Should we go to a and e?

Dp has been feeling rubbish for a week now, with pain caused by constipation. He hasnt had a bowel movement for a week now. The pain is constant, with waves of agonising pain.

Hes struggling to be able to medicate it, as hes not allowed to have anti inflammatory medication for seperate issues, and is wary about codeine based medicine as that causes constipation. Paracetomol isnt touching the sides of the pain.

The plan was to get a doctor appointment on monday, but the pain was really severe last night, im not sure we should wait till monday. He mentioned yesterday that the blockage is starting to affect his ability to pee properly which i think is worrying?

Hes alsp worrying now that the constipation is a side effect of something more serious, as theres nothing we can think thats triggered it. Hes worried about gallstones, or bowel cancer.

Is it worth going to a and e, are they likely going to he able to do anything, even if its just investigate and rule out some of the more scary possibilities thats worrying dp? Or would we likely be waiting ages and then sent away with a box of laxido?

Chronic sufferer here (after 4 kids and prolapses) I have to use a suppository daily (prescribed) and manevac granules daily. Laxido if the above don't work. Glycerine supps are great.. easy to use, and quick to help shift a hard blockage.
DS2 has UC and when he gets a blockage he can go up to 16 (!) sachets of laxido, so if in doubt take more ..with lots of water.

Hope your dh is 'going' soon!

I was diagnosed with a slow bowel after these episodes and hospital admissions. Told to use prunes daily and lactulose and fresenuis + Really worked daily

PatterPaws · 12/03/2022 22:54

Hope he feels better soon

I agree about the buscopan not being great - it stops the pain by stopping bowel spasm, and I am guessing that any movement is good movement at the moment even though it is uncomfortable.

I used this (prescribed) for IBS and it slowed my bladder down to the point where the stagnant urine caused an infection.

ThePrincessSleptFor100Years · 12/03/2022 23:04

I’m overly invested in this 🙊 hope he’s ok OP

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2022 23:10

Just popping on to say what a day you've both had OP! You sound lovely and supportive, I hope he's much better very soon

justasking111 · 12/03/2022 23:11

Wishing you both the best.

Seemssounfair · 12/03/2022 23:52

Have you picked names for it yet? 🤣

Hope things start moving soon.

tillylula · 12/03/2022 23:57

Hope your husband is feeling better soon. When I was a teenager I once didn't poo for 4 weeks. It was horrendous. It must be really worrying seeing him in pain!

Sirzy · 13/03/2022 00:24

Does he realise how many people are watching for his bowel movement ?

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2022 00:28

I hope he is more comfortable soon, and that there is no other issue.

JuteWeaver · 13/03/2022 00:51

This has happened to me a few times. I called 111 the first time and was told to go to A & E as it was getting hard to pee. I was (eventually) given a suppository and the situation was 'relieved' within 15 minutes. Not a pleasant experience but I was so pleased it was over.
Next time i used a suppository at home to sort it, after trying Laxido unsuccessfully.
Now I keep a pack in the house and a close eye on how often I go. I take lots of pain medications and this is a scary side effect for me.
Hope your husband will feel better very soon, OP.

RainbowLollipop · 13/03/2022 00:58

Has he pooped? We need an update. Hoping he's feeling loads better

Chichimcgee · 13/03/2022 01:45

I really don’t like ‘it’s only constipation’ my son was hospitalised as his bowel was ready to rupture and my mum had surgery as she had a blockage. I really hope he gets some answers and is ok

oakleaffy · 13/03/2022 02:39

@Sirzy

Does he realise how many people are watching for his bowel movement ?
It's probably going to hurt when that mass starts moving South.

Can poo get so impacted that it's too large to actually pass?

WhackingPhoenix · 13/03/2022 02:56

OP, get him some glycerin suppositories because when that comes out it’s going to HURT.

TwoAndCooPlease · 13/03/2022 03:11

Hey op! Recurring sufferer of constipation here. I've just been to the toilet first time in 9 days.

TwoAndCooPlease · 13/03/2022 03:13

Omg I pressed too soon fs...

Hope your DP feels better soon! The flu like symptoms (sweat/no temp) are normal for me and usually it's about 6 hours later I'll have a bowel movement. Here's hoping!!

Joystir59 · 13/03/2022 04:15

I hope he gets some relief very soon

Nat6999 · 13/03/2022 05:01

I was horrifically bunged up when I was 20 weeks pregnant, I hadn't been for 9 days, it took 12 sachets of Laxido, 4 doses of lactulose & half a gallon of strong black coffee with loads of brown sugar in it. I ended up putting a film on my laptop & having dh keep bringing me mugs of coffee while I sat on the toilet, also using a very soapy hot flannel round my bum hole (I binned the flannel) after 4 hours it started & kept on coming in waves over the space of 3 hours, I felt it was good practice for giving birth. I was shattered afterwards & ended up going to bed for the rest of the day.

SonicBroom · 13/03/2022 05:10

Really hope he’s ok OP, it sounds awful. Did they not take an X-ray in hospital? That can show them lots very quickly as well, including whether there is a blockage or not. Perhaps worth asking for as they can be done outside hospital too via GP referral

AnxiousMum875 · 13/03/2022 06:29

I am so invested in you DP and his vowel movements moving forward! I really hope he's OK as it sounds horrific, but do let us know how he gets on.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 13/03/2022 06:45

I would. I was badly constipated when pregnant (10 days I didn't 'go'!) and the pain was worse than labour Sad

EnjoyingTheSilence · 13/03/2022 07:14

I can’t take codine because it makes me constipated. A few years ago, broke a bone and I swear the trapped wind and constipation was worse than the bone break!

Hope your DH is ok

Magnesium is good for muscle relaxation and therefore certain types of pain. Add epsom salts to the bath if you have any. Taken orally it is also laxative.
