Would you pay off your holiday deposit just now….or is what’s happening in Ukraine making you think twice?

Exactly that. I’ve just received a reminder that the outstanding balance for our family holiday to Spain is due at the end of this month. This was originally booked in Jan 2020, and has been postponed for obvious reasons.

I’m gripped to the news. Watching what’s unfolding is sickening. And I have a worry about what could possibly be coming. However, also trying to hold on to some normality, especially for the kids. It’s been a scary and worrying 24 months.

Is it crazy to be spending £££ on your summer holiday right now? Is that money better off in my own pocket for the next few months?

What do you think will happen that stops you going to Spain?

ZenNudist · 06/03/2022 20:53

I'm dropping my August plans. Too much uncertainty. I'm booked to go to America on May and Norfolk in August. Going to book a few days in the lakes at the end of summer too but keep it low key. The situation is going to go on for a long time but at least we can get past the worst of the crisis, or things may be too bad to go on holiday by August. Depending on how crazy putin is.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 06/03/2022 20:55

I've just paid ours off about 10 minutes ago, so it's a yes from me.

BloomingTrees · 06/03/2022 20:55

I don't think Putin will be invading the Uk or Spain before this summer.

Enjoy your hols.

CharlotteRose90 · 06/03/2022 20:56

Well I’m heading to Spain in may and Croatia in September. I’m going . Nothing will stop me going.

Why would you cancel going to Norfolk?
Spaghag · 06/03/2022 20:58

You can look at it in a few ways.

Personally I'd be thinking that the past couple of years have brought home how short life can be so enjoy it while you can. First Covid, now the war in Ukraine. Have your holiday.

Schlerp · 06/03/2022 21:00

Probably safer abroad. I’d go.

Copenhagenoffice · 06/03/2022 21:00

Why would you cancel going to Norfolk?

Agree, it would be the least of your worries if that mad bastard has invaded the UK in July to be worrying about going to Norfolk the following month Hmm

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 06/03/2022 21:02

I assume you mean you might be better off having some more spare cash, not that Russia is going to invade Spain.

So that depends on your financial situation. Fuel and other inflation could be problematic if you would have to stretch to pay for the holiday.

freshcarnation · 06/03/2022 21:06

We're cracking on with our holiday. Put my plans for a once in a lifetime trip to Russia on the back burner though

ZenNudist · 06/03/2022 21:07

I'm not cancelling Norfolk or America. I'm giving up on my August plan to go to Europe for the same reason as OP is doubting her plan: to save money. Was thinking North Portugal last week in August. Its a lot of money to spend on America and we have the Norfolk trip so going away the same month to Portugal I'm not sure. I might swap out for a few days in the lakes. I don't fancy spending even more money on holidays right now. I'm not sure I need 3 holidays... I want to go away in October too.

LilyPond2 · 06/03/2022 21:26

I would pay the balance (though not any earlier than I had to). My thinking would be that if Britain ends up at war with Russia, having wasted money on a holiday would the least of my worries.

FrownedUpon · 06/03/2022 21:29

Well I really want to stay close to family including elderly parents with all this going on, so we’ve cancelled our summer holiday.

nearlyspringyay · 06/03/2022 21:36

I'm saving each month but not giving it to tui until it's due. I'd do that anyway.

SausagePourHomme · 06/03/2022 21:39

i can just imagine the mumsnetters as bombs fall around their ears saying 'you know what steve, I am so glad I never paid the balance on those 2 weeks in alicante'.

live your life

Passtherioja · 06/03/2022 21:43

I've been thinking about the same thing. We've got a week in Greece in August and I'm considering not going but the kids would be so disappointed-I guess if everything kicks off then losing money will be the least of our worries.

LubaLuca · 06/03/2022 21:46

The only thing that will stop me going to Spain in July is Putin pressing the big red button, which would mean the money lost on a holiday would be very low down on my list of worries.

AnyFucker · 06/03/2022 21:52

For crying out loud

PAFMO · 06/03/2022 21:54

I booked Madrid, Paris and Berlin about 2 hours ago. I did cancel Iceland, but only because I've decided to do that as a tour rather than on my own.

countdowntonap · 06/03/2022 21:57

To respond to your question Is it crazy to be spending £££ on your summer holiday right now? , Op, I have to agree I’ve had similar thoughts. We’ve got a blow out 17 night holiday planned, staying in suites with our own private pools (dual stay at two hotels). Whilst I’m not thinking of cancelling altogether, I’m considering changing my accommodation to a) have more spending money if the £ to € is weak b) have more money to keep our house nice and warm next winter when it looks like gas prices could rise even more.

Those asking if the Op is worried about Spain being invaded haven’t read the post properly.

Barleysugar85 · 06/03/2022 21:58

We just booked for Turkey in May. Honestly if things did deteriorate I just don't think its an obvious target, nor would Spain be. I had to cancel my Romania trip due to Covid two years ago and we did decide maybe now isn't the time to rebook for there, as its next door and receiving a lot of refugees at the moment, but otherwise what would be your worry really?

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 06/03/2022 22:00

Hmm IT'S SPAIN. Get a fucking grip.

Barleysugar85 · 06/03/2022 22:01

Sorry just saw the previous poster pointing out it was money concerns- my fault for being swept up in the other posts!

I feel like after Covid lockdowns we've not had a break in so long, and if bills go up we are unlikely to have one next year, that I'd like to have something this year. We are only going for a week though and picked a relatively cheap destination.

TheRealityCheque · 06/03/2022 22:05

For crying out loud
