill original (in the black bottle).

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/03/2022 17:52

If you know anyone going to Spain, Larios is cheap as chips and lovely. No flavourings, just bloody good gin.

hightimer · 14/03/2022 19:04

Waitrose own brand is hands down one of the best gins I've tried. And I've tried a lot of gins.

Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 19:07

My craft beer and gin bar recommended Malfy blood orange gin and I love the grapefruit ones.

Lidl or Aldi gins forget which - they’re good.

NellyDElephant · 14/03/2022 19:07

I’ll second the Larios - it’s ace, and can be bought on Amazon, if you aren’t going to Spain anytime soon!
Aldi’s own brand ‘Greyson’s’ is spot on for value and taste - no frills but it’s so much nicer than other own brand gins.

WellTidy · 14/03/2022 19:09

Adnams is really good, excellent value for the price.

My favourite gin ever is Monkey 47, but in the region of double the price.

If you like flavoured tins, I really like the Whitley Neil raspberry one (with lemonade and fresh raspberries) and the Tanquerey Sevilla is good, as is the sipsmith lemon drizzle one.

WildRosie · 14/03/2022 20:02

Thankyou all. I'm not going to Spain any time soon so I'll have to look elsewhere. I do have Aldi and Waitrose close at hand.

The good thing with Tanqueray is the alcoholic strength. 43% gives it a kick, an edge over 40% brands but not so much that you feel ill!

Pickering navy strength is good if you like a good kick from your gin. I almost also partial to Brockman's but that might be too fruity a flavour for you (it's not a fruit-flavoured gin as such but does have berries amongst the botanicals.) The Ginventory app is good for checking out any you've seen or heard of but not sure how they taste.

Shortbreadselection · 14/03/2022 20:13

I've tried lots but always come back to Gordon's - fresh and crisp.

Kitkat151 · 14/03/2022 20:18

Lidl Hortus....they do a classic and also flavoured....very reasonable and very good
Also traditional Scottish batch gin...sold at Aldi....good price for an excellent product
I do like a pink Gordon’s though😀

stuffnthings · 14/03/2022 20:25

I love Plymouth Gin as my go to. I went on a gin tour of Plymouth Gin, it was excellent and very interesting to learn what goes on in the industry; particularly the growth of 'craft' gin and some of the realities.

We did a blind taste test of 8 gins, and it's remarkable which were which. It is also very interesting the impact the mixer has on the gin. I'm a big gin lover and the visit completely changed my outlook.

I would always choose a London gin now, which has strict requirements. A lot of makers use a base spirit, which is only produced in the UK by a few producers, apparently the smaller makers buy it in and then do their bit with a secondary process of adding botanicals etc.

redambergreengo · 14/03/2022 20:31

Try Kilty Gin. Small batch. Small business. Beautiful pure crisp and clean tasting.

hennaoj · 14/03/2022 20:31

My Dad likes Tanquery and Hendricks, so you could try Hendricks.
I rather like Tarquins sea dog, Afallon Mon, Makar, Trevethan, Harris and Botantist.

SiobhanSharpe · 14/03/2022 20:46

Tanqueray no.10 is over 47% ABV! But it's definitely not cheap.

I'm a beefeater gal myself, I like a 'juniper forward' gin.
I've been unimpressed by any of the new flavoured gins that I've tried, especially if they're sweetened.
But then I like the old-fashioned classic 'pink' gin, made with gin, ice and a drop (no more) of Angostura bitters.
Traditionally you're supposed to pour a few drops of the Angostura into the class, swirl it round and pour it out. But I like a bit to stay in the glass. (sorry if I'm teaching any grandmas how to suck eggs. Blush )

Gordon's pink and lemon gins should be fired directly into the sun. Fucking awful stuff.

Their original green is superb and very underrated.

Yes to PP who mentioned mixers. You can have the finest gin in the world but if you mix it with piss like Schweppes then you might as well bin it. Fever Tree is very good.

Margo34 · 14/03/2022 20:54

Hendricks

Downton57 · 14/03/2022 20:55

Eden Mill gin is good and so is Harris Gin. Mix with Fever Tree tonic.

cherrypiepie · 14/03/2022 20:55

I have a 12 month gin season Grin

As a day to day drink I prefer tanquery export strength (43% one). However I also like Bombay and Gordon's.

Also like monkey 47 and have a bottle it's lovely but pricey.

Newest surprise was Aldi Haysmith very nice.

BIWI · 14/03/2022 20:56

My current favourite is an Aldi gin - Haysmith's Oriental Spiced. It's much, much more subtle than Ophir, which is like drinking liquid curry!

PeterPomegranate · 14/03/2022 20:56

Agree. It’s nice.

I think the M&S own brand is drinkable too.

poshme · 14/03/2022 20:59

Tesco melodist is nice.
