Semantle episode 3

Somehow we've almost filled 2 threads already so here is thread 3. I still need a distraction from the news, and Semantle certainly fits the bill.

To understand what I'm on about followthis link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I actually find it more satisfying if it's taken me more time!

I solved Semantle #39 in 44 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.92. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #35. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 23.68. semantle.novalis.org/

Stuck at 976 today. Determined to finish as ended up stropping off in a huff yesterday when couldn’t get past 997. I shall not be beaten! (Said through clenched teeth)

Got lucky today! Went straight in on green, had a few colds and then went from 945 to getting it.

I solved Semantle #39 in 61 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 17.34. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #39. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 46.15 (984/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Thought I might’ve cracked it when I got to 993, but noooooooo. Too early for gin?

You would be (991) if someone else was (the answer) towards you, if that helps!

I think some of the other numbers people are stuck on are like 991

Do you google synonyms for words?

Is that considered cheating?

So if you got 'cheating' at 980, would you google it and put in all the things you find? Or are you all just much much better at this than I am Blush

(in my defence I solve wordle every day, mostly in 4 guesses or less, and I do worldle every day, but I don't always get it, I usually get within a few hundred kms.)

I solved Semantle #39 in 93 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.39. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #92. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.97 (819/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Yes - I'm not sure anything is really cheating in this game, given that the relationships aren't always at all obvious. Synonyms aren't always helpful, they can leave you bouncing around in a 'local minimum', quite often you need to sidestep iyswim.

It's only cheating if you consider it to be so.

You're only playing against yourself so it doesn't effect anyone else if you use a thesaurus. I do sometimes if I'm really stuck.

It's meant to be fun, there's no such thing as cheating imho.

With a little help from DS I got correct word in about 35 guesses this morning. I was very lucky & hit a ~456 green word on 2nd guess, I had about 18 green words & only 14 not-green before correct guess.

I can only recommend that good guesses are common English words.

I solved Semantle #39 in 128 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.41. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 28.75 (541/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

Had so many greens and it wasn't until I showed 8 year old DD after school pick up that she got it!!

325 amuses me greatly because I had so many similar words just under 1000. If I'd tried that word ad got it as a high green one of you would have had to come looking for me as I'd have got totally lost wandering up that blind alley!

My top word was 992 and all my other top words matched that theme. I wasn’t going to get anywhere with those! Needed a nudge in the right direction from a friend.
