Companies with Russian links to boycott

Tulipomania · 05/03/2022 13:13

I haven't seen another thread on this.

Can we compile a list of companies to boycott who are refusing to withdraw business from Russia?

I'll take a start with Coca-Cola, and Costa Coffee, which is owned by Coke.

OP posts:

Pets at Home. They stock Russian hamsters.

Robotdott · 05/03/2022 18:51

or me choosing not to buy a Costa coffee in the hope that Coca Cola will pull out of doing business there

Pets at Home. They stock Russian hamsters.
Probably in cahoots with Assad-sympathising Syrian hamsters.
AlternativePerspective · 05/03/2022 19:11

*Pets at Home. They stock Russian hamsters.8 yeah, stamp on the little fuckers. That’ll learn putin eh.

I was responding sarcastically to a place st which has now been deleted.

I shall ask MN to delete it, and yours HowToStop because it quotes mine

Amnotamug · 05/03/2022 19:23

@Tulipomania

If Russian people suffer as a result of Putin's actions then that absolutely can make a difference to his warmongering strategy. It hurts the economy and also influences Russian public opinion to the war. That is one of the points of sanctions, whether it is government's stopping buying oil from Russia or me choosing not to buy a Costa coffee in the hope that Coca Cola will pull out of doing business there.
I don't think you understand what a dictatorship is, OP.

Public opinion won't affect Putin. He's not going to get voted out at the next lovely democratic election. He doesn't care what the Russian people think, or how much he hurts them.

EffOrfagain · 05/03/2022 19:42

There will be another thread next week moaning that the shelves are empty

Amnotamug · 05/03/2022 19:47

I do think that the more sanctions that are imposed will
A..less money to fund this cunts behaviour
B ..even the Oligarths will get pissed off that they cannot travel and spend / show off their wealth
C…someone will shoot a bullet through his head !!

Keladrythesaviour · 05/03/2022 20:00

@Im2022 I was 12 when we waged war in Iraq. Does that mean I can't do anything for this war because I didn't do anything for a previous one?

Clarabe1 · 05/03/2022 20:04

As someone who works in supply chain I can tell you it's not that easy. A product can be made in the UK but source it's raw material from Russia. If a product contains oil (such as plastic) it could well be Russian oil. It's still good to try and buy ethically where possible but bear in mind supply chains are huge

Im2022 · 05/03/2022 20:11

Don’t be so deliberately obtuse @Keladrythesaviour

There have been plenty of world atrocities in your adulthood that you should know about and could do something about too. Do you know what’s happening in Yemen? Palestine? Afghanistan? Or do you only see war in Europe?
Do you know about the Bosnian genocide when you were little? This isn’t the first war in Europe where people have died and have had to flee their homes in recent history.

A little bit of education and learning won’t do you any harm instead of making catty comments on a public forum.

Ok, calm down Grin
mathanxiety · 05/03/2022 20:20

Agree, @AlternativePerspective.

How many people are boycotting petrol produced from Saudi oil in order to bring attention to the Saudi Arabian war on Yemen using military systems, arms and ammo sold to the Saudis by the UK?

MacaroniBaloney · 05/03/2022 20:25

This thread is worth a read as the poster explains the point of economic sanctions and boycotts.

lemongreentea · 05/03/2022 20:28

@AlternativePerspective

Who did you boycott when the US and UK were invading Iraq?
exactly
mathanxiety · 05/03/2022 20:30

And what about the Uighurs in China?

Are you all going to boycott companies doing business with China, holding stock in businesses doing business in China, avoid buying Chinese products?

All the consumer electronics products, laptops, apple devices, Nike sneakers, clothes, medical equipment, car parts, food items - the millions and millions of items we all take for granted. Are you going to stop buying them and using them, and buy alternatives?
Are there alternatives?

You would end up growing and eating your own food, wearing clothes you knit yourself using wool from your own sheep if you were to think all of this through and act in accordance with your logical conclusions.

mathanxiety · 05/03/2022 20:36

@EffOrfagain, oh yes indeed, so true.

mathanxiety · 05/03/2022 20:42

@Tulipomania, Russian people endured a good deal more than not being able to buy washing up liquid in the course of their history, and especially during WW2.

An example of endurance is the siege of Leningrad, which lasted for over 900 days. There are mass graves where the bodies of the 800,000 civilians who died of war and starvation are buried, marked with the years. People go to these vast memorials to pay their respects even still.

I think it will be a point of pride for them to get through this, and it will reinforce for them the narrative that the west is out to destroy them.

Fiefofum · 05/03/2022 20:56

Thanks OP, this was a useful thread until the whataboutery tossers piled in. Just bugger off if this isn’t your thing and some of us just want to do all we can and our only real power is as consumers!

I will be boycotting what I can (I don’t tend to buy soft drinks, costa or unilever stuff anyway), trying to use less gas by turning down the thermostat and thankfully we don’t use petrol as we have an electric car anyhow (charged solely on a 100% renewables tariff for the smart arses out there).

Im2022 · 05/03/2022 21:04

@Fiefofum I am actually pfftt laughing at your post. I can’t tell if you’re being serious or taking the piss.

You’re going to use less gas because of Russia huh? Why turn the thermostat down though? That’s still using it. Just cut off the gas pipe to your house and live without gas to show those Russians 😂.

EcoCustard · 05/03/2022 21:09

I have always boycotted Costa as I am always picking up the coffee cups when I litter pick my local country lanes & ditches. I hope people boycotted all companies associated with Yemen, Palestine & Syria too or realise it does little but hurt the ordinary folks and boycotting all Russian products and associations is a slippery slope to head down.

Wintersonata · 05/03/2022 21:14

Are you all going to boycott companies doing business with China, holding stock in businesses doing business in China, avoid buying Chinese products

That’s an interesting point. If China did something unacceptable such as join forces with Russia or invade Taiwan I’m not sure how the rest of the world could show anger as so many countries are so dependent on China for so much.
