Would you pay off your holiday deposit just now….or is what’s happening in Ukraine making you think twice?

Exactly that. I’ve just received a reminder that the outstanding balance for our family holiday to Spain is due at the end of this month. This was originally booked in Jan 2020, and has been postponed for obvious reasons.

I’m gripped to the news. Watching what’s unfolding is sickening. And I have a worry about what could possibly be coming. However, also trying to hold on to some normality, especially for the kids. It’s been a scary and worrying 24 months.

Is it crazy to be spending £££ on your summer holiday right now? Is that money better off in my own pocket for the next few months?

OP posts:
TellMeMoreHellebore · 06/03/2022 22:07

just carry on carrying on!

gogohm · 06/03/2022 22:08

I'm carrying on regardless

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 06/03/2022 22:12

@GregBrawlsInDogJail

Hmm IT'S SPAIN. Get a fucking grip.
She’s talking about money, not about Spain getting invaded. Did you mean to be so rude?

It depends how confident you are about meeting the fuel bills and other cost of living increases. I assume you're completely confident about your employment?

Thanks @AnyFucker I just spat my tea out reading your comment! MN at it's finest.

Libertybear80 · 06/03/2022 22:25

I don't really understand what the news has to do with you needing to save money. Are you planning to donate your holiday money to Ukraine? Confused!

I assume the OP is worried about fuel prices rising.
CarrieHughes · 06/03/2022 22:29

OP doesn't make it very clear it's about money...
It really depends on how much spare money you have!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/03/2022 22:32

The whe world could be on fire and mumsnetters will still be asking about holidays.

Talliah · 06/03/2022 22:41

I would say it’s quite a natural reaction.

The world feels uncertain and whenever that happens people tend to save rather than spend.

I wouldn’t be surprised if holidays get interrupted again this year. Anything could happen. If Putin invades other countries (likely) and we start seeing more mass migration of people across Europe then travelling anywhere will become difficult.

elQuintoConyo · 06/03/2022 22:54

My friend has just booked flights to Montenegro for a short break next weekend. They were cheap. Her husband has always wanted to go.

However, I might cancel my hair appointment for next Tuesday.

Lurkerlot · 06/03/2022 22:54

Check your booking T&Cs, for cancellation fees, as failure to pay final balance by due time can be deemed as you having cancelled the holiday, so you may face full cost penalties.

VikingsandDragons · 07/03/2022 09:23

If money is very tight, then I would consider it as a lot of costs are already rising significantly and my personal feeling is they're going to rise further.

If you have a spare £3-500 a month then I wouldn't be cancelling as we've missed out on 2 years already and I'm very aware my family are now in the final few years of enjoying holidays with the DC before they decide they'd rather stay home with their mates.

If you have travel insurance in place wouldn't this cover a change of circumstances out of your control ie if Russia started taking pot shots at commercial airliners so flights were grounded, or the very unlikely scenario of Spain being invaded as some have suggested?

ShirleyPhallus · 07/03/2022 09:27

I just spat my tea out reading your comment! MN at it's finest.

100% you did not do this.

Yes still go on holiday if you can afford it

deadlanguage · 07/03/2022 09:37

@VikingsandDragons actually insurance usually excludes anything that happens as a consequence of war. Pic attached (apologies very small!) of my policy which is from Aviva - it excludes both war and nuclear radiation.

adriftabroad · 07/03/2022 09:41

Why the outrage at such a sensible question in 'Chat'?

Why the disdain and 'tea spitting' at a banal comment?

OP, I live in Spain and had booked a holiday in Spain this summer which I have just cancelled.

Things just seem so uncertain now, I would prefer to save money too... prices are going up all the time and Covid situation here is also constantly changing.

I fully understand your question.

You spat your tea out over someone saying “For crying out loud" and that comment is MN at it's finest? You are easily pleased Confused

OP it depends on your financial situation. If you can afford it then go enjoy yourself with your family. If you are really worried that rising prices might cause you to really struggle to pay bills then maybe think about it.
Would you lose the money you have already paid though?

VikingsandDragons · 07/03/2022 10:25

I was unaware of this, you've prompted me to dig out my policy so thank you for that. Mine does cover cancellations for the outbreak of war (ABTA Travel Sure), so long as the booking was made before the war was declared, and insurance purchased before the start of the war. My husband & kids are on a different policy though (mine needed to cover different areas and medical conditions) and theirs is much more woolly - I wouldn't put any money on theirs paying out but mine should.

Comedycook · 07/03/2022 10:27

@FrownedUpon

Well I really want to stay close to family including elderly parents with all this going on, so we’ve cancelled our summer holiday.
Seems a ridiculous over reaction
sleaf · 07/03/2022 10:29

Cape Verde next month is paid in full but I'm nervous given the Ukraine situation....

adriftabroad · 07/03/2022 10:30

Not at all an over reaction, it's how she feels and it's perfectly valid in the current climate.

Comedycook · 07/03/2022 10:31

Why on earth would you need to remain close to family in the UK because there's a war in the Ukraine?
Comedycook · 07/03/2022 10:32

@sleaf

Cape Verde next month is paid in full but I'm nervous given the Ukraine situation....
Why? It's in a totally different part of the world last time I looked at a map
adriftabroad · 07/03/2022 10:36

Because it's what she wants to do. Feels comfortable with.
The situation in the Ukraine is potentially extremely serious plus COVID she'd rather be home near familly.

Surely that's obvious? Not how you feel, how many others feel, but it is not an over reaction IMO or hard to understand.

StringFellow · 07/03/2022 10:36

Is it money you’re worried about?
