Help decipher writing old baptism certificate

SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 15:08

If any super sleuths can help I’d be very grateful.

This baptism certificate is from an old, old biscuit tin that used to live in my Great-Granny’s house.

We don’t know much about her (Great Granny’s) family history/ ancestry and are trying to piece together some information from this tin of old photos and papers.

Can anyone read the name of the child being baptised??

Yup! I agree with everyone else. Minnie McCauley Burns.
I have also found her details on the birth register and her parents (William and Agnes)'s marriage certificate.

I am amazed at how much you have come up with , thank you so much.
My mum has just remembered that her cousin Billy had an Aunt Minnie so Minnie it is!
We will follow some links and try and find some more connections and family links. Thanks everyone 💐

"NannyR

civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp might be some help at working it out. I've not used northern Irish records before but with English ones if you have the mothers name and the date of birth you can work out the babys name, I presume it would work the same on this site. I think the parents are William and Agnes Burns or Barns.

You have to pay for GRONI. The site people is free and has all records for all Ireland up until partition in 1921

this site

I spent a small fortune in GRONI before I found it. "

Ah, I was looking for a free site, I use FreeBMD for English records and didn't know if there was anything similar for Northern Ireland.

Minnie is correct. Birth record attached. The website states McCanley as Mother's maiden name, but this could be wrong.

You will note they lived at 32 Woodstock Road when Minnie was born and at number 45 when she was baptised.

Actually there is what could be a dot for the first ‘i’ in Minnie, written on the capital M. Minnie was my first guess but I couldn’t see a dot so went with Marnie.

Oh, reading back looks like others have already solved it; well done!

It does, and it is wrong if you check the parents marriage certificate the mothers maiden name is definitely McCauley

Oh how lovely @SophiesMummySaid you’ve learnt a new little snippet about your family history! 🌷

DownNative · 12/03/2022 16:04

@Justyouwaitandseeagain aye, looks dead on McCauley to me anyway.

DoraSpenlow · 12/03/2022 16:10

I have found a Minnie McCauley Burns born in Belfast in 1920. Emigrated to Australia in 1933. (Her mother died in 1928). Married a Donal Spani in Freemantle in 1942 and sadly died aged 45 in 1966.

She was only 13 at the time she went to Australia and she was listed as a student on the ship's manfest and it does not appear that her parents were on the ship. Strange.

It might have been an “Oranges & Sunshine” scenario, sadly.
SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 16:17

Wow thanks @DoraSpenlow
Her Dad married 4 times!
Mum’s memory is failing but that triggered something about a group of the family who were Ranchers in Australia who emigrated after a family death.

Minnie is my great grandad’s , brother’s daughter- not sure what relation that is to me…

Thoosa · 12/03/2022 16:24

So your grandparent’s first cousin. Therefore your first cousin twice removed.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 12/03/2022 16:24

Seems strange that your nan would have a copy of her baptism certificate? Were there other records in the tin or just this one?

doyouwantachuffedybadge · 12/03/2022 16:28

That's a capital A at the beginning of the first name. I know a few old Irish people that write their capital A's as a large lower case a.

SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 16:28

There’s all sorts in the tin, we are slowly working through it

oh just read the replies to your post - nevermind...

Rosylarose · 12/03/2022 16:38

It's Minnie McCauley Burns. Her birth was registered in Belfast in the first quarter of 1920. I can see a fair bit about her on Ancestry, including a photo.

SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 16:42

Ahh can you share the photo @Rosylarose?

LIZS · 12/03/2022 16:45

Minnie - we had it used in our family in 1870s and 1909. Parents William James and Agnes Burns

DownNative · 12/03/2022 16:46
