A man pointed at me and said

"Is it your first baby?"

He was an old man in a lift at the hospital. Pointed straight at my abdomen and asked. I'm not pregnant. I am definitely feeling morbidly obese now though! New self hatred unlocked. I thought it was just my hips, thighs and arse that were fat but apparently I look pregnant enough to be unmistakably showing.

😭😭😭😭

What a plank, I'd never ask someone if they are pregnant. Were you near the maternity ward? Maybe he thought that is where you were going?

Gemmathecat · 09/03/2022 17:23

Typical old fart on the phone wind up thinking he’s funny. What a horrid man don’t worry about it doubt hes an oil painting darlin

ClariceQuiff · 09/03/2022 17:25

Aside from the fact he's an idiot, it was probably the hospital setting that prompted the comment.

Eightiesfan · 09/03/2022 17:35

This happened to me in a furniture shop, we were looking at sofas and the salesman commented that it would arrive before the baby arrives (strike one) . I looked him straight in the eye and asked what baby?

He spluttered apologies claiming that as I was wearing a smock (strike 2) - it was actually a very cute a-line dress which I never wore again!

In the end we had to leave just to put him out of his misery, DP and DC thought it was hilarious.

He probably thought you’d appreciate the small talk. I doubt he was trying to be mean.

Thelikelylass · 09/03/2022 17:47

I remember being with my overweight friend in a work setting and the elderly Italian lady we were meeting shouted 'Bambino' and pointed all happy and clappy at my friend's stomach. We didn't have the heart to tell her as she was so genuinely delighted for my friend.

Darbishire27 · 09/03/2022 18:22

Oh God, I’ve done this, 10+ years ago at work and still wracked with guilt. I was sending staff to find a chair for what I thought was a pregnant visitor on a really hot day, when she demurred I said “I’ve been pregnant during summer- we’re glad to help”.
“But I’m not pregnant”….
I was so horrified I had no comeback, just stood there opening and closing my mouth. I’ve seen her subsequently in professional settings and I can see her thinking “Bitch”. But I was genuinely trying to be supportive. I never venture to guess now, so am grateful for Baby on Board badges, overt bump cradling etc so I can offer up my seat on the train without fear of offence.

AHungryCaterpillar · 09/03/2022 18:24

I don’t think it’s just because you was at the hospital, I had a friend that was constantly offered seats on the bus/train as
People though she was pregnant. I don’t think they were trying to be nasty but definitely shouldn’t comment

LolaLuffnagal · 09/03/2022 18:55

I've had this happen to me before. I was at my brother's 30th birthday, all dolled up and feeing great in my lovely new dress when an old family friend bounced up towards me excitedly, putting her hand on my round tummy and exclaiming "look at you! How lovely, a baby on the way!" I don't know which one of us was more mortified when I politely informed her I wasn't expecting 😳

SirenSays · 09/03/2022 18:56

A baby would have to be crowning before I'd dare ask any woman this

WonderfulYou · 09/03/2022 19:08

This has happened to a couple of my friends - all were very slim!

I think it actually happens more with slimmer women as with larger women it’s easier to tell that they’re overweight.

You were in a lift and in a hospital and you could have had your hands on your hips or stomach and he just assumed you were.

^ May have just wanted a chat, admittedly very clumsy and he shouldn’t have said it.
