Theatre Show vs family party dilemma

First world problems I know.

I recently had an invitation to a family party - it’s a surprise and the person having the birthday is my cousin. It’s his 40th, we get in well but we are not close Iyswim. It’s in 4 weeks.

Anyway I’d accepted and RSVPd the invitation. I have just realised today that I have a theatre trip in the same night which is with two friends, this trip is a delayed one - actually delayed twice by Covid, it’s all paid. It’s a West End theatre show on tour, so a good one and tickets were quite expensive.

I’m not sure what to do. My DH says that the family party takes precedence , I get that . But the theatre trip is also important to me .

I think my friends will be pissed off if I miss it. I don't think my cousin will really notice if I’m not there!

Wwyd ?

I’d do the theatre.

Theatre already booked and costs money.

Theatre, I doubt your cousin will be overly bothered plus it’s a surprise so they won’t even know you RSVP’d then backed out.

I would say that the theatre trip takes precedence as you had it in the diary first (you just forgot).

Theatre, of course.

Theatre. Apologise profusely to family for messing up the dates and RSVP'ing.

Fernandina · 02/03/2022 22:22

Theatre if not that arsed about missing the party.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 02/03/2022 22:42

Definitely theatre. It was already booked and paid for, and you've already made plans with your friends.

Gottonsomedraws · 05/03/2022 17:10

Thanks all I have just sent a message of apology to the party . It was fairly unanimous!

Theatre. Send text on lines of 'just heard tickets booked ages ago and cancelled are now valid again just for that night. Sure you understand, have great time' and then arrange to go out for dinner with them another night.
