Birthday present for a five year old boy?

Could anyone tell me what kind of toys are popular with five year old boys? I need to buy for a birthday party and am unsure of the child's interests or what is popular. I've tried using the age filters on toy shop websites but that doesn't quite narrow it down enough.

Lego!

I would go with Lego. Loads to choose from and they’re age specific so you could specify your search. Check out smyths and Argos x

Simple board games, collaborative ones,
Or dobble, guess who, though they may have those. My 5 Yr old boy isn't in to lego so much. And he thinks he loves characters but never does much with them. But play a game with him.... Hours of play.
Splat monsters is a firm favourite.

Ask the parents. 5 year olds are pretty variable…mine was Lego mad and into simple chapter books but hated football, some of his friends were the complete opposite.

Ask the parent, but playdoh and Lego are pretty universal. Most 5yr old boys seem to like Spider-Man/ Batman too.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone. I'd ask the parent but we're not on great terms. She recently bought my daughter a gift and didn't ask for ideas so I feel like I ought to just crack on and choose something myself.

I got a friend of DD's a giant pirate colour-in poster and it was a big hit.
