Drying clothes

So today is a beautiful sunny and breezy day - cold but warm in the sun. I've literally has all the bedding washed and on the line, blankets from the sofa and a load of clothes.
I'm as concerned as anyone about fuel price increases so waited for today to get it dry for free instead of using the heated airer which would have been on all week to dry what I've washed today.
We live in a residential area ( I can see other gardens from my bedroom windows) and literally noone else has hung out washing. I know there are loads of parents at home ( I work from home so the washing is a perk!!)
I slightly puzzled that all my neighbours must be very well off/hands in the sand/ or maybe just plain lazy about staying clothes and like their dryers! I mean who doesn't love a line dried sheet!
I realise there are more important things in the world right now - are you line drying where you are?

Sunny and windy here. Two loads on the line, lovely to put the inside clothes airer away. My washing is out at every opportunity.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/03/2022 14:10

I do my laundry at the weekend so have nothing to go on the line today.

ReginaFilange001 · 08/03/2022 14:11

It doesn't.
I meant that the heated airer would have literally been on all week to do the amount of washing I've done today and line dried.
I can do a load and dry it overnight, but I've done 5 loads of washing today (one overnight) that would be 1 a day for the next 5 days to get them on the airer. If also be building up washing at the same time.
My basket is currently empty!

Mine’s been out since 8am. I’m obsessed, I check the weather in advance and plan my washing days. It’s bedding tomorrow.

Nobody else in our row of three houses has had washing out since last September. I’ve had it out all winter, as long as the pavement is dry, mine goes outside.

My last reply was to @nordica - sorry tag didn't work

Yes my neighbour may have a clothes horse or drying in radiators but why? She has the same size garden as me, a clothes line just hanging there. She has a husband and 3 children under 6. The bedding towels and clothes from that amount of people must be massive (it's me, husband and one child). She could have had it all washed and dried today

Seriously, why do you care? You're using way too much headspace on your neighbour's washing.

ReginaFilange001 · 08/03/2022 14:16

@maddiemookins16mum
Same here. I checked the weather and left all my washing over the weekend. There was nothing we desperately needed - plenty of pants and socks etc
So I did some yesterday and hung out (2 loads) and more today.
I can remember my mum doing the same when I was little.

One is out, but I had to double peg it or I’d be asking my neighbours for my knickers back !

AchillesLastStand · 08/03/2022 14:18

My neighbours are the opposite and some have washing out for days at a time, overnight, even when it’s damp. I don’t understand it. As soon as I spot a drop of rain I dash out to get my washing in. Maybe they’re judging me for that.

My garden is too shady to get anything dry today and I’ll use my heated airer instead, but next week looks promising. I love dry sunny days for getting washing dried outside in the spring.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/03/2022 14:20

I'm interested in how people dry their washing inside. I put mine out on the line if possible, but ds has horrendous hay fever so he puts everything in the tumble dryer. Given electricity costs, I'm wanting to cut down on tumble drying but wasn't sure if it's worth buying one of the heated airers with covers. Do they really cope with double duvet covers?

Madcats · 08/03/2022 14:20

We still have underfloor heating on in the kitchen, so i usually just use an airer and run a dehumidifier once or twice a week. We get lots of showers here so i hesitate to put the washing out very regularly. I think my neighbour puts a load in when they get up each morning as there is usually something on the line by 9/10am.

Luckily the wind was blowing in the opposite direction on Monday, but some selfish soul on the nearby allotments decided that yesterday (sunny) afternoon was the perfect time to have a three hour bonfire!

We're definitely cutting back on electricity use here.

Celoo · 08/03/2022 14:20

It's a weird thing to have a been in your bonnet about. I would love to be able to hang my washing outside every day. When I left work this morning there was a beautiful sun rise opening to blue skies. Now I'm looking out my office window 5 miles away at the car wipers going, despite no rain in the forecast.
This is why unless I'm going to be home all day (which is rare) then I don't put washing out other than in summer. I'll have double the cost of washing it all again.

Moaningturtle · 08/03/2022 14:20

To any nosey neighbour it might look like I’m home and not bothering to hang out washing. In reality I worked until 8am this morning and slept until 13:45. No time now to get a load in and hung out before going to collect DC at 14:30 and by time I get back at 15:30 it’ll be too late to get anything dry.

(I can’t put a load on while I sleep as my machine is right under my bedroom and noisy!)

Gilly12345 · 08/03/2022 14:21

I use my tumble dryer but when the weather is good and I am prepared to stay in I will peg washing out.

I think you are too invested in this as not everyone has clothes lines or wants their washing out, it’s their concern and their energy bills.

ReginaFilange001 · 08/03/2022 14:32

To everyone saying it's none of my business and I'm wasting headspace thinking about this. You are right. It's not my business, I'm just nosy and fascinated by this. I'm really not wasting much headspace.

But let me tell you this. When I leave my house at 3 to collect my child from school at the same time as my nghbr - the aforementioned sahm with 1 child at home - she will constantly moan about something - how she has no time and her house is a mess and she has piles of washing so indirectly it does affect me because I want to shout - get the washing on the line!!!
I realise she could be struggling - 3 children are hard - she may have mental health problems - she may run out of time - the 1 year old may be at a difficult stage. I'm not ignorant that people are different and cope differently to situations.
When I worked in the office I would not have line dried as often as invariably it would rain whilst at work or something so I appreciate that working nghbrs may not hang out.
Regarding the heated airer - mine is the 2tier Lakeland with cover. I find I have to do smaller loads of washing so as not to overload it. Bedding is difficult beyond single size as it would have to be folded and then gets very thick to dry. It was very handy with a baby/toddler when I worked out of the home 4 -5 days a week and needed to get clothes and bedding dry.

I had washing out yesterday for the first time this year. I can see into about 15 gardens and only one other household had washing out.

I actually only dry washing outside if I'm going to be in because the weather is so unpredictable.
I'm also a bit of a weirdo and don't really like the smell of washing that's been dried outside I only do it because it's quicker than drying indoors

Hugasauras · 08/03/2022 14:35

But laundry is more than just sticking stuff on the line. She might have piles of laundry because she hasn't had a chance to put it in the machine yet or because it takes time to put it all away so she has clean clothes piles stacked up somewhere. Hanging washing out doesn't summon the laundry fairies to do every other part of the process for you.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 14:38

I think you are being a bit of a dick at this point.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 14:39

^^For the op.

Otherpeoplesteens · 08/03/2022 14:40

I went out to peg our sheets and duvet covers on the outside rotary dryer about an hour ago, but I'd have to walk across badly waterlogged ground to get to it, and risk the airer starting to lean off vertical. I try to line dry when possible, but in reality it's just not practical in NW England because the weather can change so quickly.

We normally have a clothes horse in the utility room which dries most things within a couple of days. There's a permanently-running extractor.

Hugasauras · 08/03/2022 14:41

(Or she might have a tumble dryer which means drying the laundry isn't the part that she's struggling with anyway).

Hellolittlestar · 08/03/2022 14:45

I dislike putting clothes outside to dry. It always starts raining at an inconvenient time or I forget to bring it in and remember at bedtime. It’s never fully dry either when it’s this cold and then I still have to faff when I bring it in.
I have a tumble drier, indoor clothes horse and dehumidifier.

pawpaws2022 · 08/03/2022 14:45

Not allowed to hang out in my garden. My next door neighbour isn't home or I can put my airer in hers

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 08/03/2022 14:46

I do not have a tumble drier and dry all my washing on a clothes horse in the corner of the living room.

I have never had condensation and have been here over 20 years but I do keep all the trickle vents in the windows open all year round.

Howshouldibehave · 08/03/2022 14:49

I’m gone at 6.30 in the morning to work and not back till it’s dark-I don’t have the time to hand out laundry in the week. Would love to have the opportunity to.
