I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

Errrrm... what are capers? (asking for a friend Grin)

DeathByMascara · 13/03/2022 22:05

Apologies!!! That last comment was in response to the post regarding pole dancing and friction burns!

It hurts like a bitch. Great fun though.

namechangeforthisone22 · 13/03/2022 22:07

@doodlejump1980

I was 35 when I found out that capers are not tiny fish. 35.
Wait, what are they then? Hmm
dementedpixie · 13/03/2022 22:07

Capers are immature flower buds
Are people confusing them with anchovies

I haven't just learned this but did you know that Guterman thread reels open up at one end to store needles?
Wow I am going to check this in the morning

@meow1989

I learnt in recent weeks that if you put a mug with a metallic handle in the microwave to reheat your coffee, then pick it up by said handle, you will burn through several layers of skin on your fingers in places you will recurrently catch/rub on things whilst undertaking every day tasks. I swear I heard a sizzle when I did it Sad
I did this too but with an earthware cup, lost a lot of finger
MayMorris · 13/03/2022 22:24

@AnchorWHAT

1. That split peas cooked in a pressure cooker take a lot less time than i thought to cook
  1. That overfilling a pressure cooker can cause it to malfunction
  2. That wearing split peas is not a great look
  3. That cleaning split peas off the ceiling -and every other bastard surface in a kitchen- is bloody hard work
🤣🤣😱

@Hillbillyhotel

I learned last week that ladybirds aren’t pee’ing on you. They’re bleeding from their feet because they’re so terrified. That scarred me in a way that the This Little Piggy fact just has!
That’s so sad 😢😢😢
Rubyflint · 13/03/2022 22:34

I had the same with a wooden chopping board. I assume the glue melted?

Recently I was trying to save time and microwaved a bowl of tinned potatoes. Big mistake. There was a mighty bang as the potatoes exploded all over the inside of the microwave.

LoveMyPiano · 13/03/2022 22:35

A map of the world will have the country it is produced in/for in the centre. It is not GMT or date line oriented. I was watching some US film and someone had a map on the world, and the theory was proved correct....

shouldhestay · 13/03/2022 22:35

@Flexitarian WHATT?? 🤯

@KitKattaktik

Cheap glasses bounce off a tiled floor. The heirloom glass your grandmother gave you?

Shatters on impact. Sad

Definitely true of lovely glasses Sad but bone china stands a better chance of surviving than pottery or stoneware.

I do put wooden spoons in the dishwasher as I think they are cheap enough to replace.

I also didn't know Portsmouth was an island until I read this thread.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/03/2022 22:36

That if you don't bring your laundry in off the line overnight, spiders will rub their dicks on it.

LoveMyPiano · 13/03/2022 22:38

Another potentially traumatising one: The smell of cut grass is the grass screaming for help.

Pumpernickelsoup · 13/03/2022 22:40

@Hillbillyhotel @VioletOcean I feel so sad for them!

Pumpernickelsoup · 13/03/2022 22:41

@NewYearEveryYear I am amazed at this! I thought they were so far from each other too!

I am an experienced sewer and make clothes as well as household things.

I did not know this. It’s witchcraft!

I am 50.

Pumpernickelsoup · 13/03/2022 22:44

@LoveMyPiano plants actually do scream, when they are thirsty, when they are not cared for properly and when they are cut! They also make noises when they’ve been watered.
My 15 year old son thought I was mad when he asked what the popping noise was in the lounge a few nights ago and I told him that it was the big corner plant making noises as it’d just had a drink!

hilariousnamehere · 13/03/2022 22:44

@Appalonia

That you can't turn wine into Prosecco using a sodastream! Left a very sticky kitchen when it exploded everywhere...
You can with a Drinkmate though! I got one for my birthday this year after much research as to which one could make anything fizzy vs which one was going to give me more cleaning 😂😂
pawpaws2022 · 13/03/2022 22:45

That even when you've been stabbing avocado stones for years, a knife will still slip, go through your hand and be stopped by a bone
Also hitting the bone really bloody hurts

Such a good idea though, shame it didn't work!

That a tromboleze is not a word, nor, a tiny trombone.
And the song goes "My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs" Grin

Courtesy of the misheard lyrics thread the other day!!!!!

Yes - it does not surprise me - and is why all of my plants are overgrown, which is neglectful in itself Sad
Hearing one have a drink though - that's next level creepy!
I do believe though that watchingthem recover from lack of watering is marvellous - and also a good lesson in why we should hydrate ouselves more Grin
I am sure there has been a Tales of the Unexpected or Hammer House of Horror type episode with such a theme. Certainly a Stephen King short story
