Drying clothes

So today is a beautiful sunny and breezy day - cold but warm in the sun. I've literally has all the bedding washed and on the line, blankets from the sofa and a load of clothes.
I'm as concerned as anyone about fuel price increases so waited for today to get it dry for free instead of using the heated airer which would have been on all week to dry what I've washed today.
We live in a residential area ( I can see other gardens from my bedroom windows) and literally noone else has hung out washing. I know there are loads of parents at home ( I work from home so the washing is a perk!!)
I slightly puzzled that all my neighbours must be very well off/hands in the sand/ or maybe just plain lazy about staying clothes and like their dryers! I mean who doesn't love a line dried sheet!
I realise there are more important things in the world right now - are you line drying where you are?

Same here but even in summer I only ever see 1 other dry outside.
I dry outside all year round. Unless rain or snow.. Nov to Feb norm needs a few mins in tumble to take dampness out but that's it 10 min compared to 1 hr.

I did 3/5 of the beds today. Plus a white load.

Ill do other 2 beds tomorrow and dh unofrm.

I’m line drying in London today. One wash out and another finishing soon. It’s always my first thought when the weather looks bright at this time of year. I get really excited.😆 Most neighbours line dry too but not as relentlessly as me (we have 3 messy kids).

BookkeeperBobby · 08/03/2022 13:34

People who do not have washing out today are lazy planet wreckers it's true.

@Apatite4Destruction

I don't currently have access to a garden or washing line but when I did I wouldn't use it because I was worried about neighbour's reactions, to hanging the washing out too late, hanging it incorrectly, leaving it out too long, not planning enough with the weather.

Your neighbours might be avoiding hanging their washing up in case you judge them.

I'm sure they can hear my judgey thoughts. My judgey pants are pulled up high.

Honestly though how difficult is it to peg out some washing and why would you care if your nghbr thinks it's pegged wrong.

I can say it here but obviously not out loud in real life but I do honestly think that one of my neighbours who is a sahm with a one year old and 2 older ones at school is incredibly lazy not to have washing out today. She never has it out even in summer but does sunbath! Maybe keep that for another thread.

I hang mine out all year round unless it’s lower than4 degrees or raining. Even if it only gets it a bit drier at least that’s not moisture in my house and it does improve the finished smell!

megletthesecond · 08/03/2022 13:49

I don't get it either. It's just me with mine out today.

Mine is out all year round, and I have a shadier garden than my neighbours. I've had towels dry already this morning.

Moonface123 · 08/03/2022 13:50

l hang mine out all year long if not raining, if still abit damp l hang it in airing cupboard, l don' t have a tumble dryer. Most days l have washing out on the line.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 13:52

My neighbour is a machine, she has a wash done and out on the line by the time I have woken up at 7am. But, yes, I have the washing out and it's drying nicely in the sun despite the Baltic temperatures.

TooManyPJs · 08/03/2022 13:54

Maybe they are busy today.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 08/03/2022 13:54

I've never used a line in my life, but I've also never used the dry cycle on our washing machine. I use an old fashioned wooden clothes horse in the spare room, and dry sheets by hanging them on the landing and draped over doors.

Northernsoullover · 08/03/2022 13:55

My friend is adamant she won't stop using her tumble dryer. After April I bet she will change her mind. I'm not hanging outside at the moment. I have a clothes horse near a radiator so I'm not tumble drying. It works for me at the moment because although I work from home I have to go on appointments. I hope my neighbours don't think I'm lazy Confused. Maybe your neighbours use a clothes horse?

ParkheadParadise · 08/03/2022 13:56

@FourTeaFallOut
My washing is out for before 7 I wash it the night before and have it sitting in the basket all folded with my peg basket at the backdoor ready to go out in the morning.
I put the washing out in my jammies😂

Clarabe1 · 08/03/2022 13:58

I have been filling the washing line today! I love line dried washing and it saves fuel costs. I always take advantage of breezy sunny days where possible

DuesToTheDirt · 08/03/2022 14:01

We use a ceiling airer.

I rarely line dry. I have hay fever, so that's one thing. Plus it's never really dry enough by the time it needs to come in, so I have to hang it up again inside. And we don't have that much line space outside, plus the sun doesn't hit each area for very long.

Stressedmummyof4 · 08/03/2022 14:02

I had three full lines yesterday and today took full advantage. First I've not had a clothes airer in my living room for months. I have a tumble dryer but only use in dire emergencies. I couldn't afford to run it constantly. I've made a conscious effort this winter to claw back on my electric and gas usage.

justthecat · 08/03/2022 14:04

I’ve had two loads out today, well chuffed 😬

Sh05 · 08/03/2022 14:05

Maybe they've just no laundry today. We have dry and blustery days last week so I'd sheets, towels and curtains as well as all my normal laundry. Today is bright and windy but I've nothing to wash besides one pe kit.

ReginaFilange001 · 08/03/2022 14:05

@Apatite4Destruction

Maybe your neighbour sends it all out.

Modern washing machines with 4.5hr cycles invite judgement from neighbours. You could put your washing on at 6am and it would be after 10.30 by the time you got it outside and her next door would be muttering about the best part of the day being gone.

I have a modern machine (bought last November) and the wash cycle i use for 40c (I can hear someone now saying i should go lower) is 1hr 40 when I starts but is invariably less as it seems to adjust as it goes. Like a PP I put a wash on over night knowing the weather would be good and then I have literally been unloading, reloading and pegging out in between working from home. It's the only breaks I've taken today. Yes my neighbour may have a clothes horse or drying in radiators but why? She has the same size garden as me, a clothes line just hanging there. She has a husband and 3 children under 6. The bedding towels and clothes from that amount of people must be massive (it's me, husband and one child). She could have had it all washed and dried today. The bonus for me also is when clothes are line dried they need less ironing as well. Lots have been folded up and put away with no iron. So saving money and time there too.

FluffyBooBoo · 08/03/2022 14:05

No. I'm in a flat with no space for line drying.

I use a clothes horse inside.

nordica · 08/03/2022 14:06

It's only 10 degrees and my garden is shady so it wouldn't dry out today. I don't understand how your heated airer takes all week to dry a load though? I use a normal airer in front of a radiator in a room with good ventilation and it's generally dry in less than 24 hours, depending on what it is (i.e. jeans take longer than sheets).

JungleBungles · 08/03/2022 14:07

I’m at work (on my lunch) if I was at home I’d have some washing out on the line!

I had a day off yesterday and put some out didn’t completely dry but made me feel better

TheIsaacs · 08/03/2022 14:08

I use two clothes airers inside over winter, the clothes seem to dry well, but our lounge is south west facing so quite warm and often sunny in an afternoon so I’m sure that helps. I do love line drying outside though, it makes the washing smell so fresh!
