How many loads of washing for a house of 2?

catfunk · 03/03/2022 18:17

We usually have 4 ...

1x darks
1x lights inc 2 bath towels
1x bedding
1x socks pants boxers which get tumble dried
In winter a wool wash every other week.

Is this excessive for 2 adults in one house? All done on eco setting but lights are 60 degrees eco.
I keep seeing posters saying they only do one load a week - how ? My bedding and towels would be an extra load!

When it was just DH and I 4/5 a week two or three loads of clothes more in winter less in summer, one towels etc, one bedding (superking so can't wash with anything else it won't fit), one miscellaneous sports kit and gym/swimming stuff, and blankets throws cushion covers, cat bed etc all done on rotation not weekly

garlictwist · 04/03/2022 05:58

Two adults here.

I don't bother separating darks and lights, just bung everything in together and no one's died yet.

So we do two loads of clothes washing a week and one of bedding.

garlictwist · 04/03/2022 05:59

And the clothes washing is all the clothes- underwear, t shirts, sports clothes and towels in together.

chatw0o0 · 04/03/2022 06:01

Two adults and 3-4 loads a week:

2 for mixed clothing
1 for towels, and
1 for bedding but not always done weekly (apart from pillow cases).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/03/2022 06:05

1 adult 1 child. I do 4 or 5 loads a week

Darks
Colours
Towels
Bedding
Whites - usually every other week as we don't have many whites other than DS's school shirts.

singlepringlenotbychoice · 04/03/2022 06:06

Theres only me
1x towels
2x bedding (superking bedding & light/dark loads)
2-3 x clothes (uniform, normal clothes, gym clothes.)

I could get away with less clothes loads but I have sweating running clothes to wash up to 3 times a week so I need to more.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/03/2022 06:08

But, how many towels do two people get through, in a week, in order to do a towel-wash per week? Or a separate bedding wash?

Genuinely interested

Not everyone has space for big washing machines @Fordian.

I use two towels a week (body and hair), DH uses one and the dog has one plus a drying coat. Add a bath mat, hand towels and tea towels and that often takes up three loads in our washer-dryer else they won't wash or dry properly.

CirreltheSquirrel · 04/03/2022 06:17

3-4 (roughly every other day). We both do a fair amount of cycling which makes it add up - as most days we end up with 2 sets of clothes work (and when riding outside at this time of year that's lots of layers!)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/03/2022 06:19

Regarding towels - we use one for me, one for DS, one hand towel, and we have fabric bath mats so they go in as well, plus the kitchen tea towel. So that's 5 bulky items in the machine.

Marmelace · 04/03/2022 06:26

About the same amount as the times this thread is regurgitated

EffOrfagain · 04/03/2022 06:27

Some cheaper machines are only 6 kg, while others, usually more expensive are 10kg so some can do in 3 washes what others take 5 to do so a bit pointless really to measure by wash no.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2022 06:30

i havent counted
i have a full laundry basket
i prefer to put the washing on the line so did a load yesterday but wont do any today as rain is forecast

ukborn · 04/03/2022 06:37

We are two, one a teenager who believes in 'wear once then wash'.
I'd say on average it's about three a week - sometimes two, sometimes 4. I wear my clothes more than once (other than knickers) and my daughter, unless leaving the house, would wear her jammies all weekend! I don't do bed linen every week.
So one light, two dark, one 'other' which may be bed linen and towels or whatever (though towels can go in with the light stuff). Definitely more dark than light.
When I had four kids in the house it still wasn't more than five or six a week, mainly as they all wore uniforms that were washed once a week (not blazers, which were done every few) so it was just the shirts and PE kit (socks and undies). Once about 15 the kids did their own laundry, though I confess now I'm down to one I do hers.

OldSpeclkledHen · 04/03/2022 06:44

Jeez I live alone and do 4 loads a week... now that seems excessive 😂

CrunchyCarrot · 04/03/2022 06:45

3-4 on average, I'd say, for the two of us.

1 x dark weekly.
1 x whites fortnightly
1 x bedding weekly
1 x towels weekly

GalactatingGoddess · 04/03/2022 06:47

7 minimum for us! 2 adults and a toddler
Usually more like 9 though

One every day and an extra on a couple of days due to:

Nursery clothes changes
Sheets changes weekend
Gym nearly every working day for one of us

Wfhquery · 04/03/2022 06:55

I can’t understand how people do so few washes. I must do at least 7 a week for 3 of us if not more. Dh is in a manual job so gets through quite a few clothes and winter when it’s colder he’ll wear several layers of the shirt, jumper etc and the jumpers are heavier so take up more room. I work in office, wear trousers several days but change top each day. Ds has new uniform on most days as it’s dirty. We don’t have a drier so find it hard to keep on top of sometimes when not good weather

MadameMinimes · 04/03/2022 06:56

I’d say, it averages out to about 2 per week. Bedding and towels is usually a load per fortnight, white stuff is about once per fortnight and dark stuff probably a load per week. We don’t really have a schedule though. Some weeks I might wash nothing and then have a laundry blitz the next because the baskets are overflowing and I’ve run out of stuff to wear. Grin

anon2022anon · 04/03/2022 06:59

I got most of the washing up to date at the beginning of the week, I've just sorted and counted and theres currently 7 loads waiting again.
2x dark
1x white and light
1x colour
1x work
1x towel
1x bedding

There's still another bed to strip too, and we have washable rugs that are wet currently. There will definitely be at least 1 more towel wash too, plus at this time of the year, toddlers coat will come home filthy often.

10-12 a week for 4 of us I reckon.

Billandben444 · 04/03/2022 07:07

2 of us, both retired.
3 x mixed a fortnight including towels
1x bedding a fortnight including towels
The only whites are my pristine cotton nighties and m&s knickers (and the odd t-shirt) - I soak them all in the kitchen sink in Vanish oxy gold and wash liquid overnight and then use the rinse/spin cotton programme. I never use conditioner (yuk) but add a splash of white vinegar instead.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 04/03/2022 07:18

When it was just me and DS(6) i did 2 a week

Now it its me, DP and DS it's more like 5 a week as I now have grubby workwear and overalls that need to be washed too

USaYwHatNow · 04/03/2022 07:33

Just me and husband, 1 a week. Maybe 2

Marmelace · 04/03/2022 09:32

I wonder how many loads of washing you can get out of a chicken?

Quamora · 04/03/2022 10:04

@EffOrfagain

Some cheaper machines are only 6 kg, while others, usually more expensive are 10kg so some can do in 3 washes what others take 5 to do so a bit pointless really to measure by wash no.
Mine is 8kg and I do full loads so 80-88kg a week for six people
Hyperion100 · 04/03/2022 10:08

2 per week
