Would you pay off your holiday deposit just now….or is what’s happening in Ukraine making you think twice?

Exactly that. I’ve just received a reminder that the outstanding balance for our family holiday to Spain is due at the end of this month. This was originally booked in Jan 2020, and has been postponed for obvious reasons.

I’m gripped to the news. Watching what’s unfolding is sickening. And I have a worry about what could possibly be coming. However, also trying to hold on to some normality, especially for the kids. It’s been a scary and worrying 24 months.

Is it crazy to be spending £££ on your summer holiday right now? Is that money better off in my own pocket for the next few months?

I mean to say it IS extremely serious, obviously. But has the potential to be extremely serious for everyone.

Comedycook · 07/03/2022 10:39

The situation in the Ukraine is potentially extremely serious

It's not potentially serious. It is serious. I still don't understand why you need to remain close to family in the UK because of it? Obviously it's their choice. Like the ridiculous post I read last week from posters who were worried about sending their child to school or nursery in the UK because of the Ukraine situation.

Comedycook · 07/03/2022 10:39

Cross post!

I don't for a moment think war will spread to the UK. I believe it will be an ongoing war that lasts years but stays in the Ukraine. I'd be slightly worried if I was in a bordering country but not here.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 07/03/2022 10:42

Why on earth would you need to remain close to family in the UK because there's a war in the Ukraine?

Because I don't know about the poster who originally made the comment but some of us have family members with dementia, frequent delirium etc. who are extra agitated by the news at present and it's known to increase the rate of their deterioration.

If the present conflict continues at anything like this rate of media attention, it would be very difficult to arrange adequate care coverage to be able to go away for a holiday.

adriftabroad · 07/03/2022 10:44

Yes, I immediately realised I'd worded that wrongly!

Not sending your children to school is bloody ridiculous IMO, but international travel when there is a potentxial war brewing and you want to stay near elderly parents after the past 24 months we have had, I completely understand.

@Sallycinnamum

Thanks *@AnyFucker* I just spat my tea out reading your comment! MN at it's finest.
What is the ‘MN at its finest bit’? The posting just to be an arse and not even attempting to add any substance? What’s the point of that?

OP, it’s up to you, from a budget point of view prices are going up whatever happens now. If you can accommodate it go for it, you might just need to make some minor adjustments to your plans to make some savings whilst you’re there.

If your concerned about other factors then I think you need to look at where Spain is now and their local media. I’m guessing the situation is similar to here. If you wouldn’t be comfortable travelling here then fair enough, stay, but if you would then personally I wouldn’t have a problem with going to Spain.

I'm obviously way behind the times, we haven't booked an overseas holiday this year yet as I'm still worried about new Covid restrictions (if there's a new variant). We have vague plans to have a holiday sometime this year, but have tried to keep things as last minute as we can (we had various plans scuppered in the past couple of years). Plus we'll have another young baby and a house move to deal with, so we don't want to commit to anything right now. It's not occurred to me to worry about the impact of the war.

Personally I am not too concerned about the financial side as we're quite secure, but I do expect energy prices and general inflation to increase. So if your finances/employment would be sensitive to that then yes, it would be sensible to hold off on discretionary spending like holidays.

CarrieHughes · 07/03/2022 12:34

If everything really goes tits up a few hundred pounds won’t save you. It’ll buy you time, but not a quick fix.
So you might as well spend the money and enjoy while you can.

Of course this depends on how much your holiday costs - a few thousand might make a difference.

I'm off to Crete early October and my sister kindly paid for us both in full, can't wait!
Putin won't invade Crete.

I wanted to go back to Krakow in May but might rethink that & go to Prague instead.
