Semantle Chapter 2

Since the madness of our love/hate affair with Semantle is continuing, I thought I start a second thread. Why worry about the goings on in the world when you can pull your hair out over vocabulary?

To umderstand what I'm on about follow this link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

If you want to see how we've been getting on up to now, thread one is here.

Enjoy, and don't shoot the messenger when you get nothing else done all day!!!

Weird one today! Like others I was miles off then randomly came across it.

I solved Semantle #37 in 26 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 12.42. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #16. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 15.50.

OutdoorType · 07/03/2022 08:34

@OutdoorType

I'm on 140 guesses and still only in the 700s ☹️ I'm sensing a definite theme but cannot think of any more words. Please can someone dm me a clue maybe in 800s or early 900s?
No need for dm. Finally got it in 200. Uggh, I'd definitely gone off down a slightly wrong track!
BettyBootsie · 07/03/2022 08:43

Yay! I went straight in with 833 on my first guess but still took a while Smile

I solved Semantle #37 in 106 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 27.84 (833/1000).My penultimate guess had a similarity of 39.74 (990/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

This was my experience this morning, definitely think American rather than British words for the relationships.

I’m stuck on 977 and going nowhere apart from backwards (and cold).

Cannot.believe.this.

I solved Semantle #37 in 8 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 13.06. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #3. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 10.73. semantle.novalis.org/

@Idroppedthescrewinthetuna

Ok. I am on 996 now and stuck! I hate being so close but not getting anywhere.
I've got to 996 on try 15... so hoping it's not unfamiliar jargon
Greenhillfaraway · 07/03/2022 08:58

I have absolutely no idea how I achieved this - pure luck!

I solved Semantle #37 in 4 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 15.71. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #4. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 14.06. semantle.novalis.org/

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2022 09:00

Ok, quite an easy one to get from 996.

I solved Semantle #37 in 19 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.97. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #9. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 31.60 (933/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

lljkk · 07/03/2022 09:01

I will forget by tomorrow about this, but for me, the nearest words don't make good sense. At least, there's a whole group of words that should be very close in meaning and aren't up there. Oh well...

GiveMummyTheWhizzer · 07/03/2022 09:02

I solved Semantle #37 in 45 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.60. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #8. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 4.68. semantle.novalis.org/

SmolCat · 07/03/2022 09:07

Yes @RonniePickering Thanks for the tip.

ps: it says in the FAQ that all the answer words are from most common 5000 English words. The meanings may be very American, but they won't be obscure jargon. That's why such simple words like bold, mix, bat, value have been the answers (and will continue to be for next 10+ years). Being most common words they often have different meanings in different contexts, which adds to the ... richness of our experiences in guessing.

The closest words can be unusual or jargon, not most common 5000, hence why pancreases was close to liver.

There are notes in FAQ for how you could get hints, by going to the original database & extracting the most common 5000 or even looking in that db for words considered close to your best guess so far (I haven't tried this but you know, it's a game, it's no fun when it's too frustrating, so I'd understand someone who did try it).

I solved Semantle #37 in 87 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 13.14. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #5. My penultimate guess had a similarity of -8.06. semantle.novalis.org/

Without wanting to jinx it, I think I'm getting the hang of this!

5thnonblonde · 07/03/2022 09:20

I solved Semantle #37 in 24 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.88. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #13. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 19.64. semantle.novalis.org/

That is interesting! I never considered a mainstream target word having obscure associated words.
ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2022 09:24

Yes, that's definitely worth bearing in mind lljkk. And also that the source of the related words is from machine learning using Google news, not lexigraphical relationships

RoxieLoxy · 07/03/2022 09:30

Got it in 125 today (this is a good score for me Grin). The words just before it made much more sense to me so I quite liked it. Pm if anyone wants a clue.

Really, it has stumped me! I have used every word surrounding 496. What am I not getttiiinnnngggg 😳

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/03/2022 09:40

What I find odd is that they don't seem to acknowledge all the meanings in the similar words. It's like the game not only assigns the word but the specific meaning of that word.

For example, if the word was "platform" (not today's word), the game may give Greens for anything train station related but no greens at all for anything to do with any other meaning of the word Platform.

lljkk · 07/03/2022 09:42

ah... machine learning.
I'm thinking about some categories of ppl whose communications likely don't inform Google News, so that could explain the large number of words I think should be close to today's answer but are not.

I am trying hard to think of good hint for Idroppedthescrewinthetuna. Something about who uses #496, and reasons to use it.

BestIsWest · 07/03/2022 09:43

I solved Semantle #37 in 68 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.18. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 28.73 (868/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #37 in 47 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.06. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #23. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 32.13 (943/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Again looking at the words in the 900s I have no clue what half of them mean Confused
I think this game is just luck tbh.

Sexnotgender · 07/03/2022 09:47

Got lucky with my initial guess and danced around with some cold guesses then hit the right one.

I solved Semantle #37 in 25 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 17.82. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #2. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 39.74 (990/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 07/03/2022 10:00

I had a good first guess and got todays in 10, starting to like this.
