How much has your energy bill increased!?

Magik01 · 02/03/2022 14:09

Had an email off British Gas yesterday saying that my gas bill will be increasing by £534 a year and my electricity by £370, so a total of £904 per year. That’s all estimates of course based on our usage now, but how are people going to afford this?!

Currently on maternity leave so in the house a lot with a baby and a toddler, so obviously electricity is being used a lot. We also only have the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night. Confused

How much has yours increased? I find it actually very worrying how your expects to find another £900 out of thin air essentially.

My very elderly mother lives on her own in a one bedroom cottage and she has been told her gas bill will go up by £500 per year. I don’t know how people on pensions/ benefits are supposed to afford this.
Magik01 you have my sympathy. I remember being at home with little ones and keeping the curtains closed to keep in the warmth. We had electric heaters on the skirting boards and I only heated the lounge during the day. I had a friend who used to wear full length thermals under her clothes in her house.

Sexnotgender · 02/03/2022 14:15

Over £120 a month increase so around £1500 a year give or take.

However I did my meter readings the other day and I’m over £600 in debt so will probably be more than that.

pupcakes · 02/03/2022 14:16

A grand. Absolutely fucking madness for a 2 bed house to be paying nearly £300 per month.

And I'm going to find it tight, but I feel sick thinking of all the people who literally just can't afford it. I volunteer in a food bank and people are really really worried.

I’m just about to return to work after maternity leave thank fuck.

Money would have been REALLY tight if I was still on mat leave when this really bites.

WhatchaGotThere · 02/03/2022 14:22

I’m on a low income and I’m disabled. Energy bills have gone up over £1000 per year.

I’m flitting between worry about being totally fucked by next Winter and utter rage that MPs have been given a £2,200 pay rise in the midst of all this. The prices are a disgrace. Utter utter disgrace.

Magik01 · 02/03/2022 14:22

It really worries me about all the elderly as well, or people who for whatever reason can’t work. It will be a case of eating or heating and it’s heartbreaking.

@Sexnotgender I too have a huge “winter debit” on my account now too. Reducing usage seems futile when the standing charge is so high .

WhatchaGotThere · 02/03/2022 14:25

@Magik01 I am unable to work so I rely on benefits. It is very worrying indeed.

qualitygirl · 02/03/2022 14:25

Nothing yet as I'm on a set plan...but it's literally my only utility bill besides phone and internet so I don't mind.

Magik01 · 02/03/2022 14:27

I totally understand why prices have gone up, but it makes no sense why the daily standing charge has increased so much surely?!

Oh and while we are at it, I don't want the loan of £200 from the government! I know it’s £200 but it’s just going to increase my bills in the coming years. So bloody pointless.

150% here. We can afford it. I don't know how so many will manage though, that's a terribly steep increase all of a sudden.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2022 14:32

I was paying £160 this time last year and I fixed in January at £280.

ElementalIllusions · 02/03/2022 14:33

I don't know how I will afford it, I live in my overdraft as it is, I barely get by, I don't have extra income to cover the increase.

We don't use the heating at all, I don't use the cooker, everything is cooked in the air fryer or microwave as its quicker so uses less power.
I do strip washes and wash my hair using cold water so we use less gas.

I've been living like this for a while, all this increase is going to do is put me further into debt, but I am already on payment meters, so it means I'll just have to make sacrifices, although I don't know where.

Sirzy · 02/03/2022 14:34

Was paying £75 a month and was in credit. Fixed deal ended in January. Just put DD up to £100 for now but know it will need to go up more soon

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/03/2022 14:37

We are on prepayment meter which I know is more expensive to begin with but it was here when we moved in and I actually like paying for what I use as I go instead on a big bill every 4 months or at the end of the month. Standing charge for electric has gone up to 57p per day and gas 37p per day. Last years estimate was £889 for electric now £1122 and gas £780 now £1,200 it’s madness

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/03/2022 14:40

Ours Is going up from £210 to £300 a month. That’s based on actual usage not the headline predictions, if we stay in line with what we used last year.

Five bed / three storey house, so larger than average (but still a city terrace, no drive etc)

We’ve turned the thermostat down over this winter so just bring it up to 18 for a couple of hours in the morning and again early evening. Turning lights off more religiously and just ordered one of those plugs to see if any appliances are leaking electric.

We actually use substantially less gas than their predictions for a house this size but slightly more electric, I intend to find out why.

It’s shit and very stressful.

valerianaofficiana · 02/03/2022 14:43

Our electricity bill is close to GDP of Andorra. 🤬

FacebookPhotos · 02/03/2022 14:51

Mine will increase by 50% in April. I already use very little so was on a tariff with high(ish) unit cost and low(ish) standing charge. But my supplier is upping both to meet the new price cap. I can just about afford it at the moment.

The standing charge thing pisses me off the most tbh. I think it is so the companies can try to claw back money they're losing on the unit cost, but that is unfair on low volume users (who are likely to be poorer already) and anyone who tries to reduce bills by cutting down usage will be hampered.

Do you have long showers or multiple showers per day? I found cutting my shower time made a noticeable difference to my electric usage.

disneylover367 · 02/03/2022 14:56

I don’t have a direct debit I pay as I go along. Octopus phoned me yesterday and tried to get me to set up a direct debit for £63.00 pcm. Im on a variable tariff and Im checking to see if it suddenly goes up, though there is nothing I can do about it.

KonTikki · 02/03/2022 15:09

Coming off my fixed tariff at the end of the month, and moving onto the Standard Variable, the cheapest option at present.
This means over 100% increase for gas and electricity.

Good suggestion. One a day for the two adults, maybe two a a week for teen/ tween so not excessive. I only wash my hair once a week. I want to check the TV s (we have an old one set up for the Xbox) and fridge freezer, both of which are quite old. Are appliances on standby very costly?
Scottishflower65 · 02/03/2022 15:27

Mine has gone from 4K to over 7K. Old house, my elderly parents live here too. I’m in shock!

disneylover367 · 02/03/2022 15:31

@Scottishflower65 crikey that seems crazy! Even the 4k let alone 7, is it a very large house? What is your dd going to be? Who are you with?
