How much has your energy bill increased!?

Magik01 · 02/03/2022 14:09

Had an email off British Gas yesterday saying that my gas bill will be increasing by £534 a year and my electricity by £370, so a total of £904 per year. That’s all estimates of course based on our usage now, but how are people going to afford this?!

Currently on maternity leave so in the house a lot with a baby and a toddler, so obviously electricity is being used a lot. We also only have the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night. Confused

How much has yours increased? I find it actually very worrying how your expects to find another £900 out of thin air essentially.

We just paid over £700 to OVO for the last quarter.. that's double what it was last winter and rising. We have switched (just) to Octopus who estimate £91 pcm for electric. Our gas doesn't seem to have changed, yet (British Gas)..

Scottishflower65 · 02/03/2022 15:50

It’s just short of £600 a month. It’s nearly two hundred years old in a conservation area so that limits some measures such as no PVC double glazing etc. Splits into two areas. One bedroom each for me & husband, and one for son, one each for parents who each need a bedroom. Two living rooms, two small kitchens. High ceilings and big windows. I already wear thermals and have unheated rooms in my bit of house. Although I need to be careful as damp can occur if I cut it completely. Parents need more heat as they are much less mobile. Homes to multi generational live with privacy are very hard to come by and new more energy efficient ones are almost never seen.
British Gas - got transferred there when my old supplier went bust.
Can just about afford it with cut backs in other areas and realise that makes me very lucky.

@Scottishflower65 ahh ok that explains it

Our fixed price deal ends this month, and the new tariff is an extra £1,200 a year. I thought that was bad until I realised that doesn't even factor in the April price cap increase.

So, come April we will be going up from just over £2k per year to £6k. I could cry.

We are fortunate in that we can reduce our consumption. And I have just got a second job, so hopefully we won't be forced to make the heat or eat decision that others will. But I know that for many people, the choice is real.

andi62 · 02/03/2022 16:04

Standing charges, my leccy will be 41.66p per unit, a 73% hike. £251 PA for gas and electric, sick. A poll tax, that hammers poor and less well off people and families, effectively subsidising the rich and profligate.

AKAanothername · 02/03/2022 16:06

Our fixed rate finishes later this month, our current annual dual fuel spend is approx £2,200. The annual estimate from 1st April is £4,500, they've also offered a fixed rate but that would be £6,600!

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2022 16:08

Mines got up from £120 to £200 a month and before the increase I "fixed" the rates in until 2024 😩

Traumdeuter · 02/03/2022 16:09

Just had the gas estimate in and it’s going to go up by about £400. Boiler’s about ten years old, rads are a bit older and don’t have individual controls. Luckily it’s quite a small house so doesn’t need much warming, but I will be layering up a lot more from now on and sticking to strict timings for the heating being on.

Are appliances on standby very costly?

Modern TVs on standby generally aren't. Typically they only use about 1W when on stand-by (around 15p per month on the current price cap). It should be pretty easy to check with the plug in meter you've ordered. You won't be able to check your shower with that though, and that is something which is easily overlooked.

As a rule of thumb, things which get hot are expensive to run.

A standard shower (8kW) will cost around 29p per 10 minutes.
A normal TV (50W) costs around 1p per hour of use.
An LED bulb (10W) costs around 0.2p per hour.

FacebookPhotos · 02/03/2022 16:45

Sorry, that should have been 28p per 10 minutes of showering. And all costs are based on the current price cap of 21p per kWh.

PetuniaPlum · 02/03/2022 17:03

Ours is estimated to be just over £900 more a year!

I don't know how we will manage realistically..

Our water bill has increased too.....along with everything else apart from the money we have coming in.

Scottishflower65 · 02/03/2022 17:08

Plus we will have the additional NI from next month 😭 and inflation forecast to go up by at least 7% this year.
PP correct, everything going up except salaries.

LadyCatStark · 02/03/2022 17:46

Ours is going up by £900 a year too. I’ve turned the heating off and I’m really cold now! Then there’s the rising cost of food, petrol, council tax, national insurance, I’m sure there’s more… I CBA with life really anymore.

hownowpurplecow · 02/03/2022 18:11

Just switched to a fixed tariff, ours has gone up by £1300 a year now. Luckily we can afford it at the moment, but with the rising costs of absolutely everything else, and a baby on the way, it’s going to be tight. So depressing to work full time just to cover basic living costs, and our hope of buying a house soon gets further and further away!

MenopauseSucks · 02/03/2022 18:37

At the moment I'm on a really good fixed rate deal with EDF that runs out on 31st May 2022.
With my estimated annual usage of Gas & Electric as per my Nov 2021 bill + 5% VAT, I currently pay £1161/year.
When my deal runs out & if I go onto the standard variable rate controlled by the 1st April 2022 price cap, I will be paying £2218/year.
So about a 100% rise...

Madmog · 02/03/2022 18:42

Ours is estimated to increase by £612, a 78% discount. We're fairly careful with our living costs, but we're burying our heads in the sand right now and really need to review our living costs.

Spectre8 · 02/03/2022 18:46

DD increased from £55 to £70, not a huge increase for me considering.

OnTopOfThePiano · 02/03/2022 18:52

@mdh2020 and anyone else with elderly relatives there are warm home discounts & winter fuel payment that may help

Spudina · 02/03/2022 18:58

My gas and electricity bill was £515 just for the month of Feb. Which is a short month. Last year it was £300 a month in the winter months. I didn’t know when I moved in two years ago it would be this expensive! It’s a four bedroomed, old, detached stone house. I’ve just moved companies last week which are fixing my bills at £205 a month. So no more nasty £515 bill surprises. It’s all very depressing.

Libertybear80 · 02/03/2022 19:00

Looking at the rate increase it seems mine will double in April.

Nidan2Sandan · 02/03/2022 19:01

I'm fixed until August & slightly terrified by how much it could increase. I pay £110 a month currently and this past month I used exactly £110 of gas/electric.

I am the grand total of £69 in credit.

I could afford to pay more, but paying hundreds more would be difficult

FTEngineerM · 02/03/2022 19:03

Tbh it’s this energy increase that’s made me realise we’re privileged as fuck.

I feel like everything is costing hundreds now whereas it used to cost tens, that’s the only way I can describe it.

D0lphine · 02/03/2022 19:12

People are going to die from the cold next winter if the government doesn't do anything.

D0lphine · 02/03/2022 19:13

So sad

Tequilamockinbird · 02/03/2022 19:17

My 2 year fix is about to run out. I currently pay £120 a month and it's going up to £260 a month Sad. Then probably up again in October. It's scandalous.
