I am really in need of something new and interesting in my life, but have disappeared so far up my bum with post lockdown boredom/small life syndrome that I don't know where to start or what to do! Has anyone taken up something new lately? I'd love to know about what inspires/excites others!

I have taken up art. Drawing and painting. I’ve been doing it for a year. At the age of 59 I thought it’s what I’m most useless at, I’ll try to learn.

Learning to play piano after twenty odd years break away from it. Something I am really enjoying.

I am exceptionally dull. My favourite thing to do right now is watch you tube films about family meals and meal planning around the world. Best ones are some very good UK ones, French ones and Mediterranean ones. It does give me some greta ideas though and I did recently start a food blog.

I think it might be easier to ask yourself what sort of things you enjoy, and then look at related hobbies.

Do you enjoy being outdoors? Delicate work with your hands? Are you creative, or do you prefer to follow a defined set of rules? Do you enjoy physical activity, or something more cerebral?

My main hobby is alpine/winter climbing. It's not for everyone (massive understatement), but I love it. The feeling of freedom, the physical movement, the views, and being in control in dangerous technical terrain.

I do photography mainly but occasionally lose my way with it, like now when the weather's been crap and I have a lot of work on.

I have recently been learning how to do fancy lettering because there is a special birthday coming up and I want to make a card for them rather than just buying one.

I go to a weekly dance class, a weekly yoga class, a monthly book club, and a monthly feminist type event. I'm also part of my local amateur drama group, I go to the gym four mornings a week, I'm teaching myself to play piano again, and I attend roller derby games.

DP (also a woman) goes rock climbing, plays football weekly, weight trains, and occasionally goes to science conferences. She also makes youtube videos and does nature photography.

Lampface · 12/03/2022 20:32

Oh yes, and we hike.

Ladies choir & theatre company, both involve events snd visits to nursing homes etc, yoga and walking in the countryside with DH. Love my garden too and hope to sell plants for charity later in the year.

@FreezyFreezy that is beautiful! Where did you start?

inheritancetrack · 12/03/2022 20:54

ice skating. I love it

tinkywinkyshandbag · 12/03/2022 20:55

I'm doing a property development course, it's very challenging mentally but im enjoying it. No time for hobbies!

Divebar2021 · 12/03/2022 21:01

I do the gym as a necessity but don’t consider it a hobby as such.

I enjoy art and go to exhibitions whenever I can. My last exhibition was Franco Bacon at the RA. I piddle around with my own art and have started an art journal and travel journal. I have a reading challenge for the year and attend a monthly reading group. I have PenPal’s and write snail mail letters to them. I collect vintage memorabilia like old postcards that I send in my letters although I hope to use some in my art when I’m a bit more accomplished. I like dance and go when I can - I’ve just been to a contemporary ballet this week at Sadlers Wells this week and am taking DD to the Ballet Boyz in a couple of weeks. Im also a “thrifter” and enjoy scouring charity shops / vintage etc for bargains. If I had a flea market nearby I’d be a regular.

Can’t wait til I can retire.

Divebar2021 · 12/03/2022 21:02

Oooh Francis Bacon not Franco.

PKinOldAge · 12/03/2022 21:02

I do parkour! It's brilliant, challenging and knackering but I love it. I also like to get up a hill when the weather gets more spring-like and I want 5o give skateboarding a go again (haven't skated since I was about 13).

Years ago I did an evening class in Japanese, maybe learn a language op...I'd like to learn BSL but can't commit the time right now.

CatBed22 · 12/03/2022 21:14

Download the Pinterest app, create a few boards on there under things you like. E.g. cakes, gardening, watercolour painting, poetry, medieval costumes, whatever you like....its a virtual scrapbook where you click on the pictures you like and collect them.

You can then read some of the articles they're from online and get ideas for mini projects.

If I didn't have a child I'd go down the route of upcycling probably.

But I do sewing, gardening, reading, keep a fishtank....

These are some of my Pinterest boards

Thank you. I bought a quill for a photo idea and had a go at using it. I then bought a fountain pen and developed a bit of a fountain pen habit 😂 and bought one with a soft nib after reading and watching YouTube videos on calligraphy.

Mine is still wonky with not quite uniform letters but I am still getting the hang of it!

ApricotArcade · 12/03/2022 21:31

Art history course at local college, swimming & walking (while plugged into Audible). Keeping in touch with friends, feeding and getting to know wildlife in my garden (birds and hedgehogs).

HFG37 · 13/03/2022 09:20

Oh thanks everyone, thats fab!! I went to bed without checking for replies so a lovely surprise to wake up to these ideas. I shall be mulling them all over x
