Help me sort out my deep kitchen drawers please!

Moved into a new bungalow 4 yrs ago. I love our big open plan kitchen but I have 2 of those deep drawers that are a mess and I don’t know how to organise them, it makes me sigh every time I open them!
I tried to get creative a divided up a cutlery tray for all the utensils but they just end up all over the show - and how do I store the rolls of foil, paper and bloody silicone bags? Heeelp 😩

The deep drawers are pan drawers so I'd say you are using them wrong (possibly not the answer you were looking for).

Can you have a sort out of what you need (there's loads in them- how much do you use all of it) and find a different home for it all?

Sunnysidegold · 12/03/2022 06:57

I have two of these deep drawers and use one for saucepans and one for plates? It's really easy getting stuff out when they're stacked. Could you shuffle cupboards and do that?

If not an option, I would see if I could fit a pot in for utensils? Could you put three deeper baskets in and corral the bigger items? With a space along the front for the foil and cling film etc?

Maybe a declutter is needed too? I only have one whisk,do you really need two?

I'd lift it all out and see what you can get rid of. You could stack smaller tubs for cookie cutters and little things.

I saw someone had put sticky hooks inside their cupboard door for the individual measuring spoons and cups so they're easily accessed.

Have you any shallower drawers? I have cling and stuff in those so they're easy to get to along with stuff I use everyday.

My kitchen drawers are only vaguely organised, maybe look up kitchen drawer storage on tiktok or Pinterest?

Sunnysidegold · 12/03/2022 06:58

It's very early for me, I don't mean to sound so condescending with my "do you really need two whisks?" Grin

Get a bottle rack thing for the cling film etc and stand it on its end.
Agree that the deep drawers are meant for pans. Can you shuffle things around? What other storage do you have?

Newnormal99 · 12/03/2022 07:11

I have one deep drawer with pans and the other one sits under the cutlery drawer so not quite as high as it would be otherwise. I have the white plastic tubs from ikea to help hold stuff in their. I have about 4/5 of them and put my utensils etc in them.

To the pp....just realised I have 4 whisks......tbf I prob don't need 4 but I would say 2 is definitely acceptable for small / large saucepans.

CrustyCrackers · 12/03/2022 08:12

They look fine to me Grin

Louyoga · 12/03/2022 08:18

@NeilBuchananisBanksy yes I know they’re pan drawers but we have very little storage so I put my pans on this a- frame thing with other bits that look ok on display so I have room in the drawers for all the stuff I want to hide!
@Sunnysidegold you’re not condescending at all and thanks for your suggestions - I’m a chef by trade hence all the whisks, so is my husband but I may surreptitiously donate one or two to charity. I only have one other drawer for cutlery so no space there. TikTok I’m new to but I’ll definitely check it out thanks!
@Instawhat not sure what you mean by a bottle rack thing, can you elaborate? 🤔

Can you use the deep drawers for pantry storage? Using tall jars to store all your dry goods? And perhaps the second drawer for crockery that you can stack

SoupDragon · 12/03/2022 08:35

IKEA might have some ideas.

SoupDragon · 12/03/2022 08:38

I like the look of their peg board organisers and drawer dividers (which look like they're about to be discontinued)

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 12/03/2022 08:38

When we had a new kitchen, I ended up with three lovely white Pyrex saucepans with removable handles that wouldn't work on induction hob. They are now in deep drawers corraling items together.
I see three whisks but I think one is for hand mixer? My hand mixer lives in the large pan - with the cable coiled up- plus all its accessories. All my (rarely used) baking things like your cookie cutters and piping doodahs live in small pan.
Graters (like you I have 2 flat ones plus a box one) live in medium pan.
I have long (4 inch deep) clear trays to organise badly behaved utensils.

Louyoga · 12/03/2022 08:39

@Newnormal99 yes I think some kind of tub or container is the way to go. Also just had my first look at TikTok (I know I’m a dinosaur) Lordy that’s a rabbit hole! Great ideas on there thanks for the suggestion @Sunnysidegold - even pottymouth Gordon Ramsey posts on it. I need to get with the programme!
@Oldtiredfedup I have a thin tall cupboard with all my jars in and my cupboards are full with my (beautifully dymo -labelled 😇)pantry storage!

Get some plastic baskets and have a re-organise. Chuck out what you don’t use, then put the rest in baskets inside the drawers.

Louyoga · 12/03/2022 08:43

@SoupDragon hmmm the pot lid organiser may be good for plates - thanks!

If you can't resize the drawers (or get additonal trays fitted on top - same idea as your ikea cutlery trays but fitted) then I'd second the sughestion of a series of boxes that tesselate so that you can fit all the things in. Some great storage/organiser ideas on instagram

I also have a tiny kitchen but if I had the space you have for that shelf unit I'd get a proper piece of storage furniture and put that away.

RonCarlos · 12/03/2022 08:49

I also have no idea how to organise my deep drawers so following!

anne2650 · 12/03/2022 08:52

I use mine for all my crockery.

something like this. I've bottles of vinegar/ oil etc in part and then stand the cling film etc in one of the sections.

Louyoga · 12/03/2022 08:59

You are all brilliant thanks so much. I’m off down the ikea rabbithole 😱

If you're going to ikea, their variera range is fab.
I've got the expandable lid holder in several places, saucepan lids in one, shallow baking trays in another, cutting boards in.3rd.
The white boxes with open handles and notch at front are so useful.
Just be aware that some items only fit ikea drawers which are 50cm.deep front to back. Most aren't this deep.
I also bought a roll of quite expensive drawer liner but i store all my plates in deep drawer with only this liner keeping them in place. Much cheaper than internal fixings

You may be able to purchase a pull-out trays which can be retro fitted into the top drawer. Then, with inserts you could use it for your cutlery and odds and ends, spices etc. We bought cheap white cutlery inserts from IKEA four ours. Our units are a metre wide so we had to buy several and trim them to fit with a Stanley knife.

It is also possible to buy dividers for drawers which are very useful.
