Transvaginal ultrasound, sonographer calling out numbers?

So I’m wondering if anyone knows about the numbers the sonographer calls out during an abdominal ultrasound & transvaginal one? Whilst checking my ovaries etc he called out numbers a few times but I didn’t ask during the time as I was nervous. Does anyone know what they mean?🤔

Measurements I imagine - was he looking at your ovaries? Do you have a cyst? Did they not tell you what they found at the end of the scan?

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 18:50

@SpikyJugs thank you for replying 🥺 so I have irregular periods, and elevated testosterone levels so my doctor referred me for the ultrasound. So I imagine they were looking at my ovaries? He called out numbers every now and then and then at the end said my doctor will talk to me about my results in about a week. I should’ve asked what the numbers meant there and then 🙄

I work in obs and gynae ultrasound. They would be measurements of ovaries, endometrium, adnexa, any cysts/polyps/fibroids if seen. I presume there was an assistant noting these numbers down? Nothing to worry about and completely normal. I usually write them down rather than shouting them out as that's a bit weird. Must just be this man's way of working.

As a side note, apart from obstetrics, generally we don't give results during the scan as we are not doctors and not trained to discuss further tests/next steps if we do find something untoward.

I’ve had many transvaginal scans and never had anyone calling out numbers. The images and information for mine has always been recorded on the computer during the scan.

Was he calling out the numbers to anyone in particular? It could be the way they work there to make sure they know which part of your body he was looking at. I’d be really surprised if someone else was manually recording the results of the scan.

Helenahandkart · 11/03/2022 18:58

I’ve had loads of these. In my case the numbers all related to the size of the follicles on the ovaries, and the thickness of my endometrium.

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 19:04

@SpicePumpkin @TheSnowyOwl yes there was an assistant writing them down, I was confused as they were random numbers so I was thinking how does she know what the numbers were for 🤔the last one he said was “ovaries 8” so I’m like ok what does that mean 😂.
But I see @SpicePumpkin are there any numbers that aren’t normal? As I guess there’s a normal range and abnormal. But no idea which part the numbers were for so I guess I just wait lol!

Sounds like they are investigating polycystic ovary syndrome, a feature of which is multiple cysts/follicles on the ovaries. The random numbers will be the dimensions of the ovaries and those of any cysts/follicles.
Polycystic ovaries are bigger than normal ovaries with a lobulated/lumpy outline. A normal ovary will have a number of follicles at various stages of development so with lumps of different sizes.

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 19:10

Ah thank you both @Helenahandkart @Angrymum22 if I remember rightly when he was pushing towards my left side the number was lower but can’t remember what, the right side my number was higher. So even then I was like hmm 🤔 but I guess I’ll find out when I speak to my doctor.
Thank you all for your helpful responses! ☺️

A typical follicle when mature can be 18-20mm
A normal ovary is about 2.5-5cm in length and 1.5-2cm in width.
Ovary 8 would suggest 8cm so they may be enlarged due to the presence of multiple cysts.
When you see your doctor they will go through the results. There are a number of causes for PCOS so maybe google the uk PCOS support site where they lots of info.
You can then be prepared with questions if your doctor thinks you have PCOs.

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 19:26

@Angrymum22 so can a follicle also be enlarged? Because he called out 24 when he got to my right side. And okay yes that makes a lot of sense so yeah ovaries 8 could mean it’s possibly enlarged then from that info! But thank you I will definitely look now at the pcos support site!

Helenahandkart · 11/03/2022 19:28

Your ovaries may have multiple follicles on them, so 8 may have been the number of follicles, or 8mm in size. The lead follicle grows bigger, as Pp said, but the smaller follicles might only be 8mm I think.
My scans were due to IVF so I often had 10+ follicles of varying sizes.
But even normal none-IVF ovaries have multiple follicles on them

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 19:58

@Helenahandkart ah okay so it could also be 8 follicles… thank you this is all very helpful lol, didn’t realise how much I didn’t know! Now 2 weeks to find out results, sigh!

24 will be 2.4 I imagine. I would wait for the results from your doctor or consultant rather than advice from mumsnet.

fudgecat · 11/03/2022 20:15

Simultaneously hosting the staff bingo afternoon over zoom probably 😁

Leobaby · 11/03/2022 20:35

@SpicePumpkin yes I was thinking 2.4 also! But yes I shall do, just wanted to know if anyone had been through similar. Thanks!

@fudgecat hahaha that made me giggle! new one for number 8 is “ovaries 8” I might have to shout that one out when I play bingo at work now. 🙊

Hey @Leobaby I'm going for a scan on my ovaries this coming Friday so I'm commenting here because I'm curious about your results and also I will come back and let you know if my ultrasound tech shouts weird numbers!!

Fordian · 14/03/2022 19:34

My dentist calls out all sorts of weird things!

Helenahandkart · 14/03/2022 19:51

I’m pretty sure the numbers at the dentist are about your gum health and the pocket of gum around your teeth. It’s a measure in mm and should be zero, but if you have any gum disease or loosening there may be a gap of several mm between your tooth and the gum. That’s what my dentist was calling out last time I went.

Leobaby · 15/03/2022 09:30

@baabiee hey! Good luck for Friday I hope it all goes ok! I’ll find out about my results on the 25th, ages away :( but yes keep me updated also!!

OP posts:
baabiee · 21/03/2022 10:59

@Leobaby haven't got my results, my doctors surgery rang me and asked if I'd go for ANOTHER blood test but they can't get me in for 2 weeks then I'll get to see my GP after that and I'll get all the results all at once😩
Only a few more days until you get your results though!😁

Leobaby · 21/03/2022 11:36

@baabiee hey! And how come you need another one? Did they explain why?🤔 oh bless you that’s actually so long for you I can’t believe that!! Hopefully everything is ok tho but maybe try to speak to your doctor and ask if you can 🤔yes Friday, we shall see!😬

OP posts:
baabiee · 21/03/2022 11:40

@Leobaby she just said the doc wanted another blood test because my last was early February and then she will actually see me face to face!
I can't fault her to be honest she's been brilliant haven't had to chase anything up with her things have always kept moving.
The receptionist told me to keep trying for a cancellation for the blood test so I'm going to ring every day and hope and pray that I land on one🤣

Leobaby · 21/03/2022 14:41

@baabiee ah I see okay, so she just wants a more up to date one then I guess! Yes ring first thing in the mornings and hope there are cancellations! 🥺 fingers crossed for you. You’ll have to wait a long time otherwise. I hate waiting lol!

OP posts:
baabiee · 21/03/2022 21:22

@Leobaby, thank you! I've rang the doctors back and you'll never guess what! They're letting me have my blood test at the hospital tomorrow morning so I might get my answers this week🥺

Possibly Friday the same as you😄

Leobaby · 22/03/2022 17:35

@baabiee ah that’s amazing!! I’m guessing you had your bloods this morning?! Fingers crossed you get your results this week then!🥺🤞🏼
