Nice things that have immediately been ruined

I have loads. But two in particular come to mind.

  1. Spent ages choosing a long down coat. Extremely indecisive but also v cold with ds playing football, so this was painful. Then within a week caught it on barbed wire and ripped it. Not badly, mended it invisibly, but the RAGE.

  2. New kitchen installed (about 15 years ago) - always going to be stressful. Heavily pregnant, plus my DH got proper flu, so it was two weeks of hell. Within two weeks, I found a bag of potatoes that had rotted and the resulting revolting fluid had seeped right into the lowest shelf of the wall cabinet - you know, the bit that forms part of the structure.

@reesewithoutaspoon

brand new laminate flooring from front room through to dining room , within a week my son came in on his bike and let it drop on its side. the pedal took a chunk out of the flooring, right in the middle. the only thing that covers it is having a large rug central in the room. I could have cried. I,d saved for so long to get the new flooring.
You can probably pay for a French polisher to make good that. It won't be perfect as it's deep but would be an improvement

@Echobelly

Bought lovely Ted Baker dress for my sister's wedding. Took it to dry cleaners afterwards and only when I went to put it on for something else a few months later did I find the dry cleaners had damaged a large section of fabric at the back so I could never wear it again. Stopped using that dry cleaner after that.
Dry cleaners ruined my wedding dress.

I paid £100 for them to clean it properly for me, put it on when they delivered it back and half the lace/pearls etc was ruined.

Cried my eyes out.

They blamed me.

Brand new cream coloured sofa. Leant over to admire it whilst holding a ketchup-slavered hot dog. Hot dog slithered out of my hand and plopped into the new sofa in all its ketchup-y glory.

Brand new kitchen. My mum managed to pour boiling water over a join in the worktop and it started to lift and separate.

Machine washed the most beautiful woollen Fairisle cardigan and ruined it. Failed to learn from the experience and did the exact same thing again with the most beautiful woollen jumper.

Newly painted room. Managed to scrape the wall with the stud on my jeans pocket. Left a 6 inch scrape.

DH gave me an iPad Air for Christmas as a wonderful surprise present. Almost immediately I dropped it face down onto a hard wooden floor. It didn't break but the memory still makes me come over all unnecessary.

Helpel · 09/03/2022 19:01

New kitchen complete with limestone tiles finished just in time for Christmas. About two weeks ago my daughter spilt near squash on the floor, didn't worry about it at all as my husband had sealed the tiles at least 3 times and we'd already dropped a glass of red wine to no I'll effect. However, the squash somehow had crazy acidic properties and it has soaked in /stripped a layer off the tile leaving a big splash mark! No amount of polishing will get it out!!!

We’d just had a lovely new bathroom fitted. I was putting all my lotions and potions back in when I dropped a glass jar of moisturiser onto the toilet and chipped the top of the brand new cistern. Jar of moisturiser survived intact!
^ this Only it was the sink that got chipped.
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/03/2022 19:02

Oh my mum and I were talking about this the other day! My most memorable:

  • I had a lovely pink corduroy jacket (this was about 1998 or so!) - wore it to work at Costco and must have got bleach on it as it by the time I got home that evening the fabric was eaten away on the front. Was about the second time I wore it. Work wouldn't reimburse me for it.
  • When (now) DH and I moved into our first house, my dad gave me some money to do some essentials and we decided to use £500 to get a nice fireplace fitted. It was marble. The evening before it was due to be fitted, DH and I had a row and he slapped something down on the floor which caused the badly laid laminate flooring to wobble, and the fire surround to fall over and shatter on the floor. He got up and walked out and honestly it was almost the end of our relationship - it didn't, but the good news was it did prompt him to modify his behaviour!
  • dad offered to fit a new bath for us and managed to drill through it. He then fixed it with some boat stuff and I remember him calling me and explaining what had happened "but it's hardly noticeable". Reader, it really was noticeable Grin but it did hold up for 15 years till we moved!
  • went to the tip, was getting rid of an old gas fire, got charcoal (?) on my jumper and still can't get it out. Not that it matters now, it's been washed that many times it's shrunk.

@PissedOffNeighbour22

We're currently renovating our new home. Already we have 4 chips in the tiled floor. It's a huge floor and took my DP forever to lay it. We're just going to have to live with it and try not to get too angry when we notice the chips.

Also bought a lovely slipper bath which we managed to get all the way home in a van, carried it to the outbuildings and my DP knocked over a very heavy rusty sharp metal pole the previous owners left and it hit the bath in the only place the padding had fallen off. I was so annoyed I didn't even care my DP almost broke his hand trying to stop the pole falling.

These chips might be fixable. See if there's a "magic repair" person near you. They fix chipped and damaged hard surfaces using colour matched resin I think. Chipped tiles, baths, stone worktops etc.
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/03/2022 19:07

Also, so so many tops I have worn and then cooked something that has splattered oil on it.

I have TWO pinnies I could wear, I never learn!

MinglingFlamingo · 09/03/2022 19:10

My boss picked up her brand new car. Put it in reverse to drive off of the forecourt. Reversed into a post, put it straight in to first and went back on to the forecourt and left it there to get the dent fixed 🤣

My GDF did this on the test drive and reversed and smashed the showroom window

As a kid got a cabin bed, i found the ladder a bit tricky to use and behind the ladder was the bookcase bit. So first ever time I went to bed I split the bookshelf.

Brought a waterproof on a whim and was in town because it was a local lantern parade. The lanterns where those fire torches which are often seen on tv costume dramas by people going to the castles dungeons. I melted the sleeve of the brand new coat when the wind was in the wrong direction

wanttokickoffbutcant · 09/03/2022 19:12

I have a few and they are mainly my poor mums

When I was very young my mum saved up for ages to buy a leather topped table that she love. I was drawing happily with a biro on a piece of paper. The table has a very wobbly indent of a giraffe on it until she got rid of it…

My mum had saved for years to have wooden flooring put

wanttokickoffbutcant · 09/03/2022 19:19

Ahh bloody cat!!

Mum saved for years for wooden floors. My brother had a party and lots of girls came wearing stilettos with no heels on so just nails (80’s). My mum cried.

My mum died 12 years ago and I was given a silver ring my dad had made for her when she was sixteen and she wore until she died at just turned 60. My mum was very petite and had tiny fingers. I wore it and lost it at the wake.

Magdalena543 · 09/03/2022 19:23

I love some of these 😄. My worst one was I picked up my brand new car (I had never owned a new car before) which was my treat for my 40th birthday. I was so thrilled. The next day I parked in town and when I came back it had a dink in the driver's door. Somebody had parked next to me and opened their door onto mine. I did cry a bit. I had that car for 3 years and always tried to not look at the door. Everyone noticed it too - "Oh you've got a dent in your new car" yes I know, but thanks for reminding me!

Crackercrazy · 09/03/2022 19:25

We’ve managed to chip a piece out of a brand new quartz worktop - a glass fell out of a wall cupboard and caught the edge. We’d not had it long 🙁 We kept the chip so did manage to get it repaired but I still know it’s there and I can see it.

New Amtico flooring - expensive and meant to be so durable. We’ve managed to tear/gouge a piece out not once but twice! No idea how we did it. Thankfully we spare tiles so it was quite easy to replace the strip but still bloody annoying.

Crackercrazy · 09/03/2022 19:25

We have also ripped vinyl flooring too!

I bought new earbuds the first time I wore them out running I dropped it down the street it was dark and it had fallen under a car . I tried to find it looked for it when light but no it had vanished. I can only assume it fell down the grid that the car was parked over . My dh still asks where the other ear bud is when he sees the other one in the charging pod , I just say must be in my jacket just because I don’t want to admit how careless I was .

grumpyyorkshiremum · 09/03/2022 19:29

I crashed my husbands brand new car into the back of my own whilst I was sat in the passenger seat...

my husband had just got his new car and wanted his phone connecting to it, I got in the passenger side of his car to connect it then realised the car needed to be started to connect it.

I leaned over to the drivers side put the key in and turned it.

Unfortunately I hadn't noticed my husband left the car 'in gear' and the car stalled and bumped forward and crashed into the back of my own car...

To make matters worse my husband was actually in my car at the time trying to fix my dash cam.

I cried

And had to pay for my husbands new car fixing and my own car fixing.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/03/2022 19:32

DM bought some new table mats when I was about 6. She was very pleased with them. I thought they were great for helping
Me slide down the stairs. They got very scratched.

DP bought an expensive new car. We went to the airport on a windy day. He got a trolley for the suitcases and put it near the car. A gust of wind blew the trolley into the car and dented it. I'm so glad he was the one who parked the trolley! 17 years later and we still have the car.

I washed my new AirPods. I don’t know about other earphones, but readers, AirPods survive a boil wash with no noticeable effects.

I have never waited for a wash cycle to drain with such trepidation and dismay.

whywouldntyou · 09/03/2022 19:42

Brought a bright orange puffa style coat and thought I was the bees knees, went on the back of a mates motorbike and got oil all up the back. Was expecting a right rollicking from my mum but she was fine as she had done very similar when going out with my dad 🙂

Duxiejhrhrvjz · 09/03/2022 19:42

I got updated my bathroom but kept the old bath/toilet etc. Paid a fortune for a really nice traditional navy bath panel and within a month had a bath leak and had to pull the panel off with a crowbar Sad

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 09/03/2022 19:43

I scratched the lovely alloys of my new, much longed for, car within hours of picking it up 😩

CecilyTheWake · 09/03/2022 19:44

Moved into the first place I bought which was a new build. I’d paid out for some lovely engineered wood flooring. It was beautiful with my white walls and new furniture and I was super chuffed with it.

Literally the second week I was there, the toilet suddenly started overflowing, depositing gallons of water and sewage which flowed into the hallway, ruining the floors in pretty much the whole flat. I was devastated. It turned out that the builders had left a waste pipe for the flats blocked so at least they did pay for the damage but I was so upset.

Taylor1986 · 09/03/2022 19:44

Dd drew on my new sofa the day it was delivered! It’s had a throw on it ever since!

Angliski · 09/03/2022 19:46

@mull. Kiss off, on Amazon. Gets pen out of sofas. Thank me later :)
