Finally adulting

Today I went on a train, on my own, having booked a ticket myself....I'm 55! This is the first time in my life!

It occured to me that this was a first...I have never been solo on a plane either. (only been abroad a couple of times in my life)

What have you not done that is taken for granted by most?

I've never booked a holiday abroad. Went abroad as a child not since.

The flights, hotel, transport to the hotel, spending money etc. It's just too daunting!

Ds 27 sent me this.

I took a flight on my own to meet DH about three years ago. I had hand luggage only and got to the airport (one hour away) with 3.5h to spare!

I have two DC and often want to refer my “adulting” questions to a real adult

ShipshapeShore · 07/03/2022 21:02

I bought a gravy boat a couple of years ago. That's top level adulting in my book.

Tiddlywinkly · 07/03/2022 21:08

A gravy boat is on my to buy list! Got cake forks recently! Very grown up.

22Newnames · 07/03/2022 21:11

I bought my first gravy boat last year. It was a very underwhelming adulting moment I am afraid to say.

PlanetNormal · 07/03/2022 21:17

I have always been pretty good at being an adult, eg I have driven across Europe on my own but I have never bought “best” crockery, cutlery, glassware etc. We have the stuff we use every day, mostly a mix of Denby & IKEA, and that’s it. Going into JL & spending thousands on posh stuff to be used a couple of times a year seems to me to be a complete waste of money.

felulageller · 07/03/2022 22:09

Drank a cup of coffee.

Parents have both spent time in hospital with covid, one is still there and likely to be discharged to a nursing home.

Having to facilitate this little lot and be a parent to my parents finally makes me feel like an adult.

badlydrawnbear · 08/03/2022 09:03

I feel like I started adulting last year at the age of 40 when DH died and I became the only adult, the only parent. I had never lived alone and been the only adult, as I moved in with him after university. Having to arrange a funeral, transfer all the utilities etc to my name, tackle the piles and piles of admin related to his death, make financial decisions on my own, choose and apply for secondary schools for DC1, all the mundane day-to-day jobs are mine, deal with days when the electricity went off/ the boiler stopped working/ water was coming through the ceiling, planning and booking a trip away. It has been a crash course in adulting.

Never given birth, changed a nappy, had my sleep disturbed by DC, had to stay calm while teenaged angst was vented.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/03/2022 12:26

DH has never been into a bookies and placed a bet. I have.
Does that mean I'm more adulty than he is?

Hyenaormeercat · 09/03/2022 19:10

Good to see I'm not the only one late to this adulting lark...actually I've not been in a bookies either! I have a gravy boat though!! I don't drink coffee either.
I do have a DH and adult DC though!
