Nice things that have immediately been ruined

I have loads. But two in particular come to mind.

  1. Spent ages choosing a long down coat. Extremely indecisive but also v cold with ds playing football, so this was painful. Then within a week caught it on barbed wire and ripped it. Not badly, mended it invisibly, but the RAGE.

  2. New kitchen installed (about 15 years ago) - always going to be stressful. Heavily pregnant, plus my DH got proper flu, so it was two weeks of hell. Within two weeks, I found a bag of potatoes that had rotted and the resulting revolting fluid had seeped right into the lowest shelf of the wall cabinet - you know, the bit that forms part of the structure.

Back in the early 90’s bought PFB toddler an expensive coat ( £50 +) in an independent boutique. Coat is a couple of weeks old and Grandma takes them out for the day, toddler leans against wet white gloss paint. No amount of washing, scrubbing, scraping solvent or stain devil got it clean. Only bought cheap supermarket coats after that

Got lovely new winter gloves for Christmas. Left them on the sideboard (in my own house!), my mum "put them away" and now I can only find one. No idea why she felt the need but I get cross every time I need gloves and have to wear my ratty old pair!

@Magdalena543

I love some of these 😄. My worst one was I picked up my brand new car (I had never owned a new car before) which was my treat for my 40th birthday. I was so thrilled. The next day I parked in town and when I came back it had a dink in the driver's door. Somebody had parked next to me and opened their door onto mine. I did cry a bit. I had that car for 3 years and always tried to not look at the door. Everyone noticed it too - "Oh you've got a dent in your new car" yes I know, but thanks for reminding me!
very similar happened to me, only difference that it wasn't a birthday present and was in the school car park for summer fete. I actually cried in frustration in front of my neighbor (and husband) when i got home. I was GUTTED

@Startuplife

I’ve told this story here before. Stupidly lit a candle underneath the TV and it melted the sensor so was useless. Went out and bought a new one the next day. That night thought “oh the candle’s a lot shorter now, I’m sure it’ll be fine this time”. I then sat watching the TV watching a huge smoke mark take over the screen.

I still to this day don’t know how I could have been so stupid. It was very tense in our house that night Grin

Omg 🙈🙈🙈

Had living room painted after several years of saving up, within a week my 7yo daughter had covered her hand with red lip gloss and pressed it to the crisp white chimney breast.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

In December last year my car was rear ended whilst I was stationary at traffic lights. Needed a new back bumper, lights, parking sensors etc. with Christmas and supply issues, it was in the body shop for nearly 2 months. I only got it back 5 weeks ago. Exactly the same thing happened again last week.
Oh and this reminds me too!

A neighbour reversed into my lovely new car on Christmas eve. Smashed bumper, Smashed lights, damage to battery. It got collected and taken away for repairs on Boxing day and due to issues with the other parties insurance it was 12 weeks before I got it back.

2 days later I reversed it into a lamppost and repeated the damage.

That was an awkward phone call to my husband.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/03/2022 22:33

Not ruined but lost.

Was looking for a good s hook run coat. . Managed to find one online, second hand but really good quality. Coat was amazing. Went away. Caught train. Came home without it.
I'd only only had it two weeks

cocktailclub · 09/03/2022 22:51

Picked up brand new car. Next morning it snowed and someone hit me head on. Luckily no serious injuries either side.
New car with 7 miles on the clock was really badly damaged but not quite a write off. Took four weeks to repair and I never get the same about it again.

We are all so enormously unlucky, or clumsy, or both. And there are so many of us!

@PrincessCarolyn

New dress. I used scissors to snip off the tags but I snipped too far and cut a hole in the skirt. Hadn't even put it on yet!
Oh that reminds me of a new skirt I bought. The tag had been placed through the material right in the middle at the front. Instead of cutting the plastic thing, I just pulled it, thinking the back would snap off, but it didn’t, it pulled straight through making a V shaped hole in the material. 😫
Knittingnanny2 · 09/03/2022 22:58

@MissMarplesGoddaughter me too, my beautiful new induction touch hob- bashed a small corner off with a pan. My son in law said “ wait 6 months and then decide if it still bothers you”
It does

Hop27 · 09/03/2022 23:07

When we were students, my DSis, bought a huge Guerlain bronzer (it was the size of a side plate) At the time it was a huge splurge for her, (£50) and just a treat to be using luxury products.
Day one she dropped it on the bathroom floor and sink, smashing it everywhere.
She gathered what she could into a freezer bag and used that for the next 12 months !!!

SugaKookie · 09/03/2022 23:09

When we got married we didn’t have much money. I don’t really wear jewellery so bought a cheapo ring on eBay. For our 10th wedding anniversary DH finally bought me a lovely wedding ring. It was a little big but I couldn’t be arsed getting it resized…2 weeks later it fell off my finger somewhere never to be seen again 😭

Keladrythesaviour · 09/03/2022 23:12

Spent £1500 on new carpet in the hallways, stairs, landing and bedroom. A light cream in a wool blend. Looking back, terrible choice with a dog. We were incredibly careful, washing her feet etc before she came indoors, the. DH's cousin was visiting and before we could say anything he let the dog in from outside and she ran all the way up the stairs, round the bedroom and back down again leaving a trail of muddy foot prints behind her. We got the worst of the staining out, though you could still see the darker patches but it was a looped style so in cleaning it we had pulled some of the loops loose and it just looked scruffy.

As a child I went through three Parker pens by breaking the nibs. I don't know why my parents kept buying them for me!

The one that annoyed me the most was newly renovated bathroom all shiny and beautiful. DH cleaned it, including the beautiful metal shower controls, with a scrubber. Left fine scratches all over everything. I cried.

Callipygion · 09/03/2022 23:31

This happened years ago but it still rankles. Had a beautiful new wool three-quarter length coat. Was at some family do at a pub and had folded up my coat and placed it on the seat behind me. Mother-in-law takes it and says put it on the back not the seat and places it over the back of her chair (the shoulders of it over the backrest). When we came to leave and I put it on, someone had dropped a cigarette on it and burnt a hole in it. The bottom had been draped over the floor. I was so upset. Did manage to get a dressmaker to chop about 6 inches off the bottom and re hem it, so it was wearable as a shorter jacket. It was ok but never the same.

The day we moved into our house the cat pushed a mug off the fireplace and smashed the hearth

Amazingly she survived another 13 years after that

Discwriter · 09/03/2022 23:51

Bought a lovely new car, DH scraped ice off the windscreen using a credit card, made little scratches everywhere. Every time it is sunny I see it and I get the rage all over again!

2ndBorn · 10/03/2022 00:04

I’ve cracked every phone screen I’ve had.
Cracked my most recent phone & was gutted but left it for ages, got to the point where the glass was really chipped/sharp so decided to pay £130 to get it fixed (big splurge).
Thought ‘should really get a proper case now’.
Dropped phone a few weeks later as I’m an idiot, smashed back of phone.

SpikeySmooth · 10/03/2022 00:34

Was cleaning a space saver on my worktop which suddenly swerved and crashed sideways into the new induction hob, taking out a piece of glass. It's still useable, but it was expensive, Hadn't even paid for it at the time (on tick Confused) The space saver came out unscathed.

Friendofdennis · 10/03/2022 04:26

My prize possession - a bargain Joseph Ettedgui wrap dress originally £1000 which I had bought in a sample sale for a fraction of the cost. I wore it once (it was so stylish and I felt amazing in it ) and hung it up in the spare room. Our pet hamster escaped from his cage and had bees roaming around the house unknown to me. He chomped his way through the dress biting out a huge jagged area of the front panel which was beyond repair

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 10/03/2022 05:26

Brand new kitchen. My mum managed to pour boiling water over a join in the worktop and it started to lift and separate.

One of my cats tipped over a kettle of cold water onto the join in the worktop while we were out...😻
The damage is done, but the kettle now lives in a cupboard and only come out when we need it.🤦‍♀️

My dad wallpapered the bathroom with some textured wallpaper (not the "foam" type, the embossed paper type you paint over) I was helping, and being about 8, got a bit bored so leaned on the wall...
The "dent" was still there when I sold the house after my parents had died 35yrs later.🤷‍♀️

My mum made me wear my brand new sandals when we went to visit her brothers family, so I went upstairs to get them, put them one, then slipped and fell top to bottom because the soles where polished and had no grip. One of the buckles snapped. I got a total and absolute bollocking from her for breaking the shitty shoe and no sympathy a fair few bruises on my bum, back and elbow.🤬

haversfjord · 10/03/2022 05:28

Back in the day I coveted a particular Laura Ashley lamp but couldn’t afford it, so I was thrilled when I spotted it in the new year sale.

I can remember the feeling of satisfaction as I carried it out of the shop - right before I tripped on the doorstep , dropping and smashing the lamp to smithereens.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 10/03/2022 05:42

I forgot about this hilarious thread. Grin

MulticatHouse · 10/03/2022 05:51

Brand new cream dress from Ralph Lauren, was buttering some toast and flicked a lump of Lurpak on it, right at the front. Of course it wouldn't come out.
Had to dye it dark green. The dye took pretty well and the dress is wearable but I know there is still a slightly lighter patch where the butter was.

Curtains, we can't have nice curtains at all. Cats ruin them in 5 minutes.
