Should we go to a and e?

Dp has been feeling rubbish for a week now, with pain caused by constipation. He hasnt had a bowel movement for a week now. The pain is constant, with waves of agonising pain.

Hes struggling to be able to medicate it, as hes not allowed to have anti inflammatory medication for seperate issues, and is wary about codeine based medicine as that causes constipation. Paracetomol isnt touching the sides of the pain.

The plan was to get a doctor appointment on monday, but the pain was really severe last night, im not sure we should wait till monday. He mentioned yesterday that the blockage is starting to affect his ability to pee properly which i think is worrying?

Hes alsp worrying now that the constipation is a side effect of something more serious, as theres nothing we can think thats triggered it. Hes worried about gallstones, or bowel cancer.

Is it worth going to a and e, are they likely going to he able to do anything, even if its just investigate and rule out some of the more scary possibilities thats worrying dp? Or would we likely be waiting ages and then sent away with a box of laxido?

Morning! So it hasn't resolved overnight, but dp has been up and down a lot and says what he is passing is more substantial now, but still no sign of whatever has been causing the blockage. Discomfort has ramped up slightly but taking that as a good sign that things are moving. Have the hospital appointment today at 9am so will ask about glycerin suppositories then, and swing by boots on the way home to get some.

And to the pp that asked, no dp doesnt know that im posting about this... Blush feel a bit bad about that but its not like i can tell anyone in real life this detail, and the support from here is whts giving me the energy to support him, so its sort of for his own good...? The advice and people talking from experience stops me from getting too anxious about any symptoms etc.

Fingers crossed for continued improvements today!

I’m glad things are moving in the right direction (no pun intended!) and hope he gets some good answers today.

One of my DC has bowel issues and takes Laxido:movicol daily. Our consultant said for disimpaction you need to be taking enough movicol to be passing ‘rusty water’. With disimpaction we build up to 8 sachets a day before going back down again.

Agree with the squatting. Or putting his legs up on a step so his knees are up.

I hope he has a big movement today. I hope nothing worse is picked up at the hospital.

sillysmiles · 13/03/2022 07:51

As others have mentioned-squatting! Can he bring a small foot stool or something into the loo to raise his feet up so he's in a better position.

thanks for updating op, best of luck today

cptartapp · 13/03/2022 07:54

Following and wishing good luck

My friend had a very compacted bowel, in the end she put a bucket in the bath she sat on the edge and held the shower head with warm water aimed at the area in question. It relaxes the muscles and presto! Did take lots of laxatives and a bit of a mess but who cares. Hope that helps

Hope everything goes ok today OP. 🤞

Laney39 · 13/03/2022 08:05

My ds was on movical daily but it tool at least a week to work. While waiting or if he got really bad he used suppositories which always worked really quickly. The thing that helped the most once he cleared the blockage was linseed or flax seeds in his breakfast or yogurt everyday with lots of fluid after and now hardly has any trouble and no medication. Good luck it's horrible to watch people suffering.

R0tational · 13/03/2022 08:07

Wishing you and DP well OP! Sounds awful

polkadotpjs · 13/03/2022 08:15

Overly invested here too. I still remember the agony of post partum poo

ChatterMonkey · 13/03/2022 08:24

Thank you to those who have mentioned its difficult for me too, what doesnt help is I have a physical reaction to stress thats the opposite to dps bowel issue... So ill get the urge to go and i need to go right that minute. Tied with dps issue and the fact we only have one bathroom, its a bit awkward, but getting by haha.

Getting ready for the hospital now, hope its a quick visit...

Make sure he mentions feeling fluey in case it is the early signs of sepsis X

I was just checking in to see how your DP is, hope all goes well today OP!

Rainydaize · 13/03/2022 08:36

So invested in this thread! Also came along to check in with how things had gone overnight. Hope you get some answers today.

katepilar · 13/03/2022 08:49

Hope it goes all well at the hospital and your DP gets ok soon and you can relax. Its very distressing when life shrinks to a health problem.
Have you got some strategies how to cope with your own stress levels?

WaterBottle123 · 13/03/2022 08:52

Best wishes OP. This is likely something that will resolve but you must push for answers and resolution.

ChatterMonkey · 13/03/2022 09:07

@katepilar my main strategy is having some proper 'me' time as downtime. Which i am still managing to prioritise when I can, and dp is firm that I need to as well. So for example yesterday I napped most od the afternoon, dp was feeling ok-ish and was settled himself, but when i dosed off he gor me a blanket and made a hot water bottle for me. Also he came with me when I had to go to the supermarket for some bits and pieces, he waited in the car but came with me for the journey as he didnt want me to be feeling ok my own doing all the work keeping things together. Hes rather good at supporting me supporting him, and is appreciative of the effort which helps as well.

Sitting in the car outside the hospital, but bought myself cosmo magazine as a little treat to read in the car. Dp was saying I should just go home but ill hang around for a bit and head home when i get bored.

Will bloods show if things are progressing in the right direction in regards to the blockage? Dp has just messaged saying thats what it sounds like they are looking for, as if they can tell if its moving and just needs time, or if it needs more intervention. Would they be able to tell that from bloods? He also mentioned the fluey symptoms so they are keeping am eye put for that as well. Had to be firm with dp to mention the fluey feeling to them, he wasnt going to in case they just would treat him like a covid risk, but told him firmly without trying to scare him it was very important to mention as could mean something pretty serious.

Will be about an hour until they can get the bloods back

LIZS · 13/03/2022 09:12

Sorry you can't go in again. Has he asked them for you to accompany him? Have they not scanned or xrayed his abdomen to see what is where?

ChatterMonkey · 13/03/2022 09:22

I dont think theyve scanned or x rayed, but they did a very thorough physical examination so i guess theyve been able to confirm or rule out possibilities from that, along with the bloods. Its difficult to suggest these things to dp, he already hates hospitals and his experience of not being believed previously has tainted his opinion. So if i suggest that they should have done a scan, he'll think theyve totally fobbed him off and not done a proper job, when it does sound like theyve been taking it seriously.

He mentioned yessterday that other people had someone in with him, and grumbled that he was the only one not allowed anyone in, but then mentioned that the people with someone with them were elderly. Atm i think dp is advocating for himself ok, so will wait outside but stay nearby. If that changes ill push for more explanation if what they have examined and ruled out.

starfishmummy · 13/03/2022 09:33

Maybe get him something like anusol cream to soothe the soreness??

Im2022 · 13/03/2022 10:07

Glad things are moving along. I think the “newer” poo comes out easier, as it’s soft. So the old poo that’s backed up will be harder and may take a bit more softening to move it out.

Hope they find the root cause of it today.🤞

AnnaMagnani · 13/03/2022 10:10

Is he actually passing anything from his back passage? Wind, liquid, anything at all?

If he is just very very constipated, the Laxido at high doses may just dissolve everything so if he is waiting to pass 'a blockage' he might not! He'll just get going again with runny poo, or runny poo with lumps in so it'll be a case of winding down the Laxido until he gets back to a normal poo.

Fingers crossed for him today.
