Should we go to a and e?

Dp has been feeling rubbish for a week now, with pain caused by constipation. He hasnt had a bowel movement for a week now. The pain is constant, with waves of agonising pain.

Hes struggling to be able to medicate it, as hes not allowed to have anti inflammatory medication for seperate issues, and is wary about codeine based medicine as that causes constipation. Paracetomol isnt touching the sides of the pain.

The plan was to get a doctor appointment on monday, but the pain was really severe last night, im not sure we should wait till monday. He mentioned yesterday that the blockage is starting to affect his ability to pee properly which i think is worrying?

Hes alsp worrying now that the constipation is a side effect of something more serious, as theres nothing we can think thats triggered it. Hes worried about gallstones, or bowel cancer.

Is it worth going to a and e, are they likely going to he able to do anything, even if its just investigate and rule out some of the more scary possibilities thats worrying dp? Or would we likely be waiting ages and then sent away with a box of laxido?

[quote ThumbWitchesAbroad]Haha, yes, it went just how you imagine it.
"Cancel the cheque" became the new catchphrase for a long time, and is still in use!
It was a grabby bride and groom who had told the OP that her wedding cheque gift wasn't for enough, and that she should pay more - here, I found it for you!

Good grief!Confused
Thanks for finding it for me.

Just wanted to update how dp's appointment went today, bloods crp is coming back down so theyve decided not to give antibiotics (crp was 35 on saturday, 88 on sunday, and down to 25 today)

Doctor today was really helpful, went through with dp what he needed to do to manage this. Explained that codeine/morphine could be used along with the laxido to prevent the pain when needing to go. He said that the potential to restrict food because of discomfort when needing to go to the toilet would be worse than taking the codeine, and the focus just now is to get the bowels working again. Also need to have soft bland foods regularly, basically the priority now is to build back up to normal eating slowly.

Also needs to go back in for a colonoscopy in 6-8 weeks, so i guess this is to confirm the diagnosis and make sure everything is healing ok?

I am glad to hear his bloods are back on a better level.
It sounds like are metaphorically if not physically moving in the right direction.

I hope things keep going well for him .

Glad to hear he's improving and has a treatment plan - excellent that he has avoided the antibiotics.

Thanks for the up date, I was wondering how your dh was doing, I'm far too involved with his bowels.Grin

I'm pleased to hear that things are going in the correct direction, hope it all settles down quickly.

Did they talk to you about soluble fibre, @ChatterMonkey? He does need that, but not bran (insoluble fibre).
Here's a link for you www.healthline.com/health/soluble-vs-insoluble-fiber
I have to say, I won't be surprised if they didn't - doctors are not generally well trained in nutrition!

Mumdiva99 · 16/03/2022 06:45

Hopefully it will rarely flare up so that he won't need the morphine. Take care both of you.

as someone who suffers from severe gastric pain due to no movement of gas, I would recommend a few things. Massage the stomach with olive oil, like you massage a child's belly, get's the things moving and moves the blockage as well. For constipation I have tired carom seeds, carom seeds tea, castor oil. Surprisingly putting castor/olive oil on the belly button and warming the stomach with a hot water bottle also help.

bultaoreune · 21/03/2022 22:33

although, I should have added a disclaimer, that these should be taken after speaking to your doctor. I mostly use home remedies but it might not be for everyone.
