Drying clothes

So today is a beautiful sunny and breezy day - cold but warm in the sun. I've literally has all the bedding washed and on the line, blankets from the sofa and a load of clothes.
I'm as concerned as anyone about fuel price increases so waited for today to get it dry for free instead of using the heated airer which would have been on all week to dry what I've washed today.
We live in a residential area ( I can see other gardens from my bedroom windows) and literally noone else has hung out washing. I know there are loads of parents at home ( I work from home so the washing is a perk!!)
I slightly puzzled that all my neighbours must be very well off/hands in the sand/ or maybe just plain lazy about staying clothes and like their dryers! I mean who doesn't love a line dried sheet!
I realise there are more important things in the world right now - are you line drying where you are?

There's only been 1 or 2 days for the past few weeks where I haven't been able to hang washing out. Even if it's cloudy it still goes out as long as it's dry. I find even if it only gets a little time outside it then dries a lot quicker on the airer once it's brought in

Narutocrazyfox · 08/03/2022 16:06

@deadlanguage 😂 no, I don't usually need to wear them immediately. It's more that I have so little time to do washing that I often need to do three of four loads in a row, so as soon as one lot is dried, the next lot's ready for the dryer. I would not have time to hang out washing, and if I did, I probably wouldn't be in by the time it was dry (and wouldn't be able to avoid rain, etc.)

With a 5 person household, and two older kids into rugby, there is a LOT of laundry...

@Clarabe1

Obviously some people find doing the laundry a massive chore. I am not judging because people might work long hours etc. However if you are not working it’s not really hard is it. I am remembering my mum with 4 kids, a twin tub, no tumble dryer, nappies in a bucket soaking and she would sprint outside like Linford Christie to get washing on the line when the weather permitted. I bet a lot of people on this thread have similar memories.
This is the thing isn't it. I can remember my mum doing the same. She has 3 of us ( me and twin brothers-13mnths between us). She was a sahp whilst my dad worked (forces so away from family). Her day was taken up with occupying us and keeping house. It was done, house was never that messy or unclean, home cooked food every night. It does make me question why sahp with newer more modern appliances are struggling. And consequently really gets my goat when my nghbr moans about how hard her life is when she has 1 child in the house from 9-3 and doesn't get these quite frankly basic chores done.

I'm not judging those who work all day out of the home or who have some kind of disability - in fact if you were my nghbr and I was close enough to help I would offer. Even though I work at home it really has only taken a few mins to peg out the washing. I switch the kettle on before hand - load my mug with a teabag and when I come back I take a cup of tea back.

If your personal choice is not to hang outside then fine, you have your reasons as do I, but id rather not add to my fuel bills by running my heated airer or a tumble dryer or my heating unnecessarily.

Various reasons why not. If I put it out it would reek of smoke. My bloody neighbour is always using his log burner and it all comes into our garden - it fucking stinks.
Plus we're north facing so don't have enough sun in the winter, we can barely get it dry in the summer and very rarely get more than one load dry on a summers day. I also hate the 'fresh air' smell on laundry.

I've got a toddler and a newborn so really wish it was warm/breezy enough to get the washing out as the tumble dryer will be costing me a fortune.

My mum gets at least one load a day dried outside even in winter as she has a large south facing garden. She cares for an elderly relative so always has tons of bedding etc to get washed and dried.

Pretty windy here on my little mountain in north wales, it always is even in summer it’s usually breezy.

Anyway it’s been dull damp and overcast here. And cold. Judge away. My washing doesn’t dry outside at this time of year. I hang it inside in front of radiators, and put towels in the tumble.

Everything gets dried outside n the summer though apart from dd3 clothes as she has awful hayfever

ChristinePerfect · 08/03/2022 16:55

We've had the same neighbours for nearly 20 years, they've never pegged anything out. If I look down the row of back gardens there's maybe 2 other houses that use lines, I use a rotary.
I wouldn't judge someone for not pegging out, and using a tumble drier, but I can't understand why they would pay for something that's essentially free.
When there's a thread re competitive washing habits I always assume the posters who wash towels and bed linen every day are tumble drying.

Weclome · 08/03/2022 16:57

I'm in Scotland and have washing out most days.
I can see 3 other neighbours lines from my garden and we all hang out washing out on an almost daily basis.

mistermagpie · 08/03/2022 17:02

Me and my neighbour take the piss out of each other because as soon as it stops raining we both race out with wash! We are in Scotland so it's not that regular but I love getting things line dried, as long as the weather isn't actually making the wash wetter then I stick everything out. I don't have a tumble dryer anyway and hate everything hanging about on airers.

I've got a friend who 'hates drying outside' - no real reason as far as I can tell (not allergies etc) but when you go to her house on a dry day and there are airers all over the place, I do think it's a bit of a waste.

I love drying outside! If the ground is dry I always put stuff out. Even though we have access to the lines I'm the only one who ever uses one.

In our last home my horrible neighbors used a tumble dryer even during that hot summer.

We had a tiny yard years ago and i fashioned a line of sorts.

I can remember my DGM putting her coat on to peg laundry outside!
