Help decipher writing old baptism certificate

SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 15:08

If any super sleuths can help I’d be very grateful.

This baptism certificate is from an old, old biscuit tin that used to live in my Great-Granny’s house.

We don’t know much about her (Great Granny’s) family history/ ancestry and are trying to piece together some information from this tin of old photos and papers.

Can anyone read the name of the child being baptised??

I thought Merril too. McCauley is the middle name.
Burns is the surname.
The address is my Great Gran’s childhood home but we don’t know who they are.
Burns was her maiden name.

I vote Maurice McCauley, but some of the letters are poorly formed.

SophiesMummySaid · 12/03/2022 15:26

William Burns is the father

Could the first name be Margaret ?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/03/2022 15:27

Why do people think Minnie is a pet name and unlikely to be the actual name? There were hundreds of Minnies registered in England and Wales in 1920.

CremeEggThief · 12/03/2022 15:27

Possibly Murrie.

Justkeeppedaling · 12/03/2022 15:28

Is it definitely a girl baby? The cert doesn't say

An Agnes McCauley married a William James Burns in Belfast in 1918, according to Ancestry. Seems likely to be them.

chesirecat99 · 12/03/2022 15:33

Can you zoom in on the other sections too? It might help to compare the letters to the letters in other words that are more legible.

PetuniaButterworth · 12/03/2022 15:35

Attached is the street record for 1918 and Minnie's official birth record. I think it's McCauley but will check if her parents marriage certificate is any clearer as I think her middle name is her mums maiden name.

Minnie McCauley Burns

NannyR · 12/03/2022 15:38

this site might be some help at working it out. I've not used northern Irish records before but with English ones if you have the mothers name and the date of birth you can work out the babys name, I presume it would work the same on this site. I think the parents are William and Agnes Burns or Barns.

HadEnoughOfBears · 12/03/2022 15:40

@wizzler

Merrill
I also think it's Merrill or Merril
PetuniaButterworth · 12/03/2022 15:40

It is McCauley.her parents marriage certificate is the third record down. It was quite common in Ulster to give your children the mother's maiden names as first or middle name.

Minnie McCauly surname Burns, parents William James and Agnes.
He is an apprentice riveter.

Look and see what letters match similar shapes in the words that you can read. Pattern recognition often gives good clues.

The capital 'C' in McCauly is the same as the capital 'C' in the name of the registrar at the bottom f the page.
The 'a' in the same name is similar to the 'a' in 'James'
The 'u' in the same name is similar to the 'u' in Burns.

(the spelling fits with Northern Irish pronounciation

cheapskatemum · 12/03/2022 15:43

My brother has McCaulay as one of his middle names, as it's a family name (our Dad's mother's maiden name). I think this looks like Marnie. The dot for the i is at the end, there's no dot for the second letter.

You have to pay for GRONI. The site people is free and has all records for all Ireland up until partition in 1921

civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

I spent a small fortune in GRONI before I found it.

Looks like it could be Minnie McCauly. Variation of surname would be McCauley.

Couldn't find any record of this online and it's quite rare to get one from 1920, I believe. So, that's a great find.

Believe Burns is a Protestant originated name. They'll be either Presbyterian or Methodist in all likelihood.

BusinessMindThoughts · 12/03/2022 15:50

First name could be Florence or Horace

8lue8ird · 12/03/2022 15:51

Marrie?
