Advice on challenging council tax bracket?

We are in a higher band than all our neighbours in a very old cottage built at the same time and not sure why ours is costing more than the 3 or 4 houses closest to us. The trouble is I don’t want my application to backfire and cost our neighbours instead .

Does anyone have experience of challenging theirs? I don’t know whether they measure it by bedrooms or number of residents or how they decide if the properties are all detached and a similar size.

Can you find the Martin Lewis programme on Catch up that was on last night? He did a little section on it. There are two things you have to check and he said how to do it. I didn’t pay a huge amount of attention I’m afraid, but he explained it really clearly.

We managed to get ours reduced a number of years ago. The basis for it was that the 3rd bedroom was below the council's minimum size to count as a bedroom so we were reclassified as a 2 bed. All the 3 bed flats in our block were reassessed but I think each individual flat had to apply for it to happen.

I don't know if the minimum bedroom size thing still applies as more recently I have encountered new builds with tiny third bedrooms.

I will look for Martin Lewis too and thanks for these very helpful replies. Perhaps we have one more bedroom than the others even though it’s small so just had a desk in.
